JUNE 2020 VOLUME 37 · NUMBER 6 · RICHARD BETTINI, PRESIDENT & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER · DR. STEPHEN BRADLEY, CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER · DAN GOMES, BOARD CHAIR Health Center Celebrates its Medical School’s 10th Graduating Class On Thursday, May 21st, 4 new doctors from the Wai‘anae campus of the A. T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (ATSU-SOMA) graduated in a virtual ceremony along with their fellow classmates. All 4 graduates have chosen to pursue primary care fields. Two of our 4 graduates will remain in Hawai‘i as part of the University of Hawaii’s Family Medicine residency program. WCCHC became part of this exciting new medical education program in 2007 when ATSU-SOMA selected the Health Center as one of only 11 “Hub Sites” located at community health centers across the country. After spending their first year at the Arizona campus, medical students spend their second, third and Final year studying and training with health center doctors and staff while taking care of members of the community who they will hopefully serve again in the future once they complete their residency. Since 2011, seventy have graduated from Congratulations to (L to R) Dr. Elizabeth Denisova, Dr. Manpreet Sidhu, Dr. Gladys Devano and Dr. Kapono Chang the Waianae Campus of ATSU-SOMA with 80% choosing primary care for their residency. The Health Center congratulates our latest graduating class and is proud of their choices for residency: • Dr. Elizabeth Denisova: Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, New York • Dr. Manpreet Sidhu: Internal Medicine Residency at Las Palmas del Sol Healthcare in El Paso, Texas • Dr. Gladys Devano: Family Medicine Residency, at the University of Hawai`i in Mililani, Hawai`i • Dr. Kapono Chang: Family Medicine Residency at the University of Hawai`i in Mililani, Hawai`i ATTENTION ADULTS: YOU NEED VACCINES TOO! Vaccinations aren’t just for keiki. Get caught up now. Vaccines are a safe and effective way to protect ourselves from dangerous diseases. Many of us are familiar with the routine childhood vaccinations that are required to attend school and an important part of our keiki becoming healthy adults. Did you know that additional vaccines are recommended for teenagers, adults, and kupuna to keep us safe and healthy in other stages of our lives? Depending on your age and health status, important shots beyond childhood may include: hepatitis A and B, human papilloma virus, influenza, meningitis, pertussis, pneumococcal disease, shingles, tetanus, and booster shots for measles, mumps, and rubella. Talk to your healthcare provider to determine what vaccinations are Aren’t just for kids. right for you. You should also check with your healthcare provider if you are unsure about your vaccination Adults need them too! history or if you think you may be past-due. Routine vaccinations are especially important during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Although a vaccine for the virus that causes COVID-19 is not yet available (we hope this comes soon), you can help keep your immune system strong and maximize your protection from secondary infections by staying up-to-date with all other recommended shots. Now is the best time to get caught-up. Our community is fortunate to have very few COVID-19 cases at the moment, but we don’t know what will happen in the future. Some experts are predicting a larger “2nd wave” in the coming months and this could bring a return to even stricter stay-at- home orders. It can also take several weeks for a vaccine to start working after you get it. WCCHC is advising all community members to speak with their healthcare provider and get any missing shots as soon as possible. If you are a patient of WCCHC, or you would like to become one, call our WCCHC Hotline at (808) 697-3170 to schedule a Telehealth video or phone visit, directly from your mobile device. Your medical provider will review your immunization history and schedule a convenient time for you to get any missing vaccinations, if needed.
