FLYERS VS. OILERS

This is the second and final meeting between the teams this season.

SEASON RECAP Thursday, December 8, 2016 - Flyers 6, Edmonton 5 at Wells Fargo Center: Michael Raffl scored with 1:29 remaining to give the Flyers a win unlike any other in their history, as they came from two goals down twice to defeat the Oilers – the first time they’ve won a game under those circumstances. Edmonton took a two-goal lead on goals by Leon Draisaitl 4:39 into the game and Connor McDavid 4:35 into the second period (PP). The Flyers flipped the score by tallying three times in 72 seconds – Mark Streit started the remarkable run with 7:29 left in the second, followed by Pierre-Edouard Bellemare 53 seconds later and Claude Giroux 19 seconds after that. The Oilers tied it back up on a shorthanded goal by Andrej Sekera with 3:45 left in the second, and restored the two-goal advantage with goals from Benoit Pouliot 3:07 into the third period and Oscar Klefbom on a power play 5:12 into the final frame. Jake Voracek started the second comeback 1:19 later with a power play tally, and Giroux tied the contest with his second of the night with 7:49 remaining. That set the stage for Raffl’s effort just inside the final 90 seconds. Steve Mason made 28 saves in the win, while Jonas Gustavsson absorbed the loss with 25 stops. Stars of the Game: 1 – Claude Giroux; 2 – Jake Voracek; 3 – Jesse Puljujarvi.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

The Flyers have allowed just 11 goals in their last six games (one of which was an ENG) but have scored just seven goals themselves in that timeframe. Since February 1, the Flyers have scored an average of one goal every 24.4 shots. That is the largest number of shots per goal in the league in that timeframe; second largest is Edmonton, which has scored a goal every 21.7 shots on average.

The Flyers are outshooting their opponent by an average of 5.67 shots per game since February 1, which is tied for the fifth best shot differential in that timeframe. The 1.83 goals per game they have allowed in that timeframe is tied for third fewest in the league, However, they have scored just 1.17 goals per game in that run, which is the fewest in the league; second fewest is Edmonton at 1.40 goals per game.

Claude Giroux has continued to climb the Flyers record book as he’s played through his ninth season of NHL action, not counting a two-game stint in 2007-08. Giroux has 29 assists on the season, leaving him just 15 away from tying Mark Recchi for fourth-most in team history. He is also approaching the top 12 in games played and top 15 in goals. Tonight’s game is slated to be Giroux’s 347th as team captain. He is within reach of passing Eric Lindros for the third-longest captaincy in team history before the end of the season, which would place him behind only Bob Clarke and Dave Poulin.

Brayden Schenn played his 400th NHL game last Wednesday and is slated to play his 400th as a Flyer tonight, while Matt Read is two games away from the same milestone. Schenn and Read will become the 44th and 45th players in team history to reach the 400 game plateau.

Schenn continues to lead the NHL with 12 power play goals, while Wayne Simmonds scored his 11th on Thursday to move into a four–way tie for second in the league. Schenn has scored nine of the Flyers’ last 13 power play goals dating back to his 3-ppg game vs. Dallas on December 10, while Simmonds has recorded two of the other four.

Simmonds scored three goals in the NHL All-Star Game, including the game-winner in the championship game, to earn All-Star MVP honors. Simmonds became just the second Flyer in All-Star Game history to win the award, and first since Reggie Leach did it in 1980. The honors continued for Simmonds the following Monday when he was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week in recognition of the overall body of work, making him the third Flyer so honored this season.

Steve Mason now ranks third on the Flyers’ all time wins list by a goaltender with 94. Ron Hextall (240) and Bernie Parent (232) are first and second in wins; past that, nobody has more in team history than the 94 that Mason and Wayne Stephenson both have. Mason’s next appearance will put him in sole possession of third place in franchise history in games played.

Ivan Provorov continues to lead the Flyers in average time on ice (TOI) this season, having now climbed to a season average of 21:37, which is second most in the NHL among rookies. He has played more than 20 minutes in 34 of the last 38 contests. The NHL has kept track of TOI since the 1998-99 season, and since that time, the Flyers record-holder among rookies at season’s end is Braydon Coburn in 2006-07, when he played 20:58 per game over 20 games after he was acquired by the Flyers at the 2007 trade deadline.

Hakstol, 47 (7/30/1968), comes to the Flyers from the University of North Dakota, where he served as the head coach of the school’s hockey program for 11 seasons. During that time, Hakstol’s teams posted an overall record of 289-143-43 (.654). The Warburg, Alberta native led UND to the NCAA postseason in each of his 11 seasons, including seven appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four, most of any program in the country during that span. North Dakota won three regular-season conference titles under Hakstol (WCHA 2008-09 and 2010-11; NCHC 2014-15). He also led UND to four WCHA playoff titles (05-06, 09-10, 10-11 and 11-12). 46 of Hakstol’s players at UND played professionally in 2014-15 and 20 played in the NHL, including Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks and Matt Greene of the Los Angeles Kings. UND produced a total of 42 NHL draft picks during Hakstol’s tenure, including eight first-round picks.
