School of Education University of and Early Childhood Studies Western Sydney © Charles Kivunja March 2006 Charles Kivunja ii Charles Kivunja iii DEDICATION This thesis is dedicated firstly, to my wife Georgia, for her love and assuming the responsibility for the daily pressures of the family so that I could concentrate on this project uninterrupted. Her patience and understanding as the wife of a teacher-student over the last thirty four years have been a source of encouragement to my academic pursuits. Secondly, it is dedicated to my daughters, Caroline and Diana, for their love and understanding of my addiction to the completion of this thesis. Among them is my kind friend and colleague, John Pellicano, who proof-read drafts of this thesis during its development. • An Overview of Stile, Australia's #1 Science Resource Provider
An overview of Stile, Australia’s #1 science resource provider EXECUTIVE SUMMARY FOR SCHOOL LEADERS Stile | Executive summary for school leaders 2 Table of contents Welcome letter 3 How we are rethinking science education > Our principles 5 > Our pedagogy 7 > Our approach 9 A simple solution > Stile Classroom 12 > Squiz 14 > Professional learning 15 > Stile Concierge 16 Key benefits 17 The Stile community of schools 19 The rest is easy 24 Stile | Executive summary for school leaders 3 It’s time to rethink science at school I’m continuously awestruck by the sheer power of science. In a mere 500 years, a tiny fraction of humanity’s long history, science – and the technological advances that have stemmed from it – has completely transformed every part of our lives. The scale of humanity’s scientific transformation in such a short period is so immense it’s hard to grasp. My grandmother was alive when one of the world’s oldest airlines, Qantas, was born. In her lifetime, flight has become as routine as daily roll call. Disease, famine and the toll of manual labour that once ravaged the world’s population have also been dramatically reduced. Science is at the heart of this progress. Given such incredible advancement, it’s tempting to think that science education must be in pretty good shape. Sadly, it isn’t. We could talk about falling PISA rankings, or declining STEM enrolments. But instead, and perhaps more importantly, let’s consider the world to which our students will graduate. A world of “fake news” and “alternative facts”.

  • Building Teacher Resilience
Building teacher resilience Jo Earp Teacher Magazine Building teacher resilience Jo Earp - Teacher Magazine - 12 October 2016 https://www.teachermagazine.com.au/articles/building-teacher-resilience Last month, we brought you news of an Australian research study suggesting that resilience could be the key to understanding why teachers choose to quit the profession. As a follow-up, we find out how Northern Beaches Secondary College in New South Wales is supporting its staff in the areas of resilience and wellbeing. Renata Grudic – College Head Teacher, Teaching and Learning – spoke about the school’s approach at this year’s Excellence in Professional Practice Conference. In the first of a two-part Q&A, she tells Teacher Editor Jo Earp what prompted the focus on teacher welfare and how the school is delivering evidence-based professional development. Northern Beaches Secondary College (NBSC) is a professional learning. That’s usually held on the first large government school in Sydney. Can you tell us day of Term 2. Managing and organising the event is a a bit about the school and your role? key role of my position. Two years ago the whole day focused on resilience and wellbeing, [where] I organised NBSC has five campuses: Balgowlah Boys Campus (Years approximately 30 psychologists and practitioners 7-12), Cromer Campus (Comprehensive, Years 7-12), to deliver workshops that were aligned to positive Mackellar Girls Campus (Years 7-12), Freshwater Senior psychology. Last year the focus was on developing Campus (co-educational, Years 11-12) and Manly Campus a common language that supports solution-focused (selective, Years 7-12).
