EXTERNAL VALIDATION OF Quadfest (Page 6) NBSC CROMER CAMPUS

SW public schools are committed to the pursuit of excellence and the Nprovision of high quality educational opportunities for each and every child. Our schools vision statement is “Students at Cromer Debating at Cromer (Page 9) By JUSTIN HONG Campus will be successful today and prepared for Principal tomorrow. We are committed to providing excellence NBSC Cromer Campus in teaching and learning that fosters resilient, passionate and accomplished lifelong learners.”

The School Excellence Framework (“SEF”) supports all NSW public schools in their pursuit of excellence by providing a clear description of the key elements of quality practice across the three domains of learning, teaching and leading. On the 28/08/2018 our school will participate in external validation which involves the school preparing a submission that describes the schools current position in relation to the School Excellence Framework. An external panel will visit the school to validate this submission. The Big Dig (Page 10)

This process has been a great opportunity for the school to reflect on the many areas of progress the school has made in recent years. As you will often hear me say. I am extremely proud of the achievements of our students and staff, and of the incredible support the school receives from its community. Below is an excerpt from the executive summary of this year’s external validation process.

“The self assessment process in 2018 involved staff, students and parents. Feedback was sought through a process of small team discussions around each domain of the SEF. PLUS.. Based on these discussions judgements were made by each group and these judgements Band Workshops (Page 8) were averaged and used to complete the online survey. Integrated Studies (Page 9) New Cyclist Laws (Page 12) and more.....

NORTHERN BEACHES SECONDARY COLLEGE Principal’s report continued...

In preparing for external validation most members of the executive team were allocated an area of responsibility that aligned with their daily work and an element of the SEF. Evidence samples were derived from existing workflows and were annotated and uploaded to justify earlier judgements. Through executive team meetings evidence samples were shared and discussed.

There has been significant staff turnover in recent years beginning in 2015 with the appointment of a new Principal, two new Deputy Princi- pals and three new Head Teachers.

In 2015 a predominately new executive engaged in a process of community consultation and data analysis and were able to complete a new 2015-2017 strategic school plan. This transformative plan has led to an improved culture shift within the school, outstanding growth results in NAPLAN and renewed curricula and extra-curricula programs. As a result in 2018 an upward trend in enrolments has been established and the school now enjoys increasing levels of community support.” NBSC CROMER CAMPUS 2018 GOLF DAY

It is close to that time again when we are busy putting this year’s Golf day together. The date has been locked in as 13 November 2018 at the magnificent Cromer Golf course. We remind you to please put this in your diary. Last year there were a lot of disappointed people as they left it too late to put their entries in. Get in early as numbers are limited. Bookings will be as per last year through Flexi-schools and bookings will open at the end of September 2018.

Last year the day raised money to purchase new outdoor furniture for the school. To see the progress on this project please look on the P & C website, where we have posted pictures of the fantastic new furniture installed. Last year we had the second most successful golf day and we would love to exceed that result this year.

The day is founded on sponsorship, which we rely on both to make the day enjoyable and the fundraising a success. During the dinner last year there were a number of people who approached me to ask if they could get involved this year and as we are now in the process of putting this all together, we would like to invite you to get involved. We have various packages of sponsorships available, the options range from being the main sponsor for the day to per hole packages. To get involved, please contact Desmond by email on [email protected].

After the game we have a dinner along with the opportunity to win raffle prizes. For this to be successful we need donations. If you would like to donate prizes such as bottles of wine, box of chocolates, etc, please hand these in at the school canteen.

Look out for our next update.

Kind regards

Desmond McLachlan P&C President

2 Cromer Courier Term Three VIETNAM WAR MEMORIAL SERVICE

n the 17th of August, Marcus Moran and I were given the opportunity to make a Ospeech at the Vietnam War Memorial. We were also given the chance to hear a fantastic story of a young woman who was able to escape the Vietnam War and how she was able to survive the journey to . Along with hearing this story we were able to watch the tribute to those who had fallen. After the Memorial we were able to talk to multiple veterans along with the Mayor during afternoon tea. It was a brilliant Memorial Service that allowed us to remember and pay our respects to all those who had fallen. Marcus and I were both very grateful to have been given the opportunity to see the Memorial Service and to give a speech.

ongratulations to our Year 7 debating team who faced off against High School on Friday th6 July, 2018. After months of giving up their free time to after school and lunchtime workshops, the team Ccomprising of Orlando Lee, Charlotte Mace, Natalia Heinrich and Madison Maloy gave it their all to argue ‘single sex schools should not be banned’. In a heated back and forth competition, our team was victorious. This is an excellent achievement and an absolute feather in the cap of each of these students. Well done!! he Big Dig 2018 was a great success! Our Year 7s didn’t Thesitate to jump in and get their hands dirty as they speculated what could be buried beneath the soil. Before they could begin, the students had to hypothesise what they expected to uncover during the archaeological dig. During the three days of hard work there were lots of surprises as students revealed bones and artefacts scattered around in what they discovered to be an ancient human sacrifice.

“I found that the students’ curiosity was infectious and everyone got involved trying to piece together what was laid below us” – Student Teacher.

The HSIE faculty is already looking forward to next year’s dig after witnessing the engagement and enthusiasm displayed by the Year 7s while applying their history skills.

SYDNEY JEWISH MUSEUM

n Term 2, Year 10 students travelled to the Jewish Museum to learn more about the Iexperiences of the men, women and children who lived in Nazi occupied parts of Europe during WWII. The students were able to hear testimony from a Hungarian Holocaust survivor who shared her experiences as a young girl. She went into hiding with her family to avoid Nazi occupation. They were also able to visit exhibits showing artefacts, including the belongings of the Nazi’s victims, and were taken on an informative guided tour. Finally, they paid their respects at the various memorials to those who perished.

The Year 10 students are to be congratulated for their maturity and the way in which they represented the school on the day.

School travel update Application information - June 2017

Information for parents, guardians and students Our school has partnered with Transport for NSW to use the new online School Portal for endorsing school travel applications.

You are now able to manage all your school travel needs online including applying for school travel passes and tracking the status of your application.

The application process has also been simplified so that a new or updated application for school travel passes is only needed when a student is:  applying for a school travel pass for the first time  requesting an additional pass as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody).  changing school or campus  changing home address  receiving an expiry notification  repeating a school year  changing their name  requesting a new transport operator.

This means students who are progressing to year 3 and year 7 only need to reapply if they are changing circumstances.

Students who are not residents and are temporarily in Australia can also provide their visa subclass number and exchange program (if prompted) when applying online, making the application and approval process much faster.

Parents, guardians and students can apply or update their details online at:

www.transportnsw.info/school-students

If you do not have access to the internet contact 131 500 for assistance.

Compulsory School Attendance

Information for parents

Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.
