Hovercraft design – Apply Newton’s Laws of Motion to design and build a hovercraft while gaining an understanding of the practical applications of hovercraft technology. Predict how this technology will influence human modes of future transportation. Universal hovercraft demo – See a real hovercraft in action. www.hovercraft.com/content Costume contest – Come dressed in Star Wars ™ costume for a chance to win prizes. Contestants will be judged on costume, make-up, resemblance to character, poise & confidence as well as audience reception. Participants will be divided into categories by age. Yoda crafts – Young Jedi will design their very own “take home” Yoda. Robotics challenge – Participants will gain an understanding of how difficult it is to program robots to perform specific tasks. They will analyze balance and other concepts in order to better understand the laws of gravity. LEGO® levitation and Maglev demos – Be amazed by demonstrations of the properties of magnetism. Learn how opposite poles attract and like poles repel, then apply the concepts to make cool mini-science fiction vehicles such as landspeeders and hovercrafts. Space snaps – No Star Wars ™ event would be complete without the opportunity to let your imagination run wild and capture the moment with a “selfie” using an assortment of Star Wars ™ props. Be sure to tag us on Twitter @spacecenterhou Workshops 10:30 a.m., Noon, Jedi Training with Obi Shawn – Young Jedi-in-training will learn the ancient secrets of The Force as Obi Shawn and his assistants teach the 1:30 p.m. & 3 p.m. ways of the Jedi. In doing so, they have developed patronage and public familiarity for the vast array of dance companies thriving within the greater Houston area. Through their summer camps and educational programs, they have provided the holistic benefits of dance education to over 5,000 children. This was the first of two library events aimed at Star Wars fans featuring members of Vader’s 501st Legion, an Ocean County based Star Wars fan club. Members were dressed in highly detailed costumes from the film series. The group performs at conventions, libraries, and charities year round. Children and their parents came dressed in colorful T-shirts and costumes to meet the 501st Legion. Other Star Wars characters included a cloaked Jawa who posed for photos with fans during the event. Activities included galactic games and creating light sabers out of freezer pops and duct tape, so little Padawans could take the fun home. If you missed your chance to explore the galaxy, don’t worry. This program will be repeated at the Ocean County Library’s Little Egg Harbor branch at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20. The outdoor event will include crafts, games, alien face painting and a battlestar balloon game plus a return visit by the 501st Legion. Admission for the Little Egg Harbor branch “Star Wars Day” program is free but registration is required.

However, after the 501st Legion had established a foothold in Umbaran soil and was permitted some time to rest, command was transferred from General Skywalker to General Pong Krell, because Skywalker was called back to Coruscant at the request of both the Supreme Chancellor and the Jedi Council.

The 501st Legion is a worldwide, professional costuming organization dedicated to the Dark Side characters of the Star Wars Universe. Over 13,000 members passionately recreate accurate costumes of the many iconic characters portrayed in movies, books, video games, comics, and TV shows. Garrison Corellia was created out of Garrison Carida, which was originally made up of Pennsylvania, Delaware, and West Virginia. Carida members from West Virginia created a small unit called Squad Corellia in December 2012. There were 10 founding members that met at a restaurant to discuss the creation of the Squad and decided the state was ready to strike out on its own. In November 2015, there were enough members to form a Garrison. As of 2018, the state group has more than 50 members stretching from the panhandles to the southern coalfields. Garrison Corellia is proud to participate in a wide array of charity and non-profit events throughout our state and within our local communities. Freely volunteering our time to help others while celebrating Star Wars, our members are always looking for opportunities to contribute, inspire and spread joy to the communities and state of West Virginia.

Used with permission. 1 “Hokey Religions: Star Wars and Star Trek in the Age of Reboots” Gerry Canavan In the last few years debates over stewardship, fidelity, and corporate ownership have arisen in both STAR WARS and STAR TREK1 fandom, as long-standing synchronicity between corporate interest and fan investment in these franchises has suddenly and very sharply diverged. After several decades nurturing hyperbolic “expanded universes” in tie- in media properties, through which devoted fans might more fully inhabit the narrative worlds depicted in the more central film and television properties, the corporate owners of both properties have determined that their commercial interests now lie in reboots that eliminate those decades of excess continuity and allow the properties to “start fresh” with clean entry points for a new generation of fans. In the case of STAR WARS, the ongoing narrative has been streamlined by prioritizing only the six films and certain television programs as “canonical” and relegating the rest to the degraded status of apocryphal “Star Wars Legends,” in hopes of drawing in rather than alienating potential viewers of the forthcoming Episodes 7-9 (2015-2019). In the case of STAR TREK, the transformation is even more radical; utilizing a diegetic time-travel plotline originating within the fictional universe itself, the franchise has been “reset” to an altered version of its original 1960s incarnation, seemingly relegating every STAR TREK property filmed or published before 2009 to the dustbin of future history—in effect obsolescing its entire fifty-year history, “canon” and “non-canon” alike, in the name of attracting a new audience for the rebooted franchise.

ABSTRACT Mythic narratives exert a powerful influence over societies, and few mythic narratives carry as much weight in modern culture as the Star Wars franchise. Disney’s 2012 purchase of Lucasfilm opened the door for new films in the franchise. 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the second of these films, takes place in the fictional hours and minutes leading up to the events portrayed in 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Changes to the fundamental myths underpinning the Star Wars narrative and the unique connection between these film have created important implications for the public memory of the original film. I examine these changes using Campbell’s hero’s journey and Lawrence and Jewett’s American monomyth. In this thesis I argue that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was likely conceived as a means of updating the public memory of the original 1977 film.

    58 • Articles • Across the Star Wars Universe: A Journey into the World of the Italian Star Wars Fandom GIADA BASTANZI Università Ca’ Foscari of Venice ANDREA FRANCESCHETTI Università Ca’ Foscari of Venice Abstract: In this essay, we perform ethnographic fieldwork on the costuming, prop-making, and performances of the 501st Italica Garrison, the Italian sub-section of the 501st Legion, drawing on the "language" and "speech" theories of Gilbert Ryle and J. N. Findlay (Ryle & Findlay, 1961) and the theoretical position on "strategies" and "tactics" of Michael de Certeau (de Certeau, 2001). While considering the Star Wars franchise and its narratives as a "social phenomenon," we will examine if and how the official Italian fandom’s tactics and performances conform to Henry Jenkins’ concept of "textual poaching" (Jenkins, 2005). In fact, prop-making and collecting performances are in dialectical relation to the narratives of George Lucas, as Lucas’s narratives are in relation to the concepts of Joseph Campbell’s Hero With a Thousand Faces (Campbell, 1949). As part of an enormous economic operation, the animation corporation put efforts into broadening the worldwide Star Wars franchise to cultivate the brand and reach more people than ever before. "A long time ago," in 1977, the first film in the franchise, Star Wars: A New Hope was released, creating a generation of fans—and nearly 25 years later, in 2001, The Phantom Menace was released. The new trilogy drew to Star Wars an entirely new generation of fans.

This Sacramento Zoo will bring the big screen to life with a visit from Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, Stormtroopers, Sandtroopers, Biker Scouts, and other Imperial characters. The day’s festivities will also focus on conservation and education with Star Wars themed enrichments for the animals and children’s crafts. WHERE: Sacramento Zoo, at the corner of Land Park Dr. and Sutterville Rd. in William Land Park. WHEN: The event will occur from 9 am to 4 pm, Saturday, April 30. Costumed characters will be available for photo opportunities from 10 am to 2 pm. May the forest be with you at the Sacramento Zoo on Saturday, April 30th. The Zoo will celebrate galaxies near and far with some of your favorite Star Wars characters. Visitors are encouraged to bring their cameras to capture a memorable photo with the costumed characters from 10 am to 2 pm. Guests will learn how animal adaptations and behaviors in our galaxy relate to the creatures from the Star Wars universe through stage shows, crafts and other activities. The animals will join in on the fun as they enjoy special Star Wars themed enrichment items throughout the day, and Star Wars music will play on the Conservation Carousel.     New England’s 501st: Bad Guys Who Do Good When you were a kid, chances are you looked up to the good guys: Luke Skywalker, Superman, that guy from those wizard movies, etc. But have you ever thought about being the bad guy? Since 1997, The 501st Legion, a.k.a “Vader’s Fist,” have been dressing up as the villains from Star Wars and showing up to do some good at everything from Knights of Columbus blood drives to huge conventions. You may think the life of a Star Wars villain costumer is all groupies and partying, but these guys are all about giving back to their communities. They’ve worked with a long list of charities around the country, including The American Cancer Society, The Jimmy Fund and March of Dimes. They don’t charge for appearances, but instead encourage donations to your favorite charity. The legion, a worldwide organization with thousands of members and chapters all over the U.S., has left its mark on the whole Star Wars universe, earning their way into the fake history books. Founder Albin Johnson admits that he just made up an official-sounding name to make his fan club sound badass. But in 2004, Timothy Zahn, author of many Star Wars expanded universe novels, added the fighting 501st into his writing. The legion has since gone on to be featured in much of the Lucas universe, including the Battlefront video games and toys.
