    Demographics, Wealth, and Global Imbalances in the Twenty-First Century § Adrien Auclert∗ Hannes Malmbergy Frédéric Martenetz Matthew Rognlie August 2021 Abstract We use a sufficient statistic approach to quantify the general equilibrium effects of population aging on wealth accumulation, expected asset returns, and global im- balances. Combining population forecasts with household survey data from 25 coun- tries, we measure the compositional effect of aging: how a changing age distribution affects wealth-to-GDP, holding the age profiles of assets and labor income fixed. In a baseline overlapping generations model this statistic, in conjunction with cross- sectional information and two standard macro parameters, pins down general equi- librium outcomes. Since the compositional effect is positive, large, and heterogeneous across countries, our model predicts that population aging will increase wealth-to- GDP ratios, lower asset returns, and widen global imbalances through the twenty-first century. At the top level of the game – at international level, and at the level of counties in England and their equivalent in other leading countries – cricket is played in three different ‘formats’. The longest-established is ‘first-class cricket’, which includes Test matches as well as matches in England’s County Championship, the Sheffield Shield in Australia, the Ranji Trophy in India, and equivalent competitions in other countries. First-class matches are scheduled to be played over at least 3 days, and each team is normally entitled to have two innings in this period. Next is ‘List A’ cricket – matches played on a single day and in which each team is limited in the number of overs that it can bat or bowl.     CRICKETING CHANCES G. L. Cohen Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty of Science University of Technology, Sydney PO Box 123, Broadway NSW 2007, Australia [email protected] Abstract Two distinct aspects of the application of probabilistic reasoning to cricket are considered here. First, the career bowling figures of the members of one team in a limited-overs competition are used to determine the team bowling strike rate and hence the probability of dismissing the other team. This takes account of the chances of running out an opposing batsman and demonstrates that the probability of dismissing the other team is approximately doubled when there is a good likelihood of a run-out. Second, we show that under suitable assumptions the probability distribution of the number of scoring strokes made by a given batsman in any innings is geometric. With the further assumption (which we show to be tenable) that the ratio of runs made to number of scoring strokes is a constant, we are able to derive the expression (A/(A + 2))0/2 as the approximate probability of the batsman scoring at least c runs (c ~ 1), where A is the batsman's average score over all past innings. In both cases, the results are compared favourably with results from the history of cricket. 1 Introduction In an excellent survey of papers written on statistics (the more mathematical kind) applied to cricket, Clarke [2] writes that cricket "has the distinction of being the first sport used for the illustration of statistics", but: "In contrast to baseball, few papers in the professional literature analyse cricket, and two rarely analyse the same topic."
