Our schools vision statement is “Students at Cromer Debating at Cromer (Page 9) By JUSTIN HONG Campus will be successful today and prepared for Principal tomorrow. We are committed to providing excellence NBSC Cromer Campus in teaching and learning that fosters resilient, passionate and accomplished lifelong learners.” The School Excellence Framework (“SEF”) supports all NSW public schools in their pursuit of excellence by providing a clear description of the key elements of quality practice across the three domains of learning, teaching and leading. On the 28/08/2018 our school will participate in external validation which involves the school preparing a submission that describes the schools current position in relation to the School Excellence Framework. An external panel will visit the school to validate this submission. The Big Dig (Page 10) This process has been a great opportunity for the school to reflect on the many areas of progress the school has made in recent years. As you will often hear me say. I am extremely proud of the achievements of our students and staff, and of the incredible support the school receives from its community. Below is an excerpt from the executive summary of this year’s external validation process. “The self assessment process in 2018 involved staff, students and parents. Feedback was sought through a process of small team discussions around each domain of the SEF. PLUS.. Based on these discussions judgements were made by each group and these judgements Band Workshops (Page 8) were averaged and used to complete the online survey. Integrated Studies (Page 9) New Cyclist Laws (Page 12) and more..... NORTHERN BEACHES SECONDARY COLLEGE Principal’s report continued... In preparing for external validation most members of the executive team were allocated an area of responsibility that aligned with their daily work and an element of the SEF. Evidence samples were derived from existing workflows and were annotated and uploaded to justify earlier judgements. Through executive team meetings evidence samples were shared and discussed. There has been significant staff turnover in recent years beginning in 2015 with the appointment of a new Principal, two new Deputy Princi- pals and three new Head Teachers. In 2015 a predominately new executive engaged in a process of community consultation and data analysis and were able to complete a new 2015-2017 strategic school plan. This transformative plan has led to an improved culture shift within the school, outstanding growth results in NAPLAN and renewed curricula and extra-curricula programs. As a result in 2018 an upward trend in enrolments has been established and the school now enjoys increasing levels of community support.” NBSC CROMER CAMPUS 2018 GOLF DAY It is close to that time again when we are busy putting this year’s Golf day together. The date has been locked in as 13 November 2018 at the magnificent Cromer Golf course. We remind you to please put this in your diary. Last year there were a lot of disappointed people as they left it too late to put their entries in. Get in early as numbers are limited. Bookings will be as per last year through Flexi-schools and bookings will open at the end of September 2018. Last year the day raised money to purchase new outdoor furniture for the school. To see the progress on this project please look on the P & C website, where we have posted pictures of the fantastic new furniture installed. Last year we had the second most successful golf day and we would love to exceed that result this year. The day is founded on sponsorship, which we rely on both to make the day enjoyable and the fundraising a success. During the dinner last year there were a number of people who approached me to ask if they could get involved this year and as we are now in the process of putting this all together, we would like to invite you to get involved. We have various packages of sponsorships available, the options range from being the main sponsor for the day to per hole packages. To get involved, please contact Desmond by email on [email protected]. After the game we have a dinner along with the opportunity to win raffle prizes. For this to be successful we need donations. If you would like to donate prizes such as bottles of wine, box of chocolates, etc, please hand these in at the school canteen. Look out for our next update. Kind regards Desmond McLachlan P&C President 2 Cromer Courier Term Three VIETNAM WAR MEMORIAL SERVICE n the 17th of August, Marcus Moran and I were given the opportunity to make a Ospeech at the Vietnam War Memorial. We were also given the chance to hear a fantastic story of a young woman who was able to escape the Vietnam War and how she was able to survive the journey to Australia. Along with hearing this story we were able to watch the tribute to those who had fallen. After the Memorial we were able to talk to multiple veterans along with the Mayor during afternoon tea. It was a brilliant Memorial Service that allowed us to remember and pay our respects to all those who had fallen. Marcus and I were both very grateful to have been given the opportunity to see the Memorial Service and to give a speech. • Deputy Principal Matters by Nathalie Bodley
Term 1 Week 8 20 March 2020 Deputy Principal Matters by Nathalie Bodley This week the SIHS school community have all been doing our best to ensure that staff and stu- dents are following all the measures recommended by NSW Health and teachers have noticed that more and more students are self-isolating and working from home. As a result of this and the possibility of closure, teachers have been preparing resources and online learning platforms so that lessons and productive learning can continue from home. On Thursday, we reorganised our timetable to accommodate staggered recess and lunch breaks so as to maintain safer social dis- tancing expectations. Also, a decision to not proceed with NAPLAN in 2020 has been taken, by the Department of Edu- cation to assist school leaders, teachers and support staff to focus on the wellbeing of students and continuity of education, including potential online and remote learning. Below are the proposed plans should we go to online learning: What would a normal day look like for a student in the case of a temporary school closure? Please note that this is a guide and depending on the instructions from the Department of Education there may be changes to this draft plan. 1. Students should follow their normal timetable. Routine will be very important during this time. 2. Students should log into Google Classroom at the beginning of each scheduled lesson to receive instructions for the lesson. If students do not have a Google Classroom code, they should email their teacher. 3. Unless unwell, teachers will be available to assist students during the timetabled lesson.

The day focused on literacy and numeracy and refining all teaching programs to further incorporate strategies to enhance learning. Anzac Day Dawn Service Our school was represented at a wonderful Anzac Day Dawn Service organised by The Manly Warringah Remembrance Trust at Manly Dam where a wreath was laid on behalf of the Mackellar community and a Mackellar student delivered the keynote speech. I commend this very special service to all families to attend next year as a truly wonderful experience. Our students also did outstanding jobs and played a major part in the Anzac Day ceremony at school. Our students carried out their roles with confidence, respect and solemnity, and brought great credit to themselves and our school. The Zonta Club of the Northern Beaches donated a collection of books to be laid as a living wreath during our Anzac Day Service at school. We are greatly appreciative of this. NAPLAN The national testing of literacy and numeracy of all students in Years 7 and 9 occurs over the next two weeks.

This is very exciting news for the school. It is expected that the project will begin by the end of Term 2. The old toilet block in D block will also be refurbished next term through special state funding. Parent-Teacher Evenings These evenings scheduled for March - May 2021 will be postponed. Due to Covid restrictions particularly related to physical distancing of adults and visitors into the school, we cannot conduct these event at this time. If you would like to ring you daughter’s teachers to have a phone meeting to gain a progress report, you are most welcome. You would need to know your daughter’s classes and her teachers to be able to be directed to speak with them. I suggest calling before school or at lunchtime or immediately after school to maximise your chance of connecting with the teachers. School Visitors As a school we have a duty of care of our students. As such, all visitors to the school must firstly go the office, and if their visit is appropriate beyond the foyer area, sign in as a visitor and be given a visitor’s badge to wear for the duration of their stay in the school.

An overview of Stile, Australia’s #1 science resource provider EXECUTIVE SUMMARY FOR SCHOOL LEADERS Stile | Executive summary for school leaders 2 Table of contents Welcome letter 3 How we are rethinking science education > Our principles 5 > Our pedagogy 7 > Our approach 9 A simple solution > Stile Classroom 12 > Squiz 14 > Professional learning 15 > Stile Concierge 16 Key benefits 17 The Stile community of schools 19 The rest is easy 24 Stile | Executive summary for school leaders 3 It’s time to rethink science at school I’m continuously awestruck by the sheer power of science. In a mere 500 years, a tiny fraction of humanity’s long history, science – and the technological advances that have stemmed from it – has completely transformed every part of our lives. The scale of humanity’s scientific transformation in such a short period is so immense it’s hard to grasp. My grandmother was alive when one of the world’s oldest airlines, Qantas, was born. In her lifetime, flight has become as routine as daily roll call. Disease, famine and the toll of manual labour that once ravaged the world’s population have also been dramatically reduced. Science is at the heart of this progress. Given such incredible advancement, it’s tempting to think that science education must be in pretty good shape. Sadly, it isn’t. We could talk about falling PISA rankings, or declining STEM enrolments. But instead, and perhaps more importantly, let’s consider the world to which our students will graduate. A world of “fake news” and “alternative facts”.
