( Courtesy: Meyer Riegger) RELATED Meyer Riegger, Berlin presents “Erst mit diesem Lack wird Unerhörtes richtig spannend,” a solo exhibition by Robert Janitz. VENUES Meyer Riegger Galerie Robert Janitz is a German-born painter working in New York City. He is known for his large abstract paintings ARTISTS that employ oil in combination with gesso, egg, or wax and flour, on a monochrome background. He explores Robert Janitz themes ranging from the history of portraiture to the mnemonic effects of the surfaces and textures surrounding him, to the sensuous appeal of such mundane sights as buttered bread. In all of his compositions, he foregrounds the process of painting and its material qualities through his luscious application of pigment, subtle color combinations, and the rough edges of his canvases. He has had solo exhibitions in New York, Paris, Berlin, Brussels, and London. Janitz’s work has been reviewed in the New York Times, Die Welt, the New Yorker, and Artforum among other places. “Erst mit diesem Lack wird Unerhörtes richtig spannend” showcases new paintings by Robert Janitz, where, as Piper Marshall notes, “the image materializes only to disappear.” In Janitz’s paintings, there is a distraction, a delay. Each canvas pulls the viewer into a visual relationship. Rather than insisting on a flow into the present, these works agitate. Janitz’s paintings articulate both the process of their making and the limitations of the body to perceive, simultaneously disarticulating the work from his hand to join to the moment of the viewer. The result is a painting that divides as it joins, records as it transmits, receives as it offers reception. The exhibition is on view through August 8, 2017, at Meyer Riegger, Berlin, Friedrichstraße 235, 10969 Berlin, Germany.
