Deux Nocturnes A` Toi!!! La Solitude Compos´es Pour le Piano par Henri Bertini jeune 1798–1876 Op. 102 Copyright c 2006 by James L. Bailey Non-commercial copying welcome Downloaded from the Werner Icking Music Archive Henri J´erˆome Bertini 1798–1876 Henri J´erˆome Bertini was born in London on October 28, 1798, but his family returned to Paris six months later. He received his early musical education from his father and his brother, a pupil of Clementi. He was considered a child prodigy and at the age of 12 his father took him on a tour of England, Holland, Flanders, and Germany where he was enthusiastically received. After studies in composition in England and Scotland he was appointed professor of music in Brussells but returned to Paris in 1821. It is known that Bertini gave a concert with Franz Liszt in the Salons Pape on April 20, 1828. The program included a transcription by Bertini of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major for eight hands (the other pianists were Sowinsky and Schunke.) He was also admired as a chamber music performer, giving concerts with his friends Fontaine (violin) and Franchomme (cello). He remained active in and around Paris until around 1848 when he retired from the musical scene. In 1859 he moved to Meylan (near Grenoble) where he died on September 30, 1876. Bertini concertized widely but was not as celebrated a virtuoso as either Kalkbrenner or Henri Herz. One of his contempories (Marmontel) described his playing as having Clementi’s evenness and clarity in rapid passages as well as the quality of sound, the manner of phrasing, and the ability to make the instrument sing characteristic of the school of Hummel and Moschel`es.

NICOLÁS RUIZ ESPADERO: A CUBAN ALKAN? by José Raúl López The history of ‘art music’ in Cuba begins in the latter part of the eighteenth century with the liturgical legacy of Esteban Salas (1725–1803) during his tenure at the Santiago de Cuba Cathedral, on the eastern part of the island. The existence of documented musical activity, however, dates back to the years succeeding Columbus’ discovery of the island in 1492. Chronicles describing aboriginal chants and areítos1 prove the existence of musical activities, but they did not leave a durable imprint on Cuba’s musical future, because of the rapid extinction of the native population. In the ensuing centuries, Spanish colonisation introduced both sacred and secular elements that co-existed alongside the oral traditions of African slaves imported to the colony from the 1600s onwards.2 The most notable and rapid development of a native Cuban musical culture occurred in the early nineteenth century, and correlates with the bustling economic activity generated by the Spanish monopolisation of the sugar trade in the Caribbean. On the one hand, the enormous wealth created by sugar barons forged the cultivation of cultural endeavour, as one might expect; on the other, it regimented a socio-economic system that eventually culminated in a profound and irreversible political transfiguration by the end of the century. Politically, as a prelude to eventual independence, Cuba underwent a series of transformations, propelled to varying degrees by such events as the British 1 A term describing an aboriginal communal activity that featured singing and dancing. 2 The institution of slavery differed slightly between the British-American system and the Spanish-Portuguese one, where the possibility of self-emancipation existed to a degree.

Laura Vorachek Reading Music: Representing Female Performance in Nineteenth- Century British Piano Method Books and Novels The editorial content of piano method books published in the nineteenth century contributed to the gendering of the domestic piano by targeting a middle-class female audience. At the same time, these tutorials circumscribed the ability and ambition of female pianists, cautioning women against technical display or performing challenging pieces in company, thereby reinforcing the stereotype of the graceful, demure woman who played a little. However, this effort was complicated by both the tutorials themselves and contemporary fiction. The middle- class women reading these tutorials also read novels—a fact the method books occasionally acknowledge—which often presented a very different picture of women’s musical abilities.

SYSTEMS PLUS COLLEGE FOUNDATION SOCIAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH UNIT INSIGHTS AND OPINIONS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS ON CLASSICAL PIANO INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC By Prof. Jose Maria G. Pelayo III May 2013 SYSTEMS PLUS COLLEGE FOUNDATION MacArthur Highway, Balibago, Angeles City, Philippines 2009 1 SOCIAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH UNIT Prof. Jose Maria G. Pelayo III Social and Psychological Research Coordinator [email protected] SYSTEMS PLUS COLLEGE FOUNDATION SOCIAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH UNIT INTRODUCTION Classical Piano Instrumental Music have been used for meditation hitherto. This study would want to discover the insights and opinions of individuals with no formal musical training and how it may affect their mood, emotions, feelings, imagination, attitude, perception in life and personality. The researcher conducted this study in order to discover if this type of music could be a basis for meditation, relaxation, used for studying, reviewing, contemplation or other purposes. “The kingdom of music is not the kingdom of this world; it will accept those whom breeding and intellect and culture have alike rejected. The commonplace person begins to play, and shoots into the empyrean without effort, whilst we look up, marvelling how he has escaped us, and thinking how we could worship him and love him, would he but translate his visions into human words, and his experiences into human actions. Perhaps he cannot; certainly he does not, or does so very seldom.” 1 Composers usually use the piano when composing songs. Contemporary songwriters have different methods like writing the lyrics first before composing the melody, vice versa or both at the same time. Famous pianist composers from before: BAROQUE PERIOD Early Baroque 1590–1625 High Baroque 1625–1660 Late Baroque 1660–1725 1.

Bailey Non-commercial copying welcome Henri J´erˆome Bertini 1798–1876 Henri J´erˆome Bertini was born in London on October 28, 1798, but his family returned to Paris six months later.
