  • Final Thesis (#5) 18
Niche Publications and Subcultural Authenticity: The case of Stealth magazine David Blight Submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of Bachelor of Arts (MECO), Honours The Department of Media and Communications October 2008 1 ABSTRACT Authenticity is often constructed as an absolute subcultural value. Within the field of subcultural studies, a relatively small amount of literature exists regarding the relationship between different forms of media and subcultural notions of authenticity. Even less literature examines the relationship that individual media texts foster with subcultural niche markets or the internal techniques such publications utilise to discuss authenticity. This thesis aims to address these gaps by performing an in-depth analysis of a Sydney-based hip hop publication, Stealth magazine. The analysis explores how subcultural authenticity is constructed within this publication. In doing so, the nature of authenticity is called into question. 2 DECLARATION I certify that this thesis does not, to the best of my knowledge and belief: i) incorporate without acknowledgement any material previously submitted for a degree or diploma in any institutions of higher education; ii) contain any material previously submitted or written by another person except where due reference is made in the text; or iii) contain any defamatory material Signed: Date: 3 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Firstly, I have to give my undying gratitude to Megan Le Masurier, my supervisor. Without her support and constructive criticism, I would never have asked myself (nor would I have attempted to answer) some of the more difficult questions within this thesis. Her positive attitude gave me a great deal of strength in some of the more stressful times.

Hip hop has indeed evolved into a global phenomenon. This dissertation is grounded in Afro-modern, Afrocentric and African-centered theory and utilizes textual and content analysis. This dissertation offers a panoramic view of pre-hip hop era and hip hop era icons, iconology, archetypes and aesthetics and teases out their influence on hip hop aesthetics. I identify specific figures, movements and events within the context of African American and American folk and popular culture traditions and link them to developments within hip hop culture, iconography, and aesthetics. Chapter 1 provides an introduction, which includes a definition of terms, statement of the problem and literature review. It also offers a perfunctory discussion of hip hop
