GROUP NEWS IS PRINTED BY: HOLLINGER Print ltd, 01603 309000 www.hollinger.co.uk 2 With thanks to Nicola Ford for the Editorial: ‘It’s always the same and it’s always amazing’, my mother-in-law simply said when I chatted to her about Easter and she wasn’t just talking about Cadbury’s Creme eggs. I’ve celebrated Easter every year of my life and whilst I know the story so well, each year something new speaks to me as I grasp what happened over those few days 2000 years ago. Each time I read the story of Jesus’ death I see it from different points of view; the demoralised disciples as their hero is taken down, the traumatised mother watching as her first born is executed, the smug politicians as a threat is silenced and Jesus as he takes in the magnitude of what he was about to do. We’ve all known suffering, particularly in this last year. Even if we’ve not experienced suffering personally, we’ve known people who are ill, dying or down on their luck. We’ve seen it in the headlines every day. What the Easter story tells us is that we are not alone in our suffering, in our grief, it tells us that Jesus stands in solidarity with us through the pain, he weeps with us and he grieves with us; he knows what it’s like to suffer. In times of suffering in my life, when I’ve been demoralised like the disciples, traumatised like Mary, when friends have let me down or I am daunted by the road ahead, I know from Jesus’ life that I am not alone. We also get to hear the end of the Easter story, which gives us a clue to the end of our story. From death came new life; Jesus did not just suffer and die, he also rose again, defeating death. This has led to the common line in Easter hymns ‘Death has lost its sting’. And so this Easter as you see the signs of new life used to portray Easter: the chocolate eggs, the budding Spring flowers and the cute little Easter bunnies, be reminded that these point to the story which gives us hope and company in our suffering. Easter is always the same and it’s always amazing. Nicola is an Ordinand (trainee Vicar), living in Barnham Broom. Garvestone, Reymerston & Thuxton Parish Council The Parish Council is continuing to hold its meetings virtually using Zoom. Members of the public are welcome to observe and can speak in the public session. Agendas are put on the village noticeboards one week before each meeting and details can also be found on the website, or you can ring the Parish Clerk. The next meeting is on Monday April 19th. Excessive lighting can damage the rural character of our parishes and can be a nuisance to neighbours. The Parish Council supports the Campaign to Protect Rural England's stance on light pollution and at it’s request, Breckland Council includes the CPRE Light Pollution Clause outdoor lighting guidelines in the condition of new planning applications in the parish. The Parish Council would like to ask all residents to ensure that their outdoor lighting is not causing unnecessary light pollution, nuisance to others and confusion to drivers. The main light pollution problem we have in the parish is external lighting which is not on motion sensors and so is on unnecessarily at all times.

  • The Remembrance Project 2018 the Barnham Broom and Upper Yare
The Remembrance Project 2018 The Barnham Broom and Upper Yare Group of Parishes consists of the following Churches & Villages: Wramplingham Barford Barnham Broom Carleton Forehoe Kimberley Hardingham Cranworth Southburgh Letton Reymerston Garvestone Thuxton Whinburgh Westfield Runhall Coston Across the villages there are several war memorials, put up to honour the fallen in WWI, and added to after WWII. As the centenary of the end of WWI approaches in November 2018, there are many events organised within our villages and county. As part of this, in collaboration with other events organised, is a plan to gather together the stories of the lives of the men named on these war memorials, to refresh the memory, and remember the sacrifice they gave so that we could live in the freedom and peace we have today. To do this, volunteers are invited to research one or more names on the attached list of all those named on all of the village memorials, to gather together their stories for publication, and hopefully to enter into memorial books in each of the churches for posterity. We aim to learn from each other as we do this, sharing our findings with others in our community, to create a living memorial. If you wish to take part, please select a name from the list below and research that person using the attached guide to help. If a name is ‘greyed out’ in means it has already been selected for research. Please gather your research together in a short biography of the soldier (approx. 200 words), for publication. Once selected, please let the co-ordinator know so that the name can be marked as being researched.

  • A Brief History of Garveston, Thuxton & Reymerston
A brief history of Garveston, Thuxton & Reymerston Late Neolithic & Bronze Age 2800 BC-700 BC In the Bronze age people in this area cleared forests for fuel & farming, mined flint, kept animals, grew crops (spelt wheat, barley, flax, horse-beans, linseed) made pottery & metalwork & built henges (Arminghall is the nearest known). There is some evidence of early settlements in Garveston, Thuxton & Reymerston, where flints, axe-heads, axe- hammers, polstave, ring-ditches & barrows have been found. Nearby there is evidence of other early settlements in Grimes Graves & but also unexcavated sites at Great Melton, Ringland & Carleton Forehoe. Iron Age 700 BC - 50 AD Iron Age pottery has been found in Garveston, Thuxton & Reymerston, providing more evidence of early settlement in our villages. Wymondham & Caistor St Edmund had large settlements, known as Oppida. At this time local people still made their own pottery but there has also been finds of pottery imported from Europe. The first coins began to be used in the area from about 100BC. The iron-age tribe in Norfolk & North Suffolk was the Iceni which had different coinage & decorations to the other main tribes in East Anglia. About this time enclosed forts appear on the Norfolk landscape. Throughout Norfolk there has been many finds of iron age jewellery, weapons & coins, such as the the Snettisham Hoard, now in the British museum, but also findings at Whinburgh in 2011 and Thuxton in the 1960s. Roman Period 43 BC - 410 AD After the first Roman invasion of Britain under Julius Caesar, Roman influence increased throughout the land, with Britons trading with Romans in slaves, wine & grain.
