BAROQUE ROMANTIC CLASSICAL

These composers lived and worked between 1600 – 1750. Music during this time was very complex and Baroque made extensive use of counterpoint (two or more melodies sounding at the same time). Popular genres and forms during this time were the opera, the dance suite, and the fugue. The Baroque era marked the

beginning of the Common Practice Period.

These composers lived and worked from the end of the Baroque era to about 1825. Music during this time became simpler, often having only one melody sounding over a chordal accompaniment. The opera remained popular, and the famous symphony form was developed during this time along with the string quartet.

These composers lived and worked from the end of the Classical era to about 1900. Music during this time was often very expressive and emotional. The German Lied, meaning song, was quite popular during this time. Program music, which is music that attempts to “paint a picture” with sound, also became very popular. The end of the Romantic era marked the end of the Common Practice Period.
