Food banks around the U.S. continue giving away far more canned, packaged and fresh pro- visions than they did before the virus outbreak tossed millions of people out of work, forcing many to seek something to eat for the first time. For those who are now back at work, many are still struggling, paying back rent or trying to re- build savings. “We have all been through an unimaginable year,” said Brian Greene, CEO of the Houston Food Bank, the network’s largest. It was distribut- ing as much as 1 million pounds of groceries dai- ly at various points during the pandemic last year. Data from Feeding America, a national net- work of most food banks in the U.S., shows that its members dispensed far more in the last three months of 2020–about 42% — compared with the same period in 2019. Katie Fitzgerald, Feeding America’s chief op- erating officer, said she expects the food banks will collectively distribute the equivalent of 6 bil- lion meals this year, about the same amount they gave away last year and far above the 4.2 billion meals given out in 2019. “A lot of families who were living paycheck to paycheck before the pandemic were already ex- periencing food insecurity,” she said. “Now, the level of insecurity for some has grown more ex- treme, when you see real hunger — mom skipping meals to feed the family.” The number of free meals districts served to children whose families meet income criteria fell sharply: Nationwide approximately 1.65 billion fewer breakfasts and lunches were served by child food service programs between March and No- vember of 2020 than were served March through November of 2019 — a decrease of 30 percent. By Brandon Guthrie The Conversation The question of when and how to open schools for full in-person learning in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most con- sequential the U.S. currently faces. A wealth of ev- idence suggests that schools can provide in-person instruction with a very low level of risk when safe- ty protocols are successfully implemented. So, what do school districts, teachers, fami- lies and students need to know? As an infectious disease epidemiologist with more than 15 years of research experience – and as co-editor of the COVID-19 Literature Situation Report, which produces a daily summary of the most relevant newly published and pre-print literature related to COVID-19 — I offer answers to some of the most urgent questions about how schools can safely re- sume in-person instruction. Some of this evidence is gleaned from preprint studies that may change after they are peer-reviewed. Will school make children more likely to transmit COVID-19? Infection with the COVID-19 virus has been less common in school-age children, especial- ly those in elementary school, than among oth- er age groups. Evidence from Florida, Utah, Mis- souri and elsewhere indicates that less than 1% of school-age children have had COVID-19, despite most being in school in person. Most cases have not been linked to school exposures. While school outbreaks have occurred, most have been small in scale.
