  • Hydrological Impact of a Tidal Regulator on Land and on Water in a Tropical Estuary of Kerala, India
Nature Environment and Pollution Technology Vol. 8 No. 4 pp. 627-634 2009 An International Quarterly Scientific Journal Original Research Paper Hydrological Impact of a Tidal Regulator on Land and on Water in a Tropical Estuary of Kerala, India E. Shaji Department of Geology, University of Kerala, Kariavattom, Trivandrum-695 581, Kerala, India ABSTRACT Key Words: Saline intrusion An opportunity to study the effects of artificial structures like tidal regulators on the Tidal regulator near-shore environment is provided by the manually operated tidal regulator constructed Sand bar across a man-made canal in an estuarine environment in the tropical climatic setting of Backwaters the southern coastal State of Kerala in India. The regulator was constructed across a Tidal barrages Paravoor man-made canal at Pozhikkara in 1957 to control the salt water intrusion into Paravoor estuary Kayal (Kayal = back water or estuary) and to protect a natural estuary. This protection was originally being afforded by a feature locally known as ‘Pozhi’, which is in fact a natural sand bar occurring along the coast separating backwaters from the sea during the summer, but allowing the sea and the backwater to merge by its erosion during the monsoon. This natural sandbar, thus, protected the Paravoor estuary from sea water ingress from the Lakshadweep sea (of the Indian Ocean) during the summer season. When a situation, where the natural sandbar could not protect the estuary and the inland paddy crops from saline water ingress arose, the concept of an artificial tidal regulator was evolved by the farmers of the Ithikara Ela (Ela = paddy field).

VINOD IN ENADIMANGALAM VILLAGE, ADOOR TALUK, PATHANAMTHITTA DISTRICT, KERALA STATE 1. INTRODUCTION ABOUT THE PROJECT/PROPONENT The proposal is for Building Stone Quarry Unit of Mr. S. Vinod in Survey No 340/1/103/2 (P), 340/1/103/3 (P) & 340/1/104 (P) over an extent of 0.6010 Hectare in Enadimangalam Village, Adoor Taluk, Pathanamthitta District, and Kerala State. Building stone is a key and basic ingredient for the construction of infrastructure projects which is a specialized job involving high degree of safety and statutory compliance besides being carried out by qualified mining personnel. The Project Proponent is a private individual. The main objective to be pursued by the applicant is to carry the business of prospecting, exploring, operating and working on mines and quarries. The main market for Building stone is in nearby towns and will be utilized in construction works of buildings and roads. Environmental Management Plan (EMP) aims at the conservation of ecological system by considering in-built pollution abatement facilities at the proposed quarry site. Sustainable development in the project area needs to be intervened with judicious utilization of non-renewable resources of the project area and within the limits of permissible capacity. The assimilative capacity of the project area is the maximum amount of pollution load that can be discharged in the environment without affecting the designated use and is governed by dilution, dispersion and removal due to physico-chemical and biological processes. The EMP is required to ensure sustainable development in the project area of 5 Km radius of the proposed quarry site under study; hence it needs to have a plan for encompassing the proposed activity.

  • Kollam // Report on Solid Waste Along the Coastline of Kerala
SOLO WOMAN WALK-BATAPADY BEACH TO KANYAKUMARI-850+ KM-OCTOBER 5TH 2019 TO DECEMBER 6TH 2019-K2K THE COASTAL WALK Solid Waste Across the Coastline of Kerala JANET ORLENE | KOLLAM On October 5th, 2019, Janet Orlene set out on a solo coastline walk from Batapady beach near the border of Kerala to Kanyakumari. Backed by a team of 2, Pradeep Rajendran and Meghana Basavaraju, Janet covered the entire strip of coast meeting the unique terrains, people and solid waste patterns of Kerala. *This report has not been formally edited.* | 4th July 2020 | Authored by Janet Orlene Report on Solid Waste along the coastline of Kerala - Kollam 1 Introduction What I expected to see was completely different from what I saw. I expected to find a lot more sanitary napkins, thin plastic bags, more obvious chemical pollution and other textbook things that I’ve learnt all my life. Instead, the largest quantities of solid waste turned out to be in the form of slippers and shoes, plastic water bottles, diapers, medical waste and household waste. The chemicals I saw polluting the ocean were in the form of thin oily surfaces (often near ferries and the shipbreaking yards), mining wastes, sewage, etc. This journey through all of the most beautiful coastal landscapes Kerala had to offer was an eyeopener in terms of human activity caused destruction. The coastline is one of the most powerful indicators of the human-caused environmental crisis. What this report aims to show are the observations I made during the walk down the coastline of Kerala. Note: *Although not mentioned otherwise, one of the largest polluters across Kerala shore are diapers.
