Plant climbing by means of modified branches and by large recurved hooks. Leaves Leaf blades about 9-18 x 3-6.5 cm, petioles about 0.7-1.2 cm long, narrowly grooved on the upper surface. Leaf blade margins very finely and regularly toothed almost from the base to the apex. Domatia not clearly defined, being small inconspicuous tufts of hair. Flowers Inflorescence up to 15 cm long. Flowers about 2 mm diam. Calyx tube (hypanthium) about 0.75-1 mm long. Leaves and Flowers. Copyright CSIRO Calyx lobes about 1-1.25 mm long. Petals about 0.5 mm long, each encompassing a stamen. Anthers about 0.25 mm long, filaments about 1 mm long. Ovary about 0.5 mm long. Fruit Fruits globose, about 8-12 mm diam. Perianth remnants sometimes present at the base. Seeds usually one or two per fruit. Seeds flattened, about 6-8 x 5-6 mm, notched at the apex or on the side towards the apex. Endosperm scanty. Cotyledons about 4.5 x 4 mm, distinctly bilobed at the apex. Radicle about 1 mm long. Seedlings Cotyledons about 7 x 5 mm, the apex deeply emarginate or bilobed, base +/- attenuate except for a slight lobe on each side. At the tenth leaf stage: leaf blade +/- elliptical, apex acuminate, base cuneate, margin Scale bar 10mm. Copyright CSIRO serrate with more than 50 teeth on each side. Leaf blade about 9-10 x 3-4 cm. Midrib depressed on the upper surface. Stipules linear, about 3-4 mm long. Seed germination time 42 days. Distribution and Ecology Occurs in NEQ. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 1000 m. Usually grows in well developed upland rain forest particularly the drier more seasonal forests. Also occurs in China, Vietnam to India and the Philippines.
