BRAD HOYLMAN NEW YORK STATE SENATOR 27TH DISTRICT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 15, 2017 CONTACT: Noah Gardy – (212) 633-8052 SENATOR HOYLMAN HAILS GOVERNOR CUOMO’S APPOINTMENT OF JUSTICE PAUL FEINMAN AS THE FIRST OPENLY LGBT PERSON TO SERVE ON NEW YORK’S HIGHEST COURT If confirmed, Feinman would be the first openly-LGBT judge to serve on the Court of Appeals Announcement comes two weeks after Hoylman and four other openly-LGBT members of the State Legislature sent a letter to the Governor urging him to appoint an LGBT judge to the court ALBANY – State Senator Brad Hoylman (D, WF-Manhattan), the only openly LGBT member of the New York State Senate and Ranking Member on the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement praising Governor Cuomo’s decision to nominate Justice Paul Feinman to succeed the late Judge Sheila Abdus-Salaam on the New York State Court of Appeals. If confirmed, Feinman would be the first openly- LGBT judge to serve on the Court of Appeals, New York State’s highest court. “Paul Feinman is a judicial nominee of impeccable credentials and unimpeachable character whom I’ve known personally for nearly a quarter of a century. I want to express my deep gratitude to Governor Cuomo for choosing such a historic and inspired candidate and for once again giving New York’s LGBT community something to celebrate at this year’s Pride March. As the Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I look forward to casting my vote in favor of Justice Feinman.” Today’s announcement comes just two weeks after Senator Hoylman and the four other openly gay members of the State Legislature sent a letter to the Governor urging him to make history by appointing an LGBT judge to the Court of Appeals. The NYS Commission on Judicial Vacancies recommended seven candidates to fill the seat, including two openly LGBT judges, the Honorable Paul Feinman and the Honorable Rosalyn Richter. ### .

New York Court of Appeals Adds Two New Judges
June 21, 2021 NEW YORK COURT OF APPEALS ADDS TWO NEW JUDGES To Our Clients and Friends: On June 8, 2021, the New York Senate confirmed the appointment of Anthony Cannataro and Madeline Singas to the seven-member New York Court of Appeals. Judge Cannataro, who was formerly the Administrative Judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York, will fill the vacancy left by Judge Paul Feinman, who recently passed away. Judge Singas, who was formerly the Nassau County District Attorney, will fill the vacancy left by the retiring Judge Leslie Stein.[1] These new judges will leave a lasting mark on the Court of Appeals, which is New York’s court of last resort. Governor Andrew Cuomo has now appointed all seven members of the Court,[2] and because Judges Cannataro and Singas could serve on the Court for a decade or more, they could serve well past the Governor’s time in office.[3] Judge Singas’s confirmation, however, was not unanimous, with opposition coming from Democrats as well as Republicans.[4] Although the replacement of Judges Feinman and Stein marks an important development for the Court and its litigants, it remains to be seen whether, and if so in what ways, the confirmation of these new judges portends a shift in the Court’s jurisprudence. Judge Cannataro Replaces Judge Feinman Judge Cannataro has had a distinguished career in public service, particularly on the bench. After graduating from New York Law School in 1996, he served in the New York City Law Department and then as principal law clerk to Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick on the New York Court of Appeals, and to Lottie Wilkins on the New York Supreme Court.

Seawright Court of Appeals Dear Neighbor, Judge Swearing in On Sunday, I was alarmed to hear that there was a fire near the East 91st Street Waste Transfer Station. Sixty firefighters responded to the ROOSEVELT ISLAND scene to extinguish the fire, and officials from FDNY have confirmed that there was a homeless encampment which set on fire underneath the WTS on the esplanade. It is clear that there needs to be more oversight on the Waste Transfer Station project. I will continue to monitor the Halloween Parade! conditions at the site and hold agencies accountable for any incidents or lack of oversight. I appreciate the FDNY's quick response to my TRANSPORTATION office in dealing with this emergency situation. Queens Midtown Tunnel tube On a more positive note, this week in New York City, we kicked-off magic week. On Wednesday, October 25, I joined the Society of closure American Magicians (S.A.M.) to commemorate Houdini and 100 years since he became President of S.A.M. for a press conference in his childhood home on 79th Street. I hope you will take advantage of the festivities of magic week including a viewing of archival footage and a WEATHER ALERT seance on Halloween, the anniversary of Houdini's death.
