Pastoral care & boarding

Job Description

Trent College seeks to appoint a Head of Netball from September 2020, to lead and manage all aspects of Netball at Trent College, whilst generating strong foundations through close consultation and involvement of the programme run at The Elms (The Junior School to Trent College). This will be an outstanding opportunity for a professional to drive netball in a leading independent school. The College seeks a charismatic leader, visionary coach and teacher who can efficiently manage a large and complex programme of netball. The successful candidate will have a clear understanding of the place of netball in modern day independent school sport and the challenges and opportunities that brings.

The successful candidate will build on the strong provision for performance and participation netball from The Elms to Trent College, establish a positive environment and build a culture of enthusiastic participation, progression and performance amongst all pupils.

The Head of Netball will report to the Director of Sport and will have the responsibility for pushing achievement forward for all age groups and abilities. Increasing the profile of netball through the development of club and county players should be a realistic goal, therefore creating strong links with representative organisations and performance pathways.

The Sports Programme

Our sports philosophy is based on the ‘3 P’s’ – Participation - Progression – Performance. Our aim is to provide the opportunity for all Trent College and The Elms pupils to find an activity they enjoy, which will help them lead a healthy and active lifestyle, then for those who are able, we deliver the highest levels of support through our performance programmes enabling each pupil to reach for excellence. Our performance sports are Rugby, Hockey and Cricket for boys, Hockey, Netball and Tennis for girls. Cricket for girls is fast becoming another powerful sport at the school.

The 3 P’s are communicated widely and regularly, our pupils understand where they fit along the sliding scale between competition and participation, encouragingly the benefit is that they can see a pathway to achieving a higher level. Whether that be representing the school, achieving a new personal best or striving to become a National Champion.

We run a values driven programme, it is our understanding that our values drive our behaviours and our behaviours drive our performance. Fundamentally, if both our pupils and staff, can exhibit the correct actions and attitudes, the score will take care of itself. Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and Strategic Development

 Demonstrate the ability to communicate, influence and inspire netball players and staff, acting as a role model for all pupils within the school and the positive benefits playing netball has on the whole person.

 Be a highly qualified netball coach with the ability to deliver sessions across all age ranges and abilities.

 Have played or coached netball to a high standard which is reflective of the competitive nature of Independent School Sport.

 Have a clear understanding of cultural change on a wide and diverse scale and having the ambition, personality and skills to drive through positive change and cultural standards and behaviours.

 Develop strong links with The Elms (The Junior School to Trent College) to develop a ‘whole school’ development plan for netball.

 Lead, organise and develop a team of coaches, ensuring they have the correct qualifications and receive regular coach development sessions.

 Establish a clear direction for netball within Trent College with associated values and standards through a Development Plan with short, medium and long term goals aligned to that of the Whole School sports programme.

 Ensure there is a shared understanding of goals, objectives and standards of performance by staff, and players aligned with the Whole School sports programme.

 Organise and oversee, in conjunction with team coaches, any pre-season netball, or out of season netball, for all age groups, to facilitate a safe and successful start to a season.

 Ensure entry to tournaments that help to raise the profile of the sport within the school and outside the college.

 To have or create links and involvement within performance pathways, gaining access to high level coaching and assistance with the identification of talented players who could potentially join Trent College.

Coaching

 Have a clear philosophy of coaching and the ability to communicate that to parents, teachers and players throughout the organisation.

 Be the lead coach within the School, establishing a positive games based philosophy that engages all levels of player.

 Organise individual sessions for all players and run development sessions as appropriate with strategic goals and aims.

 Utilise specialist coaches where appropriate, having created excellent links with relevant organisations.

 Demonstrate clear evidence of consultation and discussion with the players and coaching staff regarding player performance and selection.

 Provide accurate and meaningful performance assessments and feedback to players on areas for improvement on a regular and timely basis and monitor player progress throughout the year.

 Maintain exceptional standards of discipline and presentation by staff and players at all times.

Operational Management

 Organise and confirm a suitable set of matches for all year groups and abilities

 Organise entry to National Competitions and appropriate regional and county competitions

 Undertake all logistical arrangements for the netball programme and liaise with the Sports Administrator to ensure these arrangements are in place well in advance.

 Ensure that staff and the school coaching department have the most up to date medical care and that over time, the Trent College netball programme is industry leading, driving standards of best practice.

 Manage the budget for kit and equipment ensuring this is ordered and kept properly.

 Oversee the development of tours in line with the departmental tour strategy that enables pupils to perform to a high level in changing environments.

 Demonstrate an understanding of strength and conditioning and the ability to implement a clear, sustainable and realistic programme to support all netball players within the school, ensuring they are physically ready for the competitive nature of the sport.

Communication

 Provide a weekly plan of organisation for the running of netball to be sent to all staff involved. With clear and strategic weekly objectives that feeds into a longer term vision.

 Ensure effective communication of timetabled sport, extra-curricular practices and match day organisation to pupils, parents and staff.

 To create ‘channels of communication’ between team coaches and specialist staff, with regard to skill development and game understanding needs arising from match days.

 Liaise with all parents across all age groups ensuring they are clear on logistics and engaged in the philosophy and participation of the programme.

 Create and develop links with feeder Schools to give Trent College the best opportunity to be the number one provider of future netball to the prep school market.

 Identify and engage talent (high performing athletes) from outside of the school that may add significant value to the netball programme

 Take responsibility for safeguarding the pupils, including a clear understanding of concussion management.

 Understand the demands of life in a busy Independent Day and Boarding School.

Remuneration

Salary package will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, and includes a generous school fee discount, private medical insurance and complimentary use of the excellent leisure and dining facilities. Accommodation may also be available.
