Scrub Mint Dicerandra frutescens Shinners he scrub mint is a small, fragrant shrub that inhabits Federal Status: Endangered (Nov. 1, 1985) the scrub of central peninsular Florida. It bears a Critical Habitat: None Designated Tstrong resemblance to another Dicerandra species, Florida Status: Endangered Garretts mint, but can be differentiated by its scent, the Recovery Plan Status: Revision (May 18, 1999) color of its flowers, and the size of its leaves. Loss of habitat due to residential and agricultural development (particularly Geographic Coverage: Rangewide for citrus groves), as well as fire suppression in tracts of remaining habitat, are the principle threats to this plant. Description The scrub mint is a dense or straggly, low-growing shrub (Kral, 1983). It reaches 50 cm in height and grows from a deep, stout, spreading-branching taproot. Its branches are mostly spreading, and sometimes are prostrate. Its shoots have two forms, one which is strictly leafy and overwintering, and another which is flowering and dies back after fruiting. The leaves vary in shape. They can be narrowly oblong- elliptic, linear-elliptic, or linear-oblanceolate (Kral 1983). The upper surface of the leaves is dark green, with the midrib slightly impressed. The lower surface is slightly paler, with the midrib slightly raised. They are 1.5 to 2.5 cm long, 2 to 3 mm wide, subsessile, flattish but somewhat fleshy, narrowly or broadly rounded at the apical end, have entire margins, and are not revolute. -

McBrayer & John Scott Harrison) ABSTRACT In my 1 st chapter I investigate the phenotypic variation of the Florida scrub lizard by examining sprinting and jumping ability. These are key performance measures that have been widely studied in vertebrates. The vast majority of these studies, however, use methodologies that lack ecological context by failing to consider the complex habitats many animals live in. Here, I filmed running lizards to address how behavioral and performance strategies change as lizards approach obstacles of varying height. Obstacle size had a significant influence on both behavior (e.g. obstacle crossing strategy, intermittent locomotion) and performance (e.g. sprint speed, jump distance). Researchers should thus consider the complexity of a species’ habitat in designing studies of locomotion. -

U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service June 14, 2016 Biological Opinion ON Revised Land and Resource Management Plan Amendment to increase Florida Scrub- Jay Management Areas on the Ocala National Forest (Amendment 12) Prepared by: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Jacksonville, Florida Biological Opinion U.S. Forest Service Southern Region FWS Log No. 04EF1000-2016-F-0215 2 The Service concurs with your determination that the effects from activities under the proposed amendment on the Florida bonamia, scrub buckwheat, and Lewton’s polygala are within the scope of effects described in the September 18, 1998 BA for the LRMP and evaluated in the Service’s 1998 Opinion. In addition, effects of implementing the LRMP (including the proposed amendment) on the scrub pigeon wings were recently disclosed in your Biological Assessment (BA) of Nov 24, 2015 were evaluated in the Service’s Opinion of December 17, 2015. Therefore, these plant species will not be addressed further in the amended Opinion below. This amended Opinion is based on information provided to the Service through a BA, telephone conversations, e-mails, field investigation notes, and other sources of information. A complete administrative record of this consultation is on file at the Jacksonville Ecological Services Office. Consultation History September 21, 1998: NFF initiated formal consultation on revision of the LRMP December 18, 1998: The Service provided a non-jeopardy combined Biological and Conference Opinion on the LRMP to NFF concluding formal consultation. From March 2014 to November of 2015, the Service and staff from the NFF supervisor’s office and ONF participated in several meetings and conference calls to discuss how to address Forest Service Section 7(a)(1) obligations under the Act and the proposed amendment to the NFF LRMP. -

Mission: to understand and preserve the rare plants of Florida Microhabitat studies inform management needs for two endangered central Florida scrub species, Dicerandra immaculata var. immaculata and Lupinus aridorum Lakela’s mint Scrub lupine Ridge species are particularly unique & found nowhere else in the world Archbold biological station Lakela’s Mint and Scrub Lupine are each: • located on specific ridge systems • restricted to scrub habitat • very narrow geographic distribution within ridge/habitat • Short-lived perennials • Habitats historically maintained by frequent burns • primarily threatened by loss of and degraded habitat due to fire suppression • Remaining natural populations declining • Nearly all remaining populations on private land • Federally and state listed as endangered • Population introductions likely necessary to prevent extinction Goals for microhabitat research: • characterize specific habitat requirements required for survival and recruitment • data to inform land managers • inform population introductions Lakela’s Mint (Dicerandra immaculata) • 5 wild (historical) meta- populations (1 large population fragmented by development) – 1 has been augmented – 2 sites have large areas where individuals were extirpated due to habitat degradation • 3 introduced populations Lakela’s Mint D. immaculata var. immaculata Evaluating microhabitat parameters Data collection in September 2012 from seven populations: three introduced, one augmented and three natural 20 healthy plants and 20 random locations (without plants) were chosen 20 extirpated locations at two wild sites Data collection occurred in within 1 meter diameter areas and 1 m2 quadrats around each plant or random/extirpated location Investigation differences between: 1.
