MUMBO ISLAND CAMP

Camp Summary:

Location

 In Lake National Park near the southern end of .  The Kayak Africa Base Camp is on the mainland, in the fishing village of Cape Maclear.

Children of all ages are accommodated and partake in activities with all other guests. Children up to 16 years must share with an adult/s in the same room.

The minimum age for scuba diving activities (open water diving course) is 12 years.

Accommodation:

6 Meru-style safari tents consisting of:

 5 x twin-bedded tents each with two three quarter beds  1 x family unit consisting of four three quarter beds (Please note that the twin beds can be easily pushed together to make a double bed)

Guests are required to move out of the tents by 10:30 on the day of departure.

This camp can accommodate 12 adults and 2 children, subject to concession numbers and / or concession availability.

Room details:

 Meru-style safari tents perched on rocks, with elevated wooden walkways (a wooden walkway, over the sea, connects the private beach to the small accommodation island).  During winter extra blankets are provided.  Liquid soaps, shampoo, sunscreen, citronella spray, towels, kikois and torches are supplied in each tent.  Bathroom facilities comprise of bucket shower with fire-warmed water and eco-toilet.  Each tent has a mosquito net and a viewing deck with hammock overlooking the lake.

Camp Description

Main Area:

 Dining, bar and water sports area of timber and thatch.  Sundowner deck.  Private beach.  Valuables to be stored in a central safe.

Activities:

 Sea kayaking (a guide will be available to assist beginners and to accompany guests if they wish).  Snorkelling (with available equipment).  Boating – sunset cruises or island tours (on request).  Swimming  Scuba diving (at an extra cost incl. equipment hire).  5 nature trails (these are clearly marked and can be done without a guide).  Birding

Activities are at guests’ own discretion. Guests may do as much or as little as they like

Electricity & Water.

 There is no electricity at Mumbo Island and therefore lighting is provided by hurricane paraffin lanterns and solar lights.  Water is solar-heated.  Water gets supplied from the Lake and is treated.  Please ensure your batteries are charged before arrival at Mumbo Island. Solar batteries available on the island.  Only battery powered sleep apnoea machines can be used.

Drinks Policy

Drinks are not included in the nightly rate and are charged to the guests’ account.

Laundry Policy Laundry is provided on a daily basis (weather permitting) at a small charge payable directly at camp. Washing detergent is supplied because camp staff will not wash “smalls” due to prevailing local traditions in the country.

Extras Payment

US Dollars, GBP Sterling, Euro and South African Rands are widely accepted. You are strongly advised to avoid black market currency traders. There is no limit to the amount of foreign currency brought into Malawi, however, it must be declared and accounted for on departure.

At Mumbo Island there are no credit card facilities. All extras are to be settled at Kayak Africa Base on return from the island.

Please note that MasterCard is no longer widely accepted in Malawi.

Driving Times to Cape Maclear (Kayak Africa)

To/from Lilongwe: +/- 4 to 5 hours

To/from Club Makokola: +/- 1 hour

To/from Inn: +/- 7 hours

To/from Mvuu Wilderness Lodge: +/- 2.5 hours

To/from Blantyre: +/- 3.5 hours

To/from Zomba: +/- 3 hours

Once at Cape Maclear, there is a one-hour boat transfer to the Island.

Self-Drive Access Mumbo Island is not directly accessible on a self-drive basis. For any self-drive itinerary, vehicles would need to be parked at Cape Maclear (Kayak Africa) at own risk.

- Scheduled boat transfer departure times: 10:30 and 15:00 Kayak Africa base camp to Mumbo Island

09:30 and 14:00 from Mumbo Island to Kayak Africa base camp.

- Boat Transfer is 45 minutes. - The charge for the scheduled boat transfers is included in the rate. - Non-scheduled transfers are at additional charge.

However, during rainy season (between mid–November to mid-March) we advise extra caution for self-drive itineraries. The road conditions in Malawi are poor during the rainy season, tar-mac roads (except for the main roads) become full with potholes making it difficult for vehicles to maneuver. The gravel roads get covered in mud with puddles of water being at least 20 cm deep.

The Owner/Operator/Pilot in Command needs to sign our Indemnity, Waiver and Disclaimer policy for authorization to land at our airstrips. In addition the Owner/Operator/Pilot in Command is required to acknowledge the preferred supplier and self-fly-in information notice. Please consult your travel consultant as all procedures need to be finalized in advance.

Wilderness makes no representation whatsoever regarding the suitability of the aerodrome, its safety and/or its fitness for purposes of use by any type of aircraft under any conditions. The Company warrants that it will make enquiries with the relevant Aviation Authorities regarding the suitability of any aerodrome for any particular type of aircraft and activity. Any information provided to the Company shall not amount to or imply a representation by Wilderness as to suitability or fitness for purpose.

Gratuity Schedule

The following is the suggested gratuity schedule only and is subject to service standards:

Guides: USD 10.00 per person per day

General Camp Staff: USD 5.00 per person per day

Specialist Guides (if applicable): USD 10.00 per person per day

Kayak Africa request that all tips are put in the tip box at the Base Camp rather than handed directly to Island staff.
