American poetry--20th century Acquisition Information The Black Sparrow Press records were purchased from John Martin between 1996 and 2002. Accruals No additions are expected. Processing/Project Information Processed by Mario H. Ramirez in 2012. Biography/Organization History Established in 1966 by John Martin, Black Sparrow Press is best known for publishing the work of German born and Los Angeles-based poet and author Charles Bukowski. Focusing on poetry, fiction and literary non-fiction, the press also featured the work of Joyce Carol Oates, John Fante, Paul Bowles, William Everson, Aram Saroyan, Eileen Myles and Wanda Coleman, among many others. Noted for its letterpress covers, designed by Martin’s wife Barbara, Black Sparrow also stood out for its commitment to innovative writers and independent publishing. In 2002, Martin closed the press and sold the rights to the work of Bukowski, Fante and Bowles to New York-based Ecco, an imprint of HarperCollins. The rest of the backlist can now be found under the moniker Black Sparrow Books. Scope and Content Note The records of the Black Sparrow Press contain manuscripts, proofs, artwork, photographs, production files and correspondence that highlight its seminal role as an independent publisher in California and the U.S. Key among the collections holdings include manuscripts, correspondence, photographs and ephemera relating to the career of its primary and most infamous author, Charles Bukowski. In addition, there are extensive project files and correspondence with the breadth of writers published by the press throughout its thirty-six year history. Among these are: Wanda Coleman, John Fante, Wyndam Lewis, Andrei Codrescu, James Broughton, Clayton Eshleman, John Yau, Janice Pommy Vega and Diane Wakoski. The collection spans the years 1927-2002, with the bulk concentrating on the years 1970-2002. It is divided into five series: I. Projects, II. Correspondence, III. Authors, IV. Subject Files and V. IMPACT: Internat ional Journal of Research in Humanities, Arts and Literature (IMPACT: IJRHAL) ISSN(P): 2347-4564; ISSN(E): 2321-8878 Vol. 5, Issue 5, May 2017, 73-80 © Impact Journals DIRTY AMERICA: READING CHARLES BUKOWSKI'S SELECTED FICTION MUBASHIR KARIM Research Scholar, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, Delhi, India ABSTRACT It won’t be an understatement to claim that American Literature reached its fruition in the post-war era. After the two wars, the range of themes in American literature, particularly fiction, showed a significant increase. The writers not only criticized the political and economic atmosphere of the country, but were painfully aware of the disturbing issues like racism and gender inequality. While the fiction of postwar America is usually replete with the names of literary giants like like Don Delilah, Donald Barthelme, Thomas Pynchon, William Burroughs, John Barth, Vladimir Nabokov, Toni Morrison, Joseph Heller, the one writer whose work is equally commendable but rather ignored or shooed away by the ‘mainstream literary groups’ is Charles Bukowski. While Bukowski is usually remembered as a poet, his fictional meanderings within the American landscapes provide the readers with a view of America hasn't predominantly found in any writer of his time. Bukowski fiction, through the image of his alter-ego character, shows the real underbelly of American life. With the incorporation of drug addicts, whores, thieves, menial jobs and an unhinged desperation to live the day, Bukowski not only enlarges the space of the novel, but also extends the scope for readers to look closely at the American life once the orgy of war is over.

Conclusion 24 Works Cited 26 2 Abstract Charles Bukowski is, perhaps, one of the most recognizable authors of the second half of the 20th century because of his direct, almost raw form of writing. Nevertheless, one of the major implications of this work has been neglected: his criticism of the philosophical and social construct of the American Dream, one of the first marks of identity of the United States of America, which is still present to this day. In this context, this essay is focused on the analysis of the Bukowskian depiction of the ideal in the novels Post Office (1971), and Factotum (1975) and on the autobiographical magnum opus of the author, Ham on Rye (1981). It is argued that the American Dream is portrayed as a source of alienation, victimization, and dehumanization of the character and the working class as a whole via the character of Henry Chinaski, Bukowski’s alter ego.

^IMC ROBERT CREELEY: A WRITING BIOGRAPHY AND INVENTORY by GERALDINE MARY NOVIK B.A., University of British Columbia, 1966 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in the Department of English We accept this thesis as conforming to the required standard THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA February, 1973 In presenting this thesis in partial fulfilment of the requirements for an advanced degree at the University of British Columbia, I agree that the Library shall make it freely available for reference and study. I further agree that permission for extensive copying of this thesis for scholarly purposes may be granted by the Head of my Department or by his representatives. It is understood that copying or publication of this thesis for financial gain shall not be allowed without my written permission. Department of ENGLISH The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada Date February 7, 1973 ABSTRACT Now, in 1973, it is possible to say that Robert Creeley is a major American poet. The Inventory of works by and about Creeley which comprises more than half of this dissertation documents the publication process that brought him to this stature. The companion Writing Biography establishes Creeley additionally as the key impulse in the new American writing movement that found its first outlet in Origin, Black Mountain Review, Divers Books, Jargon Books, and other alternative little magazines and presses in the fifties. After the second world war a new generation of writers began to define themselves in opposition to the New Criticism and academic poetry then prevalent and in support of Pound and Williams, and as these writers started to appear in tentative little magazines a further definition took place.

My thesis contextualizes his life and his work in relation to his hometown, Boston, reclaiming his rightful place in several seminal poetry movements of post-World War II America, such as Black Mountain College, the Beats, and the San Francisco Renaissance, and the Boston Occult School of poets. My analysis situates his later work properly in relation to select earlier poems, and in relation to his life struggles with mental illness, poverty and drug addiction, addressing the seismic shift in his work that occurred in his politically charged last book of poems, Behind the State Capitol.
