Whether you attend a vocational or trade school, college or university, or take online courses toward a certification or degree, paying for higher education is a requirement. Here are some definitions that will help you understand more about paying for higher education. Please also talk to your guidance counselor, who can give you much more information about the many options available after you earn your high school diploma.

Tuition is the bill you receive for taking classes at a college or university. Tuition is separate from the other costs of attending college, such as paying for room and board, books, facility fees, and TUITION transportation.

A grant is a monetary gift, most often based on personal financial need. A grant does not need to be GRANT repaid.

A loan is money borrowed and repaid in a given amount of time, with or without interest depending LOAN on the legal agreement.

The FAFSA form is completed each year to qualify for funding and is based on financial need. This “Free Application for Federal Student Aid” (FAFSA) form is available through the Federal Student Aid FAFSA program of the U.S. Department of Education (https://fafsa.ed.gov/).

A scholarship is a competitive financial award which does not need to be repaid. Private scholarships SCHOLARSHIP are granted by private parties, such as churches, banks, businesses, and organizations.

Work Study is paid employment on or off campus at institute-approved locations. These jobs are WORK STUDY most often based on financial need.

INTERNSHIP An internship is a temporary position that emphasizes on-the-job training; it can be paid or unpaid.

COOPERATIVE A Cooperative Education (often called a “co-op”) is a type of paid internship that offers academic EDUCATION credit for a structured work experience in your chosen field of study.
