Throughout the report, the notation ICT refers to information and communication technology. SEN is used to denote students who have special educational needs and SENCO refers to the special needs co-ordinator. An LSA is a learning support assistants and an IEP is an individual education plan. PHSE refers to the school’s programme for personal, health and social education. In the sixth form section of the report, comparisons to national averages are based on data for the academic year 2000/2001. When the report was published national comparative data for the academic year 2001/2002 was not available for sixth form education though it had been published, and is used in this report, for Years 7 to 11 inclusive. Millom School - 7 PART A: SUMMARY OF THE REPORT INFORMATION ABOUT THE SCHOOL Millom School is a popular and growing specialist technology college serving the small town of Millom and a large part of rural West Cumbria, a sparsely populated region. Parts of the catchment area are economically disadvantaged and other parts are still recovering from the effects of the 2001 foot and mouth disease epidemic. The school is smaller than average. There are 723 students on roll, including 72 sixth formers. The numbers of boys and girls attending the school are very similar. The students are mainly of white UK origin; less than one per cent of students are from other backgrounds and there are very few students for whom English is an additional language. The proportion of students identified as having special educational needs is broadly average, but the proportion with a Statement of Special Educational Needs is above average. Students’ attainment on entry to the school varies widely but, overall, is below average. HOW GOOD THE SCHOOL IS This is a very good school. Students in Years 7 to 11 achieve very well and the achievement of sixth formers is good. Teaching and learning in all years, including the sixth form, are good. Leadership and management of the school are very good and the school provides good value for money. The cost effectiveness of the sixth form is also good. The principles of best value are thoroughly understood and they are applied very well. The school has recorded a good level of improvement since the last inspection. For the school to improve further, some of the advances it has made need to be fine-tuned in order to improve effectiveness further. What the school does well · The very good leadership of the headteacher, other members of the senior management group and the governing body, in establishing a clear educational direction for the school. · The leadership and management offered by many heads of department. · The quality of teaching and learning in many lessons, including the sixth form. · Achievement is very good; during their time in the school, students make significantly greater progress than students nationally. · The very good provision made for spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and the impact this has on personal development and relationships. · The very good provision made in design and technology. What could be improved · Although standards in ICT are above average and achievement is good, more consistent opportunities need to be provided for students to use ICT as a tool to help their learning. · The more consistent use of assessment information to improve the students’ knowledge of grade criteria, their target grades and what they need to do to achieve them. The areas for improvement will form the basis of the governors’ action plan. HOW THE SCHOOL HAS IMPROVED SINCE ITS LAST INSPECTION The school was previously inspected in March 1997. A good level of improvement has been recorded since this date. The quality of teaching and learning has continued to improve and the majority of lessons are now good or better. This reflects the school’s commitment to raising standards by monitoring and evaluating its work. Good progress has been made against the key issues for development identified in the previous inspection. Standards at the end of Year 9 in the core subjects of English, mathematics and science have risen at least in line with the national pattern and GCSE results at the end of Year 11 and A level results at the end of Year 13, have improved. The school has met or Millom School - 8 exceeded its suitably challenging targets. In relation to its income, the school has continued to show good value for money and it is on course to meet its current targets. When compared to schools having a similar proportion of students eligible for free school meals, results in English and mathematics were well above average and in science they were average. The results in English and mathematics, in particular, when considered against the students’ standards on entry to the school in Year 7, are significantly better than expected and show that the students achieve well during their first three years in the school. At the end of Year 11, the average points scored in GCSE examinations has been increasing and, in 2002, results were well above average.

    About Millom School Millom School is an 11-18 community school, with a current roll of 488 students, and an established sixth form. We regard ourselves as a learning community and understand the importance of investing in our colleagues as well as our students. The school plays a central role in the local community and offers a full range of public services, including adult education, through the Millom Network Centre, which is located on the school site. We provide a friendly, supportive, but structured environment, in which students are given every opportunity to flourish. We have a commitment to professional development for staff and a culture of change and improvement with strong support from senior leadership and the governing body. We are proud of our school, our staff, and our students, and are ambitious for the future. In the immediate locality Millom School plays a key role in the Millom partnership of schools, working with all of the educational establishments from age 0-19. The headteachers meet six times a year to build upon the already widespread shared good practice between the schools. Recent developments include exploring the feasibility of further sharing resources and possibly facilities within a co-location model.     News Release PR 16689 For Immediate Release 25 February 2021 More Covid-19 Lateral Flow Tests centres open around county Essential workers who cannot work from home now have more ways to access regular COVID-19 Rapid Result Lateral Flow testing with eleven testing sites now open in Cumbria. Last week five testing sites opened in Carlisle, Aspatria, Kendal, Penrith, and Millom. This week, six additional sites have been been opened in Barrow in Furness, Dalton, Milnthorpe, Sedburgh, Workington and Whitehaven. Lateral Flow tests give a result in 30 minutes and help identify asymptomatic carriers, people who do have COVID-19 and are infectious but are not ill. These people can then self-isolate to protect others. The testing sites are open to any essential workers who cannot work from home and come into regular contact with other people through their job, and who do not have COVID-19 symptoms. The tests are free and no booking is required, but please note the sites are only open at the times stated. The tests are a major element of Cumbria’s strategy to battle COVID-19 and quickly becoming a routine part of many people’s working lives, with thousands having a test every week. But not all employers are able to provide the testing themselves and that’s where the County’s community testing sites come in. People who do have symptoms of coronavirus should book a test at nhs.uk/coronavirus or by calling 119. They should not attend a Lateral Flow Community Testing Site. Colin Cox, Cumbria’s Director of Public Health, said: “Mass Lateral Flow Testing of those without symptoms is a key part of the strategy for preventing the spread of Covid and getting us out of lockdown.

We would like to welcome Mr.Tatlock who has taken over as our new Site Manager, starting with us before the summer break, Mr.Brown who has joined the Technology Department, Miss Johnston who has joined the Science department, Mr. Sunter who is our new Head of Franklin House and cover supervisor, Miss Lawson has taken over the SSCo role and Miss Hudson is our new Teaching Assistant. Welcome back to the start of our new academic year. We were delighted with our exam results; 100% achieved 7 A*- G at GCSE, 97% achieved 8 A*-G, 100% achieved 1 A*- C and 66% achieved 5 A*-C which is above our FFTD target. Many of our pupils achieved 13 good GCSEs. We also had great success at Yr10 with Zoe Forster achieving two grade „A‟ GCSEs in one year. Our CVA last year of 1015, put us fourth equal in the county behind Millom school, (1020) QES (1016) and UCC (1015.5). This year we estimate the CVA to be 1022, which is fabulous. CVA is a better and fairer measure of school effectiveness than raw results alone; allowing meaningful comparisons to be made between schools with different intakes, by taking into account prior attainment, the biggest single predictor of pupil results. This measure compares the grades pupils are expected to achieve, based on their KS2 SATs, with what they actually achieve in their Yr 11 exams. Outcomes above 1000 represent schools where pupils on average made more progress than pupils nationally, while measures below 1000 represent schools where pupils made less progress.

    Millom School Termly Newsletter December 2017 A message from Mr Savidge As we come to the end of the autumn term we look back at what has been achieved by the students of Millom School. We started the term with fantastic GCSE results in which 4 out of 5 students achieved at least a grade 4 in English and 3 out of 4 students achieved a grade 4 in maths. 49% of students achieved at least a grade 5 in both English and maths which puts us well above the national average of 39%. Our 6th form students have moved onto a variety of apprenticeships and courses at University. Apprenticeships include Gen2, BAE, Cumbria County Council and Kimberley Clark. University courses include Applied Social Sciences at Sheffield University, Early Years Education at Chester, Creative Writing at University of Gloucestershire. This underlines what we stand for as a school, in setting high academic standards and giving students the best choices for their futures. During this term the students have organised a number of charity fundraising events, this has included Children in Need, Shoebox Appeal, A charity event for Rylan Cosgrove, MacMillan Coffee Morning and Christmas Jumper Day (on the last day of term). The students take the leadership in organising these events and work together on them extremely well. They are an important part of the local community and the wider community. The mock interviews and careers fair were held on the same day this term. This gave students the experience of going through a job interview followed by the opportunity to meet a wide variety of employers and training providers.

For APP City/Employer Insights: If your school has ‘FSM’ in the Social Criteria column, then you must have been eligible for Free School Meals at any point during your secondary schooling. If your school has ‘FSM or FG’ in the Social Criteria column, then you must have been eligible for Free School Meals at any point during your secondary schooling or be among the first generation in your family to attend university.
