Celebrating 25 Years! See Page 5 Captain’s Dinner at Pezula Championship Course

We would like to extend a thank you to our Captain, David Kidd, who has been Club Captain for the past four years. His assistance and contribution to Pezula Golf club is greatly appreciated. The evening was set as a red carpet walk, which instantly gave those attending a feeling of exclusivity. Each guest received a glass of bubbly on arrival, which made the start of the evening that much more special. The evening started off festively, as fabulous background music set the mood for the evening, compliments of our talented musician and singers, Suzi and Jo, who sang a variety of modern and classic songs. Left: Albert McLean (Chairman) Center: David Kidd ( Club Captain) Right: Liz Keller (Lady Captain) Our Master of Ceremonies for the evening, Duncan Wylie, opened the floor and called on our Captain, Dave Kidd, to welcome and greet all the excited guests. This event was a chance for us to celebrate and give out awards for the winners of the 2018 and 2019 competitions. Our guest speaker, Nick Sloane, presented the saga of the shipwreck championship course Costa Concordia, and detailed the process of salvaging the ship. The guests were astonished by his interesting presentation and the BREATHTAKING COASTAL VIEWS technical processes that had to take FOR AN INSPIRED SWING place in order for the vessel to be salvaged. It was an honour to have one of our members, Barry Richards a South African Cricket legend, join us at our Captain’s dinner. Barry thoroughly enjoyed the setting and found the shipwreck presentation very intriguing. Our Club Chairman, Albert McLean, closed off the evening with a big thank you to all who attended the lovely evening. A big thank you also to our sponsors Dynasty Private Wealth & Investment Management. The victory goes with his win in the Team Championship with Jaco Prinsloo last week. Having turned in 35, it didn’t look like Ritchie was in with a shout but four birdies and an eagle on the homeward stretch brought him back into it. “It started off tough, very slow and it didn’t look like it was going anywhere,” said Ritchie of his final round of the first Limpopo Championship. “But, to turn on the fire on the back nine like I did means a lot more to me than people may think. “After nine holes I had a good talking to myself. I had to do a bit of a game-change. In the beginning of the week all I wanted was just to hit greens, keep it in play and give myself chances but from the second round I saw guys were finding birdies out here so between yesterday and today I had to do something to start making birdies and today that back nine turned out good for me.” With this tournament important to many players for all sorts of reasons – some playing to save their cards, others to get into the Tour Championship in two weeks’ time and others playing to improve their JC Ritchie general standing on the Order of Merit – Ritchie also had something to play for. and the playoff hole. hit the tee shot as good. Your March letter renewed my interest in hole size which was determined by an arbitrary piece of pipe ratified in 1891 by the R&A.

When the ball size standard was increased, the hole size remained the same!

I'm not sure that intelligent logic can be applied to hole size, but when putting determines the result of so many games it surely should not be left to an 1891 arbitrary size ?!

My own though is thats it's too small (specially with the new rule of being able to leave the pin in when putting). Perhaps the thought of one ball in the middle and one either side seems to fit the bill...ie

a 5 inch hole.

Worth T&S pushing the thought with say 3 Clubs with large memberships trying the new hole size and an organised report back from Members?

This can be applied in match play where you might lose just the hole you are playing. However, when playing stroke play one should again asses the sit- uation and play the “smart” shot. The shortest route back into the fairway will hardly ever lead to di- saster and a blowout hole. One more situation faced by golfers is when stuck next to a tree and having the choice to play backwards or trying the shot left handed. Most golfers would not have even tried to play a shot left handed. This shot is easier than one might imagine. The key is be- ing prepared to take it on. It just must be practiced a few times on the range. The left-handed shot is usually best executed with an eight iron because of the size of the face. One just must twist the face around and then take a left-hand- ed grip. The shot should be a short and smooth swing trying to just make contact and advance the ball back into play hopefully closer to the green than from where you were. So to conclude when faced with trouble on the course asses the sit- uation and how to best get out of it and do not be greedy and try the miracle shot. n

27 The Changing the Face of Germiston Golf Club

Germiston Golf Club has been around for over 100 years, and it is time for a change!!! A great sense of renewal and reinvention is almost tangible throughout the Golf Club. The Committee and Management team have been working timeously at developing and implementing new strategic plans, concepts and ideas in order to bring the Golf Club to a better, higher level. More recently, to add to the rejuvenation of the Club, there’s been a significant change in the Management structure. For the first time at Germiston Golf Club, the Committee have appointed a female General Manager. This new dynamic venture has brought Germiston in line with many other Clubs. After completing two months in a and Beverage/Admin Supervisor, Eugene Greenkeeper. the Function catering is still handled temporary role at Germiston Golf Club, Liebenberg, the Golf Director and Pro The Halfway House catering is run inhouse and run by Janet Stothard and Janet Stothard was appointed as the Shop Owner, and Ian Mackintosh, independently by Alec Simon; however, her Team of catering staff. n Clubs new General Manager in October 2018. Janet started her career at the Wanderers Golf Club in 1991. Throughout her 18-year tenure she worked in every department from Pro Shop, to Membership, to Catering, to Banqueting and eventually specialising in Marketing and Events. After 18 years she decided to form her own Event Manager company, successfully running it for 10 years, and specialising in the golf industry, décor and floral designs, promotional gifts/attire, and generally organising any Corporate, Private and Sporting events. Janet Commented “It is a natural progression when in a new Role, to work hard at finding better and more efficient ways of dealing with new challenges. One major plan is to increase the Club’s Membership, Golf Days, Social Functions, Club Events, and also to introduce a new and refreshing concept of Catering. Other areas to attract Golfers would be the constant upkeep and maintenance of our lovely Greens and garden areas. Unfortunately, our Golf Course went through a bit of damage a few months ago, but through our dedicated staff the Course is back to its former glory. We are in a fortunate position whereby we overlook the very scenic Victoria Lake, and we encourage Everyone to experience a day of golf or the use of one of our two Functions Venus’s at our wonderful Golf Club”. We are concentrating hugely on our Marketing strategy. Feel free to contact us about our Showcase evening on Thursday 9 May 2019, whereby we will present Membership options, Advertising opportunities, site walk about, entertainment and cocktails. We have also introduced a new weekly newsletter which is sent out to the members every Friday, with an up to date diary of Club events, photographs, messages etc. The Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages have been amalgamated which has got everybody talking. But sometimes, what being floor bound and standing, we go through a series to that of a baby, progressing from crawling to then presents like a mobility problem actually is a lack of of functional exercise positions based on our neuro- kneeling, which serves as a transitional position between stability. development as humans. Basically, we’re going to mimic being floor based and standing. First, we look at how far you can rotate your hips from a the positions that we first learned to move in. Example - Half Kneeling Step Across standing position. Assuming this is limited, we place you on the floor, thereby removing any stability demands. If Position 1- Supported Position 4 - Standing you can now rotate your hips through the allocated range First, we will learn to access that hip mobility from a Now we see if we can carry over that mobility and harness of motion, we have a motor control/stability problem. supported position, meaning we’re going to be lying on it in a standing position.
