Kantor Center Position Papers Editor: Mikael Shainkman January 2018 ANTISEMITISM IN THE RADICAL LEFT AND THE BRITISH LABOUR PARTY Dave Rich* Executive Summary Antisemitism has become a national political issue and a headline story in Britain for the first time in decades because of ongoing problems in the Labour Party. Labour used to enjoy widespread Jewish support but increasing left wing hostility towards Israel and Zionism, and a failure to understand and properly oppose contemporary antisemitism, has placed increasing distance between the party and the UK Jewish community. This has emerged under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, a product of the radical 1960s New Left that sees Israel as an apartheid state created by colonialism, but it has been building on the fringes of the left for decades. Since Corbyn became party leader, numerous examples of antisemitic remarks made by Labour members, activists and elected officials have come to light. These remarks range from opposition to Israel’s existence or claims that Zionism collaborated with Nazism, to conspiracy theories about the Rothschilds or ISIS. The party has tried to tackle the problem of antisemitism through procedural means and generic declarations opposing antisemitism, but it appears incapable of addressing the political culture that produces this antisemitism: possibly because this radical political culture, borne of anti-war protests and allied to Islamist movements, is precisely where Jeremy Corbyn and his closest associates find their political home. A Crisis of Antisemitism Since early 2016, antisemitism has become a national political issue in Britain for the first time in decades. This hasn’t come about because of a surge in support for the far right, or jihadist terrorism against Jews. -

It came at a moment like no other in our lifetime. This pandemic has highlighted the desperate fragility of the state’s safety net: from our chronically underfunded NHS and care service, to our neglected social security system and the lack of protection for the self-employed and small businesses. These are just some of the many issues facing our country, issues I am determined the next Labour government will fix. But to do that, we have to win. And to win, we must first earn the right to be heard. Because the harsh truth is that across the East of England, as in many other parts of the country, too many voters feel that for too long Labour hasn’t been listening to them and, as a result, hasn’t been speaking for them. My job, as leader, is to rebuild trust in our party as a force for change. That is why I’ve been hosting a number of listening events with voters we have lost in seats we need to win – including many in the East of England. It is only by understanding the root causes to our four successive election defeats that we can finally begin the process of rebuilding, to put Labour back on the path to power and help deliver the vital change that our country desperately needs. -

The establishment of the Jewish state seemed to force people on the left to choose between competing nationalisms - Israeli, Arab and later, Palestinian. Over time, a number of key developments sharpened the dilemma. My central focus is the evolution of thinking about Israel and the Middle East in the British Labour Party. I examine four critical periods: the creation of Israel in 1948; the Suez war in 1956; the Arab-Israeli war of 1967 and the 1980s, covering mainly the Israeli invasion of Lebanon but also the intifada. In each case, entrenched attitudes were called into question and longer-term shifts were triggered in the aftermath. -

Canada’s Labour Movement in Crisis The Crisis in the ATU: Labour Shoots Itself in the Foot By Prof. Sam Gindin and Herman Rosenfeld Region: Canada Global Research, March 15, 2017 Theme: Police State & Civil Rights, Poverty Socialist Project & Social Inequality A sign of the tragic disarray of the Canadian labour movement is the extent to which its misadventures keep piling up. As the turmoil within the union representing the Ontario government’s unionized employees (Ontario Public Service Employees Union – OPSEU) hits the press, the chaos continues in Local 113 of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU). The 10,500 members in that local – over a third of the ATU’s Canadian membership – operate and maintain Toronto’s transit system, North America’s third largest public transit system, behind only New York and Mexico City. As with OPSEU, the acrimonious story is not about a tough strike or a response to an anti-union government. Rather, at a time when the union should be leading the charge to address popular frustrations with the failures in the city’s transit system, the local is preoccupied with a messy internal battle. Members of ATU Local 113 who work for Veolia Tansport on strike, October 2011 to Januay 2012. Local 113 President Bob Kinnear had attempted to break away from its American-based parent and, in what was quickly apparent, to join Unifor, Canada’s largest private sector union. For the time being he has clearly failed. The tale is mired in territorial conflicts over the members involved, legacies of personal nastiness among Canadian union leaders, whispers of conspiracy on the part of Unifor and the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), of national flag waving and charges of U.S. -

It is up to people like you to make certain that mankind retains responsibility for and control of his environment and does not let the world slide into a state of confusion merely for lack of thought or foresight.” – HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, 1962 The success at Oxford in 1956 did not appear, initially at least, to portend a second Conference. Indeed, the Oxford Conference trustees – the Council – met on November 23, 1956, to begin dismantling the body that had carried the day so well four months earlier. The minutes of that meeting, under the chairmanship of Sir Harold Hartley, record that the first order of business was the terms of reference “to supervise the final winding up of the Conference affairs by the end of 1956 if possible.” Trustees also resolved to “determine and to dispose of any surplus funds at the termination of the Conference.” The Finance Committee reported a balance of £12,458. 9s. 1d. at Barclays Bank. When presented with an estimate of nearly £4,000 to print 5,000 copies of the Conference Report (including “400 presentation copies to be signed by His Royal Highness”), it was agreed “in view of the surplus funds at the disposal of the trustees” to authorize a “first printing” of 6,000 copies, including 3,500 complimentary copies. -
