LIFEWATER INTERNATIONAL UGANDAN WASH CURRICULUM

Using design thinking and methodology to educate rural Ugandan students about proper sanitation and hygiene practices.

My team of Notre Dame design seniors teamed up with Lifewater International and Chicagoland creative agency Rule29 to create a new primary school curriculum teaching Ugandan students about safe water access, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). Using Lifewater International’s existing WASH program as a starting point, we were tasked with improving the content and format of the existing 200+ page curriculum and corresponding educational tools to better suit the young Ugandan student using research, design thinking and information architecture. Ultimately, we had the opportunity to travel to Gulu, an impoverished rural region in northern Uganda, to test our prototype in two distinct primary schools. After our return, we synthesized our research and presented our findings to Lifewater and Rule29 with the intent to implement them in the future.

Since this project was initially slated to be completed within a semester-long course, we THEME needed to conduct a vast majority of our research on the Ugandan educational system and existing WASH curriculum from a distance. We relied heavily on thorough online After conducting a thorough investigation of Lifewater’s existing curriculum, we collectively investigations into the culture and academic systems of Uganda, personal interviews decided that we wanted to explore the implementation of an overarching theme that would with Ugandan contacts and American teachers in Uganda, and secondhand accounts better capture students’ attention and empower them to make a change in their communities. from Justin Ahrens, Principal at Rule29, and Pamela Crane, the Director of International This theme would liken students to respected leaders and would be evident in the activities Programs at Lifewater International. STRUCTURE

The existing Lifewater International curriculum was written to last all day for five days and left no time for other classes. Additionally, it was structured into ten loose “building blocks” and was not grouped thematically by the key issues addressed (water access, sanitation, hygiene).

We chose to restructure the curriculum to span the course of three weeks, with each week focusing on one of the three themes. The WASH curriculum would be taught for 40—50 minutes each day Monday through Thursday, then would focus on a special community outreach initiative each Friday in the hopes that the children would feel empowered to spread WASH knowledge in their homes and communities. Friday would also include a team-based oral examination, ensuring that the teacher can keep track of the students’ progress.

ACTIVITIES

We wanted to ensure that the curriculum provided teachers with a wide array of learning activities in order to accommodate many different learning styles. Our curriculum included interactive group activities, storytelling, blackboard activities, oral group examinations, demonstrations, miniature field trips, and individual workbook pages.

Our team proposed the creation and distribution of workbooks (known as playbooks, in keeping with the football theme) for each student. These would be used as silent activities while in class, but could also be taken home and used as a tool with which to educate others about WASH concepts.

Lifewater International Ugandan WASH Curriculum // 4 3 // DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Bearing in mind that color printers are rare, if not impossible to access, in rural Uganda, we designed a black and white curriculum using Lifewater’s new brand standards, as developed by Rule29. In order to get the WASH curriculum delivered to the broadest audience, it needs to be easily reproduced. Since we opted against using color to organize our curriculum elements, we relied heavily on different type treatments, a basic icons set, and call-outs to place emphasis, provide supplemental materials, and mark transitions.

Lifewater International Ugandan WASH Curriculum // 6 4 // ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH IN GULU, UGANDA

RESEARCH STATEMENT

“The proposed design research process is intended to assist us in developing a stronger empathy for the extreme cultural differences between privileged American designers and rural northern Ugandan schools through observation, surveys, interviews, and ethnographic research. By using cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary collaborative techniques with teachers in rural Ugandan communities near Gulu, we hope to develop a greater understanding of the nuances of using design thinking in an unfamiliar context, ultimately producing a WASH curriculum that best suits the needs of our friends in Uganda, from a content-based, verbal, and aesthetic perspective.”

RESEARCH PLAN

During our time in northern Uganda, we had the opportunity to visit two different schools: smaller Mother Teresa Primary (private, Catholic) and larger Laiyibi Primary (public). The difference in size and government funding between these two schools made for an interesting contrast that enhanced our research even further.

We arranged to have group interviews with primary teachers at both schools. While our focus was more on upper primary (Ugandan P4-P7), we welcomed teachers of younger students as well. We were mostly concerned with learning more about the Ugandan education system and how water, sanitation, and hygiene is currently taught in schools; however, we wanted to ask some questions about the design and organization of our curriculum prototype if time permitted.

After our group interview sessions, we went on tours of the school grounds and had further, more personal (and non-research-based) interactions with the teachers. These informal sessions helped us get a better understanding of the school culture and the resources they had available for use in the classroom. 5 // SYNTHESIZING AND UNCOVERING THE RESEARCH INSIGHTS

At the completion of our research, we grouped and synthesized our findings. Ultimately, we presented Lifewater International and Rule29 with a research report document that detailed our process, findings and recommendations for moving forward with a new curriculum design.

INSIGHTS

• Government-mandated syllabus renders our prototype teacher’s manual useless. Despite all of our remote research when preparing the curriculum prototype, we never encountered the government-mandated syllabus in Uganda that instructs the teachers when and how they are supposed to teach each element of water, sanitation, and hygiene education.

• Teachers are always looking for resources to supplement their lessons. Teachers are given a copy of the mandatory syllabus for their grade level, however, they have to purchase separate books that provide more in-depth lesson plans and teaching resources. Because of the lack of funding given to schools (particularly private schools), teachers often have to pay for these tools with their own money, therefore relying on inexpensive or free resources and activities whenever possible.

IDEAS

• Rework our curriculum into a supplemental resource packet to use with the syllabus. After talking to teachers and conducting our own additional research on the government- mandated syllabus, we recognize that there is an opportunity to create a set of supplemental materials that work in conjunction with the national requirements. These materials could include stories, field trip ideas, test questions, community outreach project suggestions, coloring pages, workbook pages, songs, dramas, and demonstrations. Many of these elements were already incorporated into our initial prototype and would just need reorganization to translate into this type of resource packet.

• Encourage the creation of a WASH club in primary schools. At many schools, students are required to participate in at least one after-school club or activity. Schools can help encourage WASH behaviors by creating and promoting a WASH club that focuses on keeping the school compound clean and spreading the word about safe water, sanitation, and hygiene. Positions in this club can be held in high esteem and leadership roles will be coveted.

AVMA LIFE BRANDING

Rebranding a personal insurance network specifically designed to meet the needs of veterinary professionals.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) approached 88 Brand Partners for assistance rebranding not only their primary organization, but also their two insurance trusts. The third in the series of rebranding projects, AVMA GHLIT offers personal insurance plans— particularly in the areas of disability, life, vision and dental—that are specifically catered to the unique needs of veterinarians. After terminating their health insurance arm—the “H” in GHLIT— the trust was seeking a name change as well as a modernized branding system that would offer flexibility for growth heading into the future.

AVMA LIFE Branding // 10 2 // DEVELOPING THE WARM, logotype iconography MODERN SYSTEM

After testing was conducted, we learned that 22 out of 38 veterinary respondents of a variety of ages, genders and specializations selected my family-oriented system as the most favorable of the five options presented. I used the specific feedback from the focus groups to develop a new system that was heavily anchored in the initial concepts I had proposed, staying true to my original aesthetic presentation and maintaining the sense of warmth and modernization that made it successful. Additionally, the name made its official transition to AVMA LIFE from AVMA GHLIT. color palette photography

The typefaces were borrowed from both the mother and sister brand to maintain visual consistency among the family. The color palette was designed to be flexible, bold and inviting, with a warm red-orange as the primary color, supported by a chartreuse, light blue, cream, and purple-black. This palette helped differentiate the new AVMA LIFE from the other two brands, while allowing it to coexist with them.

Our photographic approach was to tell the work/life narrative of our target audience— veterinarians—in order to better distinguish AVMA LIFE as the only personal insurance network specifically tailored to meet their needs. One veterinarian would be photographed in a variety of slice-of-life scenes, intending to tell a well-rounded story in each communication. I had the opportunity to travel to Nashville in December 2015 to assist with the AVMA LIFE photo shoot, and some photo selects from this shoot can be seen at right. typography

THE POPCORN FACTORY CATALOGS & PHOTOGRAPHIC ART DIRECTION

Giving a fresh new look to a tried-and-true marketing tactic: the catalog.

The Popcorn Factory, a premium food gifting brand, and 88 Brand Partners began their collaboration in mid-2014. After a year as the lead designer and production artist on the client, I was promoted to Art Director and made it my personal mission to refresh and elevate the look and feel of the brand’s catalog layouts and product photography for web and print. I wanted to give the brand a more sophisticated, sleek look through the implementation of standardized layouts, streamlined typography, clean and progressive product styling and an integration with digital media in order to help it best outshine its competitors in the premium food gifting space.

As part of my role, I was expected to coordinate and manage the entire process, from strategic sales and forecast-led pagination plans to shot list development, on-set photographic direction and the management of a large team and client contacts.

The Popcorn Factory Catalogs & Photographic Art Direction // 17 2 // UPDATING THE PHOTOGRAPHY & PRODUCT STYLING

When I earned the lead Art Director role, I was determined to update the photography to make it simpler, cleaner, and ultimately increase the sophistication of the brand. I pushed the client toward full-page beauty shots, environmental elements, tighter crops, more standardized product arrangements, and dramatic lighting to elevate the brand image.

All images shown are from the Fall & Halloween 2016 catalogs.

The Popcorn Factory Catalogs & Photographic Art Direction // 18 3 // DEVELOPING THE NEW CATALOG LAYOUT

In accordance with the image refresh, the design needed a bit of a boost—for efficiency as well as visual appeal. I started by selecting a new typeface combination to refresh the typography we had previously inherited from the client’s old catalog design team. I continued the process by cleaning up the styling of the product copy, standardizing the catalog color palette, introducing new visual cues, refreshing the layout for the order form page, and introducing a “yum” flavor profile spread to showcase the wide variety of popcorn flavors offered.

EASTLAND DISASTER HISTORICAL SOCIETY BRANDING

Preparing a Chicago nonprofit for a banner 100th anniversary year.

On July 24, 1915, the S.S. Eastland capsized in the while it was still tethered to the dock, killing 844 people. To this day, the Eastland Disaster remains Chicago’s largest loss- of-life disaster, and in 1997, sisters Barbara Wachholz and Susan Decker co-founded a non- profit organization to commemorate and honor those who were affected by this great tragedy. In early 2015, just under 100 years after the disaster, 88 Brand Partners took on the Eastland Disaster Historical Society (EDHS) as its pro-bono account, developing a brand system, website, and communications to help the nonprofit gain traction during its anniversary year and beyond.

CLIENT // Eastland Disaster Historical Society AGENCY // 88 Brand Partners ROLE // Lead Designer TEAM // Marco Siegel-Acevedo, Andy Yamashiro, Bryan Simkin Eastland Disaster Historical Society Branding // 21 1 // RESEARCHING THE DISASTER inspiration my logo concept AND ESTABLISHING THE MOOD

After the project kickoff, the team and I began feverishly researching the Eastland Disaster and its role in Chicago history. As we dug into the archives and got a better sense of the disaster and its repercussions throughout the city, we started to gather a large file of inspiration photos for the identity as well as the 100th year commemoration events on the weekend of July 24, 2015.

Each member of the design team developed initial logo concepts to present to the client. Mine is shown at right and was intended to be a departure from their existing logo, which featured the boat as its key visual element.

Eastland Disaster Historical Society Branding // 22 2 // CREATING THE BRAND IDENTITY final logo color palette

After presenting 3 logo options to the client, we settled on the mark predominately created by Marco Siegel-Acevedo—an “E” that appears to be sinking.

Moving forward with a smaller team, we began fleshing out the details of the brand system. The typography used throughout the system was chosen to evoke the typography found on period vessels, particularly the specific face found on the S.S. Eastland. The primary color palette, consisting of a light blue and slightly rusty red, was selected to be reminiscent to photography those found in the Chicago flag. This directly tied the disaster back to Chicago, preserving its historical significance within the city. Finally, evoking a sensibility from old newspapers of the era, we used strong horizontal lines to break up sections of copy in communications and on the website. Red headlines were sandwiched between two blue horizontal bars to serve as a further tie to the Chicago flag. typography All photography remained black and white, even modern imagery, to serve as a nod to the photography at the time of the disaster. Eastland Disaster Historical Society Branding // 26 BONUS // PARTNERSHIP WITH ALE SYNDICATE BREWERY

As part of the 100th anniversary celebration, EDHS teamed up with Ale Syndicate to create a special Czech Pilsner in honor of the 844 people who who lost their lives in the Eastland Disaster. Our team at 88 Brand Partners was tasked with the design of the label and neck tag, both of which had to be true to both the new EDHS brand as well as the Ale Syndicate brand. There were six neck tags in total: two that showcased the stories of survivors, two honoring those who perished, and two acknowledging those first responders who were at the scene, fighting to save lives.

Ale Syndicate only produced 844 bottles of the Pilsner, which sold out even before the date of the 100th Anniversary.

Eastland Disaster Historical Society Branding // 27 Throughout most of 2015, we worked with creative agency 88 Brand Partners to develop “our brand, visual identity, and messaging. This included a new logo, responsive website, and numerous pieces of corporate collateral (letterhead, press kit, banners, and the like). Throughout this project, we also had the very special privilege of working regularly with Laurel. Her knowledge of brand concepts and her expertise in design were clearly evident, and her input and feedback helped direct our decisions which helped shape our finished products. Perhaps what was most appreciated was her effervescent, friendly “can-do” approach to everything including new requests that were either out of scope from the original project and/or were submitted with very short lead times. Laurel has that perfect

blend of professional competence and interpersonal skills: She made us feel like our work was the most important thing for her at any given moment throughout“ the entire project, and her quick turnaround on the work requests clearly proved it.

ORION WINE IMPORTS BRANDING

Branding a startup seeking to import the best wines from South America.

After visiting his daughter in Santiago, Chile in 2014, Peter Creighton became inspired by the culture, beauty, and lush landscapes of the Chilean Central Valley. Always the entrepreneur, Peter decided to launch his own wine importation business with the mission to seek out the best yet-undiscovered wines from both Chile and Argentina and bring them to the United States market.

CLIENT // Orion Wine Imports AGENCY // Freelance Project ROLE // Designer & Art Director Orion Wine Imports Branding // 29 1 // CONDUCTING INTAKE INTERVIEWS inspiration initial logo concepts AND INITIAL IDEATION

During our initial intake discussions, Peter mentioned that he wanted his brand to feel modern, international, and fresh. Chile and Argentina are considered the birthplace of “New World” wines, so the logo should reflect this shift from classical to modern techniques, while still reflecting the care and attention given to this craft. I spent some time researching the wineries in this region and performing a competitive analysis to understand the market, both of other importers as well as wineries in the region seeking to export.

Orion Wine Imports Branding // 30 2 // DEVELOPING THE BRAND SYSTEM final logo color palette

The winning mark centers around the idea of being handcrafted. Just as wines are handcrafted, this logo was too... it was built from a loose sketch, a blend, that ultimately builds the perfect bottle. The typography has a slightly more rustic and vintage appearance than the other two conceptually, showing that winemaking is every bit as much history and tradition as it is experimentation and creation. Orion Wine Imports is also experimenting and tasting in order to find the best South American wine blends and build its company portfolio... its own homemade and curated blend of flavors to share with the world. photography

To complement the black and white logo, I fleshed out a more complete color palette reminiscent of the colors found in a rustic Chilean vineyard. I also collected a slew of images that highlight the richness of the region and enhance the brand.

WAYFINDER ADVISORS BRANDING

Developing a brand identity for a startup life coaching business.

I partnered with Theresa Sullivan, founder of Wayfinder Advisors, to work on an identity system for her startup life coaching business. After starting as a life coach to redirect dissatisfied adults toward a happier career, Theresa is in the process of shifting her business to include helping high school students “discover who they were born to be.”

CLIENT // Wayfinder Advisors, Theresa Sullivan COURSE // VCD 8, Design for Social Good—University of Notre Dame PROFESSOR // Robert Sedlack ROLE // Designer & Art Director Wayfinder Advisors Branding // 34 1 // CONDUCTING INTAKE INTERVIEWS inspiration initial logo concepts AND INITIAL IDEATION

During our initial intake discussions, Theresa mentioned that she wanted her brand to appear approachable, yet professional. She used the words “spa,” “peace,” “personal,” “simplicity,” and “comfort” to describe its ideal look and feel. After our conversation, I gathered inspiration and began my logo sketches.

Wayfinder Advisors Branding // 35 2 // DEVELOPING THE BRAND SYSTEM final logo color palette

The selected mark featured a more organic aesthetic, using water droplet shapes to form a compass. The color palette was derived with “spa” in mind, with pale blue hues at the center, complemented by a leaf green and plum purple. The typography maintained the organization’s sense of professionalism and sophistication. The system’s photography remains bright and centers around an individual in a work setting who exhibits a sense of fulfillment or happiness. photography
