Disease risk management, self-care, reduction of negative drug interactions, falls and injury prevention, stress management, holistic health care, and mind/body medicine are a few examples of these innovations. An integral part of this evolution of health care has been the growing importance of various forms of exercise modalities originating from Asia, including Qi Gong and Tai Chi. Qi Gong and Tai Chi are practices involving movement and meditation based on ancient Chinese philosophies that are purported to promote mental and physical health, vitality, and longevity. Refined in Asia for hundreds of years as a means of promoting health and functional well-being, these practices are also revered for the cultivation of social and spiritual values.1 In recent years, increasing attention in the West has focused on the benefits of Qi Gong and Tai Chi as forms of gentle physical activity for promoting health and well-being and as a moving meditation for stress management and disease risk reduction. -

The authors will discuss the nature of the relationship between the various martial arts and the “psycho-phys- ical culture”. We will approach this topic from the perspectives of the Humanistic Theory of Martial Arts, martial arts systemic anthropology, and the sociology of psycho-physical systems. Methods. The main method of research has been a qualitative content analysis of the literature (scientific and popular) acquired through a query library. We studied material gathered under the theme “Martial Arts” in the Library of the University of Rzeszow, as well as a list of recommended literature suggested by the International Martial Arts and Combat Sports Scientific Society (IMACSSS) Results. Four dimensions have been traditionally investigated to justify the assignment of martial arts to the area of psycho-physical culture. These are: (1) The presence in most martial arts of an original philosophy, especially one demanding a code of ethics: (2) A close, almost “genetic” relationships between martial arts and various applicable religious systems and traditions of applied social ethics; (3) The continuing emphasis on the area of physical culture as it relates to personality development and human spirituality; and (4) the presence in schools of martial arts of ceremonial events attached to “passages” in personal growth. -

Tai chi and qi gong are mind-body practices that have been used for thousands of years to promote health. Tai chi is one form of qi gong, but there are some differences in how they are practiced. Both target the energy of the body, traditionally called “qi” (pronounced “chee”), via focused breath and movements. Tai chi means “Grand Ultimate Fist” in Chinese, and it has origins in various martial arts practices. Martial Arts, Acting, and Critical Responses to Jet Li’s Once Upon A Time In China Introduction It has been commonplace in western critical discourse to state that action stars can’t act. This seems particularly true when it comes to trans-bordering Chinese action stars like Jet Li. Criticism of his acting skills in his English-language films can be easily picked up from the press: Without the fight scenes, though, this film (Romeo Must Die) would be a bust… ‘Jet is our special effect,’ says Silver, summing up his star’s appeal neatly.1 Li’s martial arts skills are as brilliant as his acting skills aren’t.2 The action is fun and ultra-violent, the story is satisfactorily ridiculous and the acting is non-existent.3 “Good martial artist with limited acting ability” seems to represent a popular view of Chinese martial arts stars and indeed this is how they are often used in Hollywood films. Nevertheless, such a view also reveals a deep-rooted bias, i.e. the martial arts star is someone who knows less about acting than s/he does about fighting. The Politics of Inner Power: The Practice of Pencak Silat in West Java By Ian Douglas Wilson Ph.D. Thesis School of Asian Studies Murdoch University Western Australia 2002 Declaration This is my own account of the research and contains as its main content, work which has not been submitted for a degree at any university Signed, Ian Douglas Wilson Abstract Pencak silat is a form of martial arts indigenous to the Malay derived ethnic groups that populate mainland and island Southeast Asia. Far from being merely a form of self- defense, pencak silat is a pedagogic method that seeks to embody particular cultural and social ideals within the body of the practitioner. The history, culture and practice of pencak in West Java is the subject of this study. As a form of traditional education, a performance art, a component of ritual and community celebrations, a practical form of self-defense, a path to spiritual enlightenment, and more recently as a national and international sport, pencak silat is in many respects unique. It is both an integrative and diverse cultural practice that articulates a holistic perspective on the world centering upon the importance of the body as a psychosomatic whole. Changing socio-cultural conditions in Indonesia have produced new forms of pencak silat. Increasing government intervention in pencak silat throughout the New Order period has led to the development of nationalized versions that seek to inculcate state-approved values within the body of the practitioner. Pencak silat groups have also been mobilized for the purpose of pursuing political aims. Some practitioners have responded by looking inwards, outlining a path to self-realization framed by the powers, flows and desires found within the body itself. -
