This article is extremely relevant to the consideration of apocalyptic topics that take place within the framework of local environmental problems and man-made disasters, and in this case the word “Ecology” is interpreted broadly. Apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic cinema is directly related to environmental difficulties, and environmental and man-made disasters – which cause the collapse of an entire ecosystem, the human race, or a huge part of it – are one 93 of the most common scenarios in such movies. The most serious threat to all of humanity and the modern world is the reality of global environmental problems. Kazakhstan, like other countries, is experiencing a severe environmental crisis, and the issues of their solution are embedded in the global situation. This research is based on the materials of the national cinematographic art of the Republic of Kazakhstan, America, the USSR, and European and Asian countries, including early cinema as well as the modern periods of development. The methodological basis of the article consists of theoretical, visual, film and comparative analysis. Many regions of Central Asia, especially Kazakhstan, remain environmentally unstable, but to date, these issues have not become important topics of Kazakh cinema.     0 THE KAZAKH NEW WAVE: OVERCOMING SOCIALIST REALISM IN THE AGE OF NEW WAVES Danel Akhmetova HST499 – History Capstone May 5, 2020 1 Introduction In 1988, Murat Auezov, the editor-in-chief at Kazakhfilm national film studio proposed its structural reformation.1 From now on, the studio was to be divided into two creative associations, Miras (“heritage”) and Alem (“world”, “universe”), that in the next few years would become home to a number of key films of the decade, later collectively known as the Kazakh New Wave.2 The former division devoted its attention to the questions of Kazakh national culture through historical, ethnographic, and folkloric films, while the latter demonstrated strong commitment to their official motto of “knowledge of the world in its motion” and encouraged production of films of modern, cosmopolitan, and all-round character.3 Even though the Alem and Miras associations had gradually disappeared, the emergence of these divisions at Kazakhfilm in the second half of the 1980s reveals a lasting dilemma about priorities in the Kazakh cinema industry.4 What themes should the Kazakh filmmakers tackle – national or universal ones? The Kazakh New Wave films that were made at those two studios were neither entirely national nor completely cosmopolitan. Murat Auezov understood the impossibility of resolving this dilemma by the emerging directors of the Kazakh New Wave. He believed that the most essential prerequisite for the success of contemporary local filmmaking was a combination of both national and transnational factors.

Applying comparative and contrastive analysis, the authors of this article distinguish major artistic mainstreams in the field of children cinema and films dedicated to children and juveniles in the period from 1991 to 2013. Introduction Children cinema as well as images of children and teenagers in feature films have always been of particular interest to directors. Kazakh cinema is no exception. Kazakh children feature film industry has been insufficiently studied, despite the fact it is characterized by own distinctive development trends. The conventional children feature film model as such saw its peak of development in the 1960s and 1970s and was particularly expressive in the works by film directors A.Karsakbaev (“My Name is Kozha,” 1963), Sh.Beisembaev (“Arman Ataman,” 1967), K.Kasymbekov (“Shok and Sher,” 1972).
