Abstract When it aired in Fall 2011 on Fox, Terra Nova was an experiment in creating a cult television program that appealed to a mass audience. This thesis is a case study of that experiment. I conclude that the show failed because of its attempts to maintain the sophistication, complexity and innovative nature of the cult genre while simultaneously employing an overly simplistic narrative structure that resembles that of mass audience programming. Terra Nova was unique in its transmedia approach to marketing and storytelling, its advanced special effects, and its dystopian speculative fiction premise. Terra Nova’s narrative, on the other hand, presented a nostalgically simple moralistic landscape that upheld old-fashioned ideologies and felt oddly retro to the modern SF TV audience. Terra Nova’s failure suggests that a cult show made for this type of broad audience is impossible.

  • Peter Roth Stepping Down As Chairman of Warner Bros. TV
Peter Roth Stepping Down as Chairman of Warner Bros. TV 10.18.2020 Peter Roth, chairman of the Warner Bros. Television Group, will step down from his role in early 2021, said Ann Sarnoff, chair and CEO, WarnerMedia Studios and Networks Group, on Friday. The announcement comes amidst many layoffs and departures at the media giant, which has also seen the departures of Robert Greenblatt, chairman of Warner Media Entertainment and direct to consumer, and Kevin Reilly, chief content officer of HBO Max and president of TNT, TBS and truTV, in early August. In May, Jason Kilar, the founding CEO of Hulu, was named CEO of WarnerMedia and since then, Kilar has been streamlining teams across WarnerMedia and doubling down on new streaming service HBO Max. Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported that thousands of additional layoffs were likely coming to the company. "Peter and I have been meeting for some time about this, and while there's never a great moment to say goodbye, he felt that this was the right time to transition in a new leader for the group," said Sarnoff in a statement. "He's delivered hundreds of shows, thousands of episodes, millions of viewers, with one singular vision - to work with the best people and to make the best television series. In addition to being well respected by his colleagues and competitors, actors, writers, directors and producers, he is the force behind iconic, pop-culture-defining television shows we all know and love, including The West Wing, The Big Bang Theory, Gilmore Girls, Two And A Half Men, Gossip Girl, Supernatural, The Flash and countless others.

As I sat watching the wedding of Kevin and Scotty on Brothers & Sisters, I was moved by the grav- ity of the moment. Never before had two leading gay characters wed on a broadcast network. Watching them, I saw myself, a member of the gay community, reflected on television. Just four days after the episode aired, the Califor- nia Supreme Court handed down its decision extending marriage in the state to gay and lesbian couples. Progress is happeningI everywhere we look. As we can see in the country’s current cultural and political shift, that progress doesn’t happen in a vacuum. When lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people are portrayed in a fair, accurate and inclusive manner on televi- sion, hearts and minds are changed. The more accurately the diversity of our community is reflected, the more opportunities there are for understanding and acceptance. In addition to Kevin and Scotty’s wedding, Brothers & Sisters featured Saul, one of the rare images of a gay character over 60. Transgender characters are appearing as regular and recurring characters in honest and nuanced story arcs on Ugly Betty, Dirty Sexy Money and The L Word. Young adult shows like GREEK and South of Nowhere, as well as the daytime drama As the World Turns feature multi-dimensional gay teen characters that go to school, live their lives, date and, yes, kiss. These portrayals make all the difference in making the lives of LGBT people real to TV viewers across the country.

  • Kevin Reilly Headed to Turner (UPDATED)
Kevin Reilly Headed to Turner (UPDATED) 11.04.2014 UPDATED Nov. 4, 2:30 p.m. PT: Turner Broadcasting System president made it official Tuesday with a memo to staff. Reilly is named president of TNT and TBS and chief creative officer for Turner Entertainment. He will also head up a newly created Turner Entertainment Programming Council, uniting the top programming execs at TNT, TBS, Adult Swim and truTV to develop cross-platform offerings. He will start sometime this fall. Levy's full memo is below. He succeeds Michael Wright, but with a broader portfolio that includes marketing and brand creative services in addition to content development, business affairs, production and programming. Reilly's arrival comes as Turner's parent company Time Warner is shedding jobs left and right across all of its divisions. Turner was also forced to take a costly $400 million write-down due to costly programming deals. But Time Warner and Turner execs sounded an optimistic note about the cable channels' future during an investor call this quarter, and both have seen programming pivots pay off in recent years. TNT is aiming for more prestige dramas and genre offerings, while TBS has built a collection of successful off-net syndicated properties and light night offerings. Reilly's Turner gig is the latest in a resume that includes the nine-year stint as entertainment president at Fox, and then an earlier three-year run with the same title at NBC. He also worked at FX and Brad Grey Television. Read More at The Hollywood Reporter, Variety Brief Take: Reilly's move signals that broadcast vets see cable as an exciting place to make television in today's landscape.
