Redman This thesis endeavours to explore the relationship between School Board elections and other strands of urban politics. The place of School Boards alongside Town Councils and Boards of Guardians, and their respective importance, is discussed. How widened political opportunities, especially for women and the work• ing classes, were opened up by the 1870 Education Act, and the effect of this on the future political scene through women's suf• frage, Trades Unionism and the developing Labour Party is developed. Urban and rural School Boards differed, and this is illustrated as well as how this affected educational development in different areas. Many educational innovations were introduced by School Boards and their influence on Central Government is shown. The fact that some School Boards went too far too fast contributed to their demise in 1902, but there was a lot of opposition to the 1902 Education Act from Board supporters because of the curtailment of educational and political opportunities for the working classes. School Board election issues, economics, compulsory education and religious education, are considered. The overriding issue was religion, and this gave rise to the sectarianism at School Board elections. The religious battle was fought first through national politics and then through local politics. An ironical outcome of this locally was the development of a degree of religious toleration and understanding. Understanding also arose from the intermingling of classes and sexes at School Board elections and on Boards them• selves. The future of society was greatly affected by this. All types of peoples rich and poor, stood for School Boards, showing the importance placed on education. However, the enthusiasm of working class parents, highlighted by their participation in or opposition to School Boards, as well as the reasons for this is also discussed. To show that Board School education was not all that was available for working class children, other educational agencies are looked at. Their importance and the effect of School Boards upon them are also followed up. One aspect of this, the rivalry between Voluntary and Board Schools, is seen throughout the period, and this played a part in influencing the events of 1902. The local element of School Board elections is considered by looking more closely at Durham, Hedworth, Monkton and Jarrow, and Darlington. The differences between these three Boards also helps to illustrate the differences between School Boards in general. The political opportunities made available in North East England by the 1870 Education Act and how the area was affected are thus seen. Starting with the inter-war period, it looks at the changing position adopted by the British state vis-a-vis development aid to its colonies up to the formation of the Department for International Development in the late 1990s. The study argues that during this period, the nature of state-sponsored international development aid has transformed significantly to a point of self-redundancy.

  • 'PM Made Me an MP': the Social, Occupational, and Denominational
    ‘PM made me an MP’: the social, occupational, and denominational background of the MPs. This appendix provides brief biographical details of those MPs named as Primitive Methodists or as close associates in Church publications during 1874-1932. It focuses on their social and occupational background and their relationship to the Church. Although most were members, usually local preachers or officials, a minority were, at most, hearers – sometimes merely former Sunday School pupils or occasional attendees at Primitive chapels. Omitted are those MPs who were first elected after Methodist Union. However, Primitive politicians active after 1932 identified during the course of this research were Edwin Gooch, Bertie Hazell, the ‘Welsh Primitive Methodist Marxist’ Harold Davies, Eric Ogden, John Beavan, John Ellis, and Ted Willis – all Labour MPs or Peers.1 In addition to the footnoted sources, the information has been derived from Hansard, Debrett’s House of Commons, census returns and BMD records. The term ‘miners’ agent’, or similar, describes a multiplicity of roles and essentially means a paid union official or elected representative of any rank: essentially a Labour Movement activist. The letters LC indicate those who served as local councillors; many of these, such as John Johnson, were mayors or, like Ben Spoor, leaders of their councils.2 Joseph Arch (1826-1919) Norfolk North Western: 1885-1886 and 1892-1900 Liberal Joseph’s father was an agricultural labourer, as was Arch himself before becoming a national agent of the Agricultural Labourers’ Union. The data has been captured from various statutory lists that have been compiled over the years by the Secretary of State for different parts of the Borough. Some of the information has been amended for clarity where a building has been demolished/de- listed, or an address has changed. Each entry represent a single ‘listing’ and these are arranged by parish or town. The vast majority of entries are in one-to-a-page format, although some of the more recent listings are more detailed and lengthy descriptions, spilling over to 2 or 3 pages. BACKGROUND The first listings, in what is now the Borough of Darlington, were made in 1952. The urban area was the subject of a comprehensive re-survey in 1977, and the rural area in 1986 (western parishes) and 1988 (eastern parishes). A number of formal changes to the lists have been made since, as individual buildings have been ‘spot-listed’, de-listed, had grades changed, descriptions altered and mistakes corrected.     A HISTORY OF CLUB CRICKET IN COUNTY DURHAM Chapter One..........The eighteenth century In the beginning The first recorded cricket match in Durham was at Raby Castle in 1751. It was five years after the Duke of Cumberland and bayoneted Redcoats slogged through the county’s mud on their way to the Battle of Culloden. Defoe’s account of his travels through Great Britain had not long been published. Defoe found nothing remarkable in Darlington or Chester-le-Street except “dirt” but was impressed by Lumley Castle and acknowledged Lumley coal the best in the country. He thought Durham a “compact neatly contriv’d city” where clergy lived “in all the splendour and magnificence imaginable”. Durham cathedral and Saint Cuthbert’s remains were a shrine for pilgrims but the city was a vulnerable haven riding on a cut-throat sea. The poor lived in slums; the populace was prey to vagabonds, footpads and highwaymen. The Bishop of Durham bewailed “the scorn of religion”. His flock scratched a living on the land or burrowed beneath it for lead and coal; their leisure centred upon drinking and blood sports like cock-fighting. In 1742 John Wesley came across a village “inhabited by colliers only, and as such had been always in the first rank for savage ignorance, and wickedness of every kind. Their grand assembly used to be on the Lord’s Day on which men, women and children met together to dance, fight, curse, and swear, and play chuck-ball, span farthing, or whatever came to hand.” Somehow, sometime the game of cricket took root in these parts.
