We are living in a time of plague. The dark statistics noted and commented on by Daniel Dafoe or the states of mind we know from Albert Camus's novel, and its film adaptation by Luis Puenzo, have become our sad reality. It is up to us if we give in to despair and a sense of insignificance. It is up to us if we accept the alienation. Let us take all the precautions we can, but hygiene should not be limited to the body. Let us oppose the terrifying advent of the plague with a persistent effort to keep our own significance. I would like to invite everyone to the EnergaCAMERIMAGE festival in Toruñ, whichever way you choose to get here. We are waiting in screening rooms, at seminars, and exhibitions, but also online. In a year fraught with uncertainty and growing sense of unease, this little publication receives its first ever – online issue – one of the many messengers of change that the year 2020 has already brought to our way of doing things... How is a cinematography festival even possible online? Let's try and figure this out together, shall we? For the first time ever, selected EnergaCAMERIMAGE screenings will be available online on our dedicated festival platform. Please refer to the symbols used throughout this booklet to learn more about the type of screening your chosen films are subject to. More information you should keep in mind about our online screenings: Online screening start times and dates mirror the physical schedule of our festival. SCREENING DETAILS HELMUT NEWTON: I LIKE STRONG WOMEN Exhibition CSW - Centre of Contemporary Art in Toruñ, 13 Wa³y Gen. Sikorskiego St. The 28th edition of the EnergaCAMERIMAGE Festival in Toruñ is accompanied by a retrospective exhibition - Helmut Newton: I like strong women. Helmut Newton is without a doubt one of the most controversial artists of the 20th century. His photographs, initially documenting fashion, eventually became provocative works of art. Photographing models, even dressed in accordance with the latest trends, quickly bored the ambitious artist interested in constantly pushing the boundaries forward - which we are able to see clearly in the retro- spective of Helmut Newton's works at CSW in Toruñ. The exhibition is divided thematically and consists of over 200 photos. Several categories, among which we can find fashion, nudity, humor and portraits, illustrate all the tendencies in which Newton created. Visitors will also have the chance to watch documentary films about the artist screened at the CSW's cinema and attend meetings with representatives of the world of fashion, photo- graphy and film. The works displayed in Toruñ are the essence of Helmut Newton's style. First, we observe classic fashion photographs in which the body is only used to present the outfit. Then, a breakthrough takes place in Newton's approach - the body becomes an autonomous element of the performance. With the help of ubiquitous eroticism, the artist expresses himself on the subject of culture and customs that he sees in a clearly decadent manner. Nudes, performed in elegant interiors, are simultaneously juxtaposed with dangerous objects that gravitate towards the dark side of human nature. Domination or enslavement used in Newton's frame refer to the cult of the body that prevailed at the end of the 20th century and continues to this day. In the spaces of CSW - Centre of Contemporary Art, we can see photos of models taken for various editions of "Vogue" magazine. Here, we can already observe a preview of the artist's later fascinations. The position of the body, background elements and often the smallest details are a harbinger of changes that can be seen from under the illusion of photos from the magazine for housewives. The ones from the initial period of his career, often made against a neutral, white background, despite the minimalism characteristic of the 1960s aesthetics, hide the prophecy of the artist's later concepts of the body in the deformed positions of the models. In Newton's portraits, we can also find cruel irony aimed at perfectly created images from the world of high-life magazines - from the fascinating, tragically endearing photos of outstanding characters related to the film (Leni Riefenstahl, Billy Wilder), dictators who set trends in the fashion world (Karl Lagerfeld, Yves Saint-Laurent), to the celebrities of these times, wandering around the nooks and crannies of the great world (Paloma Picasso). In photo- graphs taken at the end of his life, Newton replaced human bodies with manne- quins. By treating our bodies in this way, taking the effects of retouching as a model, we become victims of an artificial reality which we let ourselves be enslaved to, similarly to Newton's photographic "models". It is a trap in which we voluntarily find ourselves. The exhibition is traditionally accompanied by a film review, which includes documentary films whose protagonists are famous photographers of the world of fashion and art: the title artist of this year's exhibition, Helmut Newton (Germany), Lene Marie Fossen (Norway) and Inta Ruka (Latvia). The exhibition was organized by the Tumult Foundation and Centre of Contem- porary Art, in co-operation with the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin. curators: dr Matthias Harder, Marek ¯ydowicz The exhibition will be open until 28th March 2021

Keats, Shelley, Ghosts and Lovers one-man-show was inspired by Sands’ visits in Keats-Shelley House in Rome and the preface for the latest anthology, John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley: Essential Poems, which he was asked to write by the House. His show was first staged there, as a part of their Keats-Shelley 200 campaign, which was started to commemorate key dates in the lives of the poets. The actor is well-known all over the world for his parts in A Room with a View, Leaving Las Vegas, Ocean’s 13, and The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo and for his television appearances in Smallville, Dexter and Banshee, among others. He recently toured numerous countries with A Celebration of Harold Pinter, directed by John Malkovich.

INFORMATION FOR ENTRY CARD HOLDERS

In order to participate in film screenings the entry card holder needs to book free tickets through online.camerimage.pl. All seminars, Q&As, press conferences and other live events will be available without the need to make an individual booking.

Online booking starts on Nov. 13th and from then on will be available for the current and following day of the Festival.

The booking instruction is available at www.energacamerimage.pl.

Entry Cards for both offline & online access may only be collected by the Participant (in person) in Festival Reception Desk – CKK Jordanki, Aleja Solidarnoœci 1-3 street, 87-100 Toruñ.

Entry Cards for online access alone will be provided by email.

Materials available on the online platform will be available in English only (except for film screenings which will also be available in Polish).

Depending on the arrangements with distributors, access may be geo- blocked for some online film screenings, as per marking in the schedule.
