Acting in concert and with premeditation, Syrian officials deliberately killed Marie Colvin by launching a targeted rocket attack against a makeshift broadcast studio in the Baba Amr neighborhood of Homs where Colvin and other civilian journalists were residing and reporting on the siege. 2. The rocket attack was the object of a conspiracy formed by senior members of the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad (the “Assad regime”) to surveil, target, and ultimately kill civilian journalists in order to silence local and international media as part of its effort to crush political opposition. -

This critically acclaimed, powerful companion piece to the Oscar®-nominated The Act of Killing, follows a family of survivors of the Indonesian genocide who discover how their son was murdered and the identities of the killers. Also announced in the ceremony was the Best Short Award, which honored LAST DAY OF FREEDOM, directed by Dee Hibbert-Jones and Nomi Talisman. The film is an animated account of Bill Babbitt’s decision to support and help his brother in the face of war, crime and capital execution. February 2016 OVERVIEW For a documentary filmmaker, being recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences for an Oscar nomination in the Best Documentary Feature category is often the pinnacle moment in a career. Beyond the celebratory achievement, the acknowledgment can open up doors for funding and opportunities for next films and career opportunities. The formal recognition happens in three phases: It begins in December with the Academy’s announcement of a shortlist—15 films that advance to a formal nomination for the Academy’s Best Documentary Feature Award. Then, in mid-January, the final list of five official nominations is announced. Finally, at the end of February each year, the one winner is announced at the Academy Awards ceremony. Family of Slain U.S. Journalist Sues Assad Government PC: Paul Conroy The San Francisco-based Center for Justice and Accountability and co-counsel Shearman & Sterling LLP filed a lawsuit against the Syrian government on July 9 for the murder of American journalist Marie Colvin. The suit was filed on behalf of Colvin’s sister, Cathleen Colvin, niece, Justine Araya-Colvin, and other surviving family members. Marie Colvin was killed on February 22, 2012, when her broadcasts to CNN and the BBC were intercepted by regime forces and her position was shelled by artillery fire. This case represents the first to attempt to hold Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime responsible for war conduct under the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, a federal law that allows individuals to sue state sponsors of terrorism for the murder of U.S. citizens. The lawsuit was filed through the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia. The complaint names nine military officers and leader Khaled al-Fares in the plot to assassinate Colvin as a part of the regime’s larger, structural crackdown on professional and citizen journalists attempting to cover the ongoing conflict. The Assad regime, according to the lawsuit and human rights groups, developed a strategy to impose a media blackout on the war by killing or apprehending journalists whose work was reaching worldwide audiences. According to press advocacy groups, at least 200 journalists have been killed since the outbreak of the civil war and hundreds more have gone missing. Colvin was a renowned war correspondent who had spent nearly 26 years covering violent conflicts from Iraq to Sri Lanka. -

FAMILY OF SLAIN U.S. JOURNALIST MARIE COLVIN SUES ASSAD REGIME Lawsuit reveals that legendary reporter was deliberately killed by Syrian forces in a campaign to neutralize the media and attack civilians Washington, DC, July 9, 2016 — Today, the Center for Justice & Accountability (CJA) and co- counsel Shearman & Sterling LLP filed a lawsuit against the government of Syria for the murder of American journalist Marie Colvin. The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on behalf of Marie Colvin’s sister, Cathleen Colvin; her niece, Justine Araya-Colvin; and other surviving family members. Colvin was killed on February 22, 2012, when Syrian forces intercepted her broadcasts in the besieged city of Homs and shelled her position with artillery. CJA’s lawsuit is the first case seeking to hold the regime of President Bashar al-Assad responsible for war crimes. A renowned correspondent with the Sunday Times of London, Colvin traveled to Syria in February 2012 to cover the siege of Homs with British photographer Paul Conroy and Syrian interpreter Wael al-Omar. Homs at the time was an opposition stronghold. It was also a proving ground for the Assad regime’s tactics of siege, starvation, and shelling civilian areas. In her final broadcast from Homs, Marie Colvin told CNN’s Anderson Cooper: “It’s a complete and utter lie they’re only going after terrorists. The Syrian Army is simply shelling a city of cold, starving civilians.” Based on witness accounts and documentary evidence, the complaint alleges that the murder of Marie Colvin was designed to silence her and other media critics of Assad.
