Performer Bios – April Jazz Pianists at the Betsy Hotel for Jazz Appreciation Month 2021 MIAMI BEACH – (For Immediate Release) The Betsy Hotel (thebetsyhotel.com) announces a stellar line up for Jazz Appreciation Month, featuring Miami-based pianists: Jim Gasior, Tal Cohen, Wilkie Ferguson, David Attelan, and Ryan Ellis. Pianist/Composer Marc Irwin (based in NYC and Baltimore) is The Hotel’s visiting jazz artist for 2021. The Betsy’s Jazz program is the longest continually running series of its kind in the region, featuring live performances 9 times a week – from 6 to 11 PM nightly, and from 11 AM to 4 PM on weekends during brunch at LT Steak and Seafood. All performances are in the Lobby of The Betsy Hotel located at 1440 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach. https://www.thebetsyhotel.com/calendar Jazz Appreciation Month (fondly known as "JAM") was created in 2001 at the Smithsonian to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz for the entire month of April. The Betsy’s Jazz program connects to a rich legacy that links South Florida to the National historic Jazz circuit which brought musicians who played in both Harlems (the one in NY and the one in Overtown a.k.a. The Harlem of the South), as they made their way from club to club – across the USA. Back in the day in Overtown and on Miami Beach, stars like Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, McCoy Tyner, and Josephine Baker performed the same jazz standards that will be performed live at The Betsy Hotel during Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) 2021. The Betsy’s jazz schedule for April 2021 is listed below. Pianists will perform at the Steinway in The Betsy Hotel lobby. Jim holds a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Music and Jazz Performance and a Master’s degree in Jazz Pedagogy – both from University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, where he is in the final stages of his Doctorate in Jazz. Allen C. PAUL’s early years were filled with discoveries of jazz, blues, funk, gospel – all kinds of musical puzzle pieces that would begin to weave their way into his playing. He capped off this start by winning the Florida State Music Teachers Association Concerto Competition at age 17 and performing with the Tampa Bay Symphony. A graduate of the University of Miami School of Music in Jazz Piano, he currently performs, writes, and teaches privately in South Florida – and is both a sought-after soloist and side man for the best and brightest jazz musicians in the region. Tal COHEN is a Grammy Award winning jazz pianist currently located in Miami, whose unique style owes its roots to the Jewish folk songs and classical music he played in his formative years growing up in Israel. He has received much acclaim, winning the Barry Harris National Piano Competition as well as the prestigious Freedman Fellowship, which saw him perform to a sold-out crowd at the Sydney Opera House. Recently, Tal Cohen has been playing around the globe with Terence Blanchard, Greg Osby, Ignacio Berroa, Joe Lovano, and others. He currently leads his own ensemble which has performed at iconic jazz festivals and venues, including the Jazzbez Jazz Festival (Ukraine), Detroit Jazz Festival, Melbourne Jazz Festival (Australia), and a three-week residency at the Black Cat (San Francisco). His most recent album, Gentle Giants, has received international critical acclaim and earned him many positive reviews including a 4- star review from the historic Downbeat magazine. Wilkie FERGUSON is a native of Miami and a graduate of New World School of the Arts. He studied music and mathematics at Morehouse College and majored in classical piano performance at the Eastman School of Music. Wilkie’s first job out of college was with the faculty of the Boys’ Choir of Harlem as assistant director, piano accompanist, and music theory instructor. As a performer, he was a part of the original Broadway casts of the Tony Award winning The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, Motown: the Musical, and Wonderland and has toured with In the Heights, Hairspray, and Dreamgirls. Off-Broadway and regional shows include Cotton Club Parade at City Center and the world premieres of Sister Act and Ray Charles Live at Pasadena Playhouse. As a composer-arranger, some of his work can be heard in Parrotheads, currently the #1 ranked documentary on iTunes; Congo Cabaret by Shoga Films; and his original musical, Take On Me, featuring big band arrangements of 80s pop hits. Ryan ELLIS received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Miami in 2000. As a professional jazz pianist, Ellis has worked extensively in the Caribbean, Florida, and Hawaii performing pop and jazz with many great musicians, most notably Eddie Jones, Bobby Dukoff, Paul Brown, Leon Foster Thomas, Bobby Ramirez, and Ira Sullivan. Ellis received his Master’s Degree in Music from Florida International University on a fellowship from the Johnny Mercer Foundation. David ATTELAN is an award-winning pianist and composer who has composed, arranged, and produced music for films, TV shows, fashion shows, brands, and artists (hip hop, pop, electro) and produced dance-floor remixes. Among the famous brands, film directors, productions, and TV channels that have trusted him and continue to collaborate with him are Renault, L'Oréal, La Fnac, EMI, Sony BMG, Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache (Tellement Proches), Alexandre Arcady (Mariage Mixte), Diane Kurys (L'Anniversaire) Stéphane Guenin (L'Engagement - Killing Uncle Roman), Philippe Poulard (Warcraft), TF1, France TV, M6, W9, MTV, ARTE, etc. A passionate artist with an entrepreneurial spirit, he has created a record label and a publishing company in Paris and has produced, composed, or arranged for musicals such as Le Sel et le Miel, Fiddler on The Roof, Piaf, Grease, and Salt & Honey, and has been for over 10 years the conductor and musical director of the dance and song company ADAMA, with whom he performed throughout Europe. Marc IRWIN is a pianist, composer, arranger, and recording artist, using his diverse talents as a musician within the fields of contemporary, jazz, classical, theater, and world music. He plays often with his own signature quartet comprised of some of the busiest and most sought-after musicians in the industry and has spent decades in the New York theatre and cabaret scene as performer, accompanist, and musical director. Marc earned his doctorate in Music Composition and Theory from The Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University. This is Marc’s fifth annual jazz piano performing arts residency at The Betsy Hotel. • Lee Morgan Chronology 1956–1972 by Jeffery S
Delightfulee Jeffrey S. McMillan University of Michigan Press Lee Morgan Chronology 1956–1972 By Jeffery S. McMillan This is an annotated listing of all known Lee Morgan performances and all recordings (studio, live performances, broadcasts, telecasts, and interviews). The titles of studio recordings are given in bold and preceded by the name of the session leader. Recordings that appear to be lost are prefaced with a single asterisk in parentheses: (*). Recordings that have been commercially issued have two asterisks: **. Recordings that exist on tape but have never been commercially released have two asterisks in parentheses: (**). Any video footage known to survive is prefaced with three asterisks: ***. Video footage that was recorded but appears to now be lost is prefaced with three asterisks in parentheses: (***). On numerous occasions at Slugs’ Saloon in Manhattan, recording devices were set up on the stage and recorded Morgan’s performances without objection from the trumpeter. So far, none of these recordings have come to light. The information herein is a collation of data from newspapers, periodicals, published and personal interviews, discographies, programs, pamphlets, and other chronologies of other artists. Morgan’s performances were rarely advertised in most mainstream papers, so I drew valuable information primarily from African-American newspapers and jazz periodicals, which regularly carried ads for nightclubs and concerts. Entertainment and nightlife columnists in the black press, such as “Woody” McBride, Masco Young, Roland Marsh, Jesse Walker, Art Peters, and Del Shields, provided critical information, often verifying the personnel of an engagement or whether an advertised appearance occurred or was cancelled. Newspapers that I used include the Baltimore Afro-American (BAA), Cleveland Call & Post (C&P), Chicago Defender (CD), New Jersey Afro-American (NJAA), New York Amsterdam News (NYAN), Philadelphia Tribune (PT), and Pittsburgh Courier (PC).

BIBLIOGRAPHY OF DISCOGRAPHIES ANNUAL CUMULATION --- 1972 Edited by Michael Gray and Gerald Gibson INTRODUCTION For some time now virtually every user of disco graphies regardless of subject has agreed upon the need for a comprehensive bibliography of discographies. It was generally conceded, however, that the difficulty of attempting such a diversified bibliographic project was so great that it would be impossible for one or two people to tackle. A~er.due consideration and some pre liminary work (a number of you are probably aware of inquiries made by the editors of this bibliography in the periodical literature covering the field of sound recordings), we proceeded to contact several persons with strong discographic reputations in their respective subject fields to ask if they would be interested in working with us to produce a comprehensive bibliography of discographies to be published annually in the ARSC Journal. In each instance we met with overwhelming enthusiasm and, as the following bibliography will attest, we have received marvelous cooperation. The contributors and their subject areas are: Country and Hillbilly--Norm Cohen, Fla.ya del Ray, California; Folk-Ethnic--Joe Hickerson, Washington, D.C. (because of his pressing schedule at this point, Joe has been unable to include his discographies in this issue); Blues-Gospel--David Evans, Anaheim, Cali fornia; Spoken Documentary Recordings--Gary Shivers, Lawrence, Kansas; Jazz--Daniel Allen, Toronto, Canada; and Classical--Michael Gray and Gerald Gibson, Washing ton, D.C. As you can see, the area of Popular-Soul has not been covered in this bibliography; it is hoped that this oversight will be rectified in the near future.

  • Farewell to the Jazz Preacher
gram JAZZ PROMOTING AND NURTURING JAZZ IN CHICAGO OCTOBER 2020 WWW.JAZZINCHICAGO.ORG FAREWELL TO THE JAZZ PREACHER BY LLOYD SACHS Chicago's jazz community is so tight, the loss of any of its members is keenly felt. But such was the special largesse of Ira Sullivan – in musical, interpersonal and spiritual terms – news of his recent death had an especially strong impact on the artistic associates, students, fans and critics he left behind. Though Sullivan had lived for decades in Florida, where he lifted the jazz scene with his bandstand presence and inspired generations of students as an instructor at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, he never stopped being present in the hearts and souls of Chicago's finest. Few artists have worn the Windy City jazz tradition with greater meaning or class than Sullivan did with his matter of fact brilliance, personal approach to classic bebop and utter redefining of versatility. He was probably best known as a saxophonist – he played tenor, soprano, alto and baritone – but he was also a great trumpeter and stalwart on the flute. Whatever instrument he picked up he played with resounding personal depth. In paying tribute to Sullivan, musician after musician recounted the glories of hanging out with him as well as playing with him – of learning things from him that they had no idea they didn't know. For one of those players, the late saxophone hero Lin Halliday, that included learning how to get his horn psychically fixed. At the Green Mill one night, as a member of trumpeter Brad Goode's band, Halliday was Ira Sullivan (1931-2020) photo by Lauren Deutsch having trouble with the keys on his tenor.

  • How Sonny Defeated the Dragon in His Six-Decade Career, Legendary Saxophonist Sonny Rollins Has Claimed Many a Triumph
How Sonny Defeated the Dragon In his six-decade career, legendary saxophonist Sonny Rollins has claimed many a triumph. But his greatest may have come during a quiet period in Chicago By Neil Tesser (Chicago Reader) A decade ago, on September 9, 1998, the YMCA building at 3763 S. Wabash became an official Chicago landmark. Completed in 1913, it gained an annex in 1945, and today it remains a hub of neighborhood activity. Stately on its quiet and well-kept Bronzeville block, it bears a plaque describing it as “an important center of community life” that offered housing and job training for “new arrivals from the South during the ‘Great Migration’ of African-Americans in the first decades of the 20th century.” In a perfect world, there would be a second plaque below it: “Sonny Rollins slept here.” Another such plaque might adorn the considerably less well-kept Central Arms Hotel at 520 E. 47th, just east of Vincennes. Still another could mark an empty lot on the 300 block of East Garfield, where the Rhumboogie Club once stood, but it wouldn’t say anything about sleeping: Rollins played at the Rhumboogie with the man who would become Sun Ra, and nobody slept with Sun Ra around. In 1955 Rollins was already a veteran of studio groups led by Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, and he would soon be acclaimed as the outstanding tenor saxophone voice of his generation. But for most of that year he lived in obscurity on Chicago’s south side, working menial jobs and barely gigging.
