Daily Post-Tribune 1944 Stars and Stripes Daily Post-Tribune 1944 Stars and Stripes Edition Saturday, March 24, 1944 Indexed by Jeffrey Brylski A microfilm copy of the Daily Post-Tribune, Stars and Stripes Edition, March 20, 1943 is available at the Peru Public Library and the LaSalle Public Library. A paper copy is available at the Richard A. Mautino Public Library (Spring Valley, Illinois). When researching ancestors, finding information beyond city directories and census records is difficult. Newspapers are vital to adding context, providing birth, marriage, death announcements and sometimes more. In March 1943, the local La Salle newspaper published a special Stars and Stripes edition listing over 1,000 local men and women serving in the military. Thanks to Jeff Brylski's indexing of the edition, researchers have another area resource for searching circa World War Two. From the Indexer, Jeff Brylski, The following is an alphabetical list of the area men and women serving in the armed forces appearing in the "Honor" Edition of the Daily Post-Tribune, published on March 25, 1944. Unlike the special editions for 1942 and 1943, this edition is comprised of 7 sections and 112 pages. The sections are not numbered. Each section begins with page 1 and ends with page 16. Most of the references consist of a photograph of the service man or woman, accompanied by a short biography and current military assignment. Obvious typographical errors were corrected for the index. Please note that many men were drafted into the Army but were trained to serve in the Army Air Corps, or simply the Air Corps (AC). The U.S. Air Force was established after WWII. The first Army Air Corps training facility was located at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis County, Missouri. Also following the attack on Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941) many army inductees were assigned to 'coast guard' artillery training units located in California. However, these were Army units, not U.S. Coast Guard facilities. Finally, the publisher, editors, and journalists who worked many weeks gathering information for the Stars and Stripes Edition deserve posthumous salutes for performing a service above and beyone the call of duty. While “artists” like Soulja Boy and Chief Keef have reason to worry, lyrically dexterous rappers are experiencing a renaissance. Spearheading this movement of talent-first rappers is Earl Sweatshirt of the Odd Future crew, underground rap’s greatest talent and secret weapon. Earl (Thebe Kgositsile) just released his debut studio album Doris, his first substantial work since his return to the spotlight. At the tender age of 16, the L.A. native released his eponymous mix-tape that turned quite a few heads – first due to his immense talent and young age, then due to his lyrics rife with stomach-churning violence. Upon its release, Earl had virtually vanished – his mother sent him to an at-risk youth camp in Samoa, which left crowds shouting “Free Earl” at concerts, fueling the towering hype and mystery that his mix-tape had garnered. Since his return a year ago, he’s had a few excellent guest spots – a verse on Frank Ocean’s Grammy-winning Channel Orange, a verse on the posse track “Oldie,” and a verse on Captain Murphy’s (a.k.a.

  • A Critical Analysis of the Black President in Film and Television
“WELL, IT IS BECAUSE HE’S BLACK”: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE BLACK PRESIDENT IN FILM AND TELEVISION Phillip Lamarr Cunningham A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2011 Committee: Dr. Angela M. Nelson, Advisor Dr. Ashutosh Sohoni Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Michael Butterworth Dr. Susana Peña Dr. Maisha Wester © 2011 Phillip Lamarr Cunningham All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Ph.D., Advisor With the election of the United States’ first black president Barack Obama, scholars have begun to examine the myriad of ways Obama has been represented in popular culture. However, before Obama’s election, a black American president had already appeared in popular culture, especially in comedic and sci-fi/disaster films and television series. Thus far, scholars have tread lightly on fictional black presidents in popular culture; however, those who have tend to suggest that these presidents—and the apparent unimportance of their race in these films—are evidence of the post-racial nature of these texts. However, this dissertation argues the contrary. This study’s contention is that, though the black president appears in films and televisions series in which his presidency is presented as evidence of a post-racial America, he actually fails to transcend race. Instead, these black cinematic presidents reaffirm race’s primacy in American culture through consistent portrayals and continued involvement in comedies and disasters. In order to support these assertions, this study first constructs a critical history of the fears of a black presidency, tracing those fears from this nation’s formative years to the present.

  • Oxford by the Numbers: What Are the Odds That the Earl of Oxford Could Have Written Shakespeare’S Poems and Plays?
OXFORD BY THE NUMBERS: WHAT ARE THE ODDS THAT THE EARL OF OXFORD COULD HAVE WRITTEN SHAKESPEARE’S POEMS AND PLAYS? WARD E.Y. ELLIOTT AND ROBERT J. VALENZA* Alan Nelson and Steven May, the two leading Oxford documents scholars in the world, have shown that, although many documents connect William Shakspere of Stratford to Shakespeare’s poems and plays, no documents make a similar connection for Oxford. The documents, they say, support Shakespeare, not Oxford. Our internal- evidence stylometric tests provide no support for Oxford. In terms of quantifiable stylistic attributes, Oxford’s verse and Shakespeare’s verse are light years apart. The odds that either could have written the other’s work are much lower than the odds of getting hit by lightning. Several of Shakespeare’s stylistic habits did change during his writing lifetime and continued to change years after Oxford’s death. Oxfordian efforts to fix this problem by conjecturally re-dating the plays twelve years earlier have not helped his case. The re-datings are likewise ill- documented or undocumented, and even if they were substantiated, they would only make Oxford’s stylistic mismatches with early Shakespeare more glaring. Some Oxfordians now concede that Oxford differs from Shakespeare but argue that the differences are developmental, like those between a caterpillar and a butterfly. This argument is neither documented nor plausible. It asks us to believe, without supporting evidence, that at age forty-three, Oxford abruptly changed seven to nine of his previously constant writing habits to match those of Shakespeare and then froze all but four habits again into Shakespeare’s likeness for the rest of his writing days.
