Department of ENGLISH The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada Date February 7, 1973 ABSTRACT Now, in 1973, it is possible to say that Robert Creeley is a major American poet. The Inventory of works by and about Creeley which comprises more than half of this dissertation documents the publication process that brought him to this stature. The companion Writing Biography establishes Creeley additionally as the key impulse in the new American writing movement that found its first outlet in Origin, Black Mountain Review, Divers Books, Jargon Books, and other alternative little magazines and presses in the fifties. After the second world war a new generation of writers began to define themselves in opposition to the New Criticism and academic poetry then prevalent and in support of Pound and Williams, and as these writers started to appear in tentative little magazines a further definition took place. -

SMALL PRESS LEGENDS: JOHN MARTIN Abel Debritto (Brown University, USA) John Martin (1930), founder of Black Sparrow Press, was both publisher and editor for 36 years, retiring in 2002. He is most noted for helping to launch the literary career of Charles Bukowski and re-publishing the works of John Fante. He published over a dozen titles annually, with more than $1 million in sales, including works by Wyndham Lewis, Paul Bowles, Robert Duncan, Theodore Dreiser, Joyce Carol Oates, D.H. Lawrence, Diane Wakoski and many other influential writers. Martin sold Black Sparrow’s backlist to David R. Godine in 2002, and publication rights to Bukowski, Paul Bowles, and John Fante, were sold to Ecco Press, where they still appear, with the now-famous covers designed by his wife Barbara Martin. A.D.: Could you please elaborate on your background before you started Black Sparrow Press in 1966? J.M.: My father was killed in an automobile accident in 1939 when I was eight, and that eliminated financial security for our family. There was enough insurance for my mother to continue raising her three chil- dren. I couldn’t attend college, and had to go to work right out of high school. I enjoyed my own factotum, I had many crummy jobs, but I always did very well in them. I can remember two times when I was hired as extra labor, and ended up becoming the general manager. 171 In 1959, the year I got married, I landed a job with an office supply, print- ing, and furniture company. -

My thesis contextualizes his life and his work in relation to his hometown, Boston, reclaiming his rightful place in several seminal poetry movements of post-World War II America, such as Black Mountain College, the Beats, and the San Francisco Renaissance, and the Boston Occult School of poets. My analysis situates his later work properly in relation to select earlier poems, and in relation to his life struggles with mental illness, poverty and drug addiction, addressing the seismic shift in his work that occurred in his politically charged last book of poems, Behind the State Capitol. -

73 Books in Review / Comptes renclus quelques pages chacun de problémat-iques littéraires bien particulières, intéressantes soit, mais qui cadrent mal avec l'uniformité des articles consacrés aux oeuvres. Par ailleurs, on peut s'interroger sur les motifs à la base de cet ajout, alors que plusieurs questions d'ordre plus géndral aurait demandies à être traities de la même façon. L'inclusion d'articles thématiques, qui par leur trop petit nombre, deux sur 800, nuit en définitive à l'uniformité de I'ouvrage. Malgrd une introduction un peu lourde et difficile à suivre, et quelques choix éditoriaux contestables, il faut reconnattre l'importance d'un ouvrage de référence comme le DOLQ. L'entreprise devient titanesque avec les années, étant donné le nombre toujours croissant de publications. Le mérite de I'équipe du DOLQet des collaborateurs n'en est que plus grand. L'intérêt des chercheurs, des professeurs, des lecteurs et des étudiants à détailler, à observer et, parfois aussi, à critiquer un nouveau tome du DOLQ témoigne de la pertinence et surtout de l'utilité d'une telle publication pour les études littiraires.
