The suit was filed on behalf of Colvin’s sister, Cathleen Colvin, niece, Justine Araya-Colvin, and other surviving family members. Marie Colvin was killed on February 22, 2012, when her broadcasts to CNN and the BBC were intercepted by regime forces and her position was shelled by artillery fire. This case represents the first to attempt to hold Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime responsible for war conduct under the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, a federal law that allows individuals to sue state sponsors of terrorism for the murder of U.S. citizens. The lawsuit was filed through the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia. The complaint names nine military officers and leader Khaled al-Fares in the plot to assassinate Colvin as a part of the regime’s larger, structural crackdown on professional and citizen journalists attempting to cover the ongoing conflict. As a feature film about Marie goes on release in the UK, we spoke with its director Matthew Heineman and freelance photographer Paul Conroy – Marie’s close friend and colleague – about the personal cost of covering conflict and the importance of telling Marie’s story at a time when journalists are increasingly coming under attack. In her landmark ruling last week, US District Judge Amy Berman Jackson said Marie was “specifically targeted because of her profession, for the purpose of silencing those reporting on the growing opposition movement in the country", adding that “The murder of journalists acting in their professional capacity could have a chilling effect on reporting such events worldwide”. For Paul Conroy, the ruling is a vindication. He sustained severe injuries in the explosion that killed Marie and French freelance photographer Rémi Ochlik in the city of Homs on 22 February 2012. With his expertise as a former soldier with the Royal Artillery, Paul has always argued that the way in which the bombs closed in on the makeshift media centre revealed that the Syrian army was pinpointing its target. She reported in Sri Lanka during the civil war, where she was ambushed and lost an eye in 2001. Colvin also worked in and reported on wars in Egypt, the Middle East and Africa. In February 2012, Colvin was working in Homs, Syria, where the government was bombing the city almost daily.
