April 25 - April 28, 2019 Hope Is Here - Anger GETTING STARTED Where is hope when you are angry? We often have misplaced hope when angry. We hope for bad things to happen to people. We hope for revenge. We hope for punishment. We hope to get the upper hand. We hope to hurt people. These false hopes drive out the real hope of that is here. In your anger do not sin. Anger happens, but we can respond to anger instead of reacting in anger. Do not hold onto anger. You do not need it. It does not help you. Anger will destroy you from the inside out. Feeding our anger gives the Devil a foothold in our lives. It provides an anchor point for him to work his lies and to use us to hurt others. Plan to over-respond to anger instead of over-reacting in anger. Jesus invites us to be generous, kind and gracious to those who anger us. These are super-natural responses to anger that bring the hope of Jesus into hurtful situations. Forgiveness destroys anger. When we have forgiving hearts, anger cannot control us. We are free to enjoy the hope of Jesus and to share His hope with everyOne. PERSONAL REFLECTION 1. What are three things that make you angry? 2. What is it about those things that make you angry? 3. What are some ways that people sin when they experience anger? 4. Who can you forgive today? What’s stopping you? “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. Ephesians 4:26-27 Ask God to reveal any anger that lingers in your heart. Seriously…ask Him right now. Be still. Listen. Ask for courage, strength and power to forgive. Our hope is that Jesus can deliver us from anger MEMORY VERSE: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Brentnall Introduction Augustine of Hippo (354-430), the great ‘Church Father’ from whose writings Luther and Calvin contributed so much to the Reformation, “never wrote what could be called a treatise on prayer.” (Thomas Hand) His nearest approach to an extended treatment of the subject - a letter to a wealthy noble widow who had sought his advice - merely delineates the kind of people we must be in order to pray acceptably, and develops a few valuable suggestions on prayer that are useful for the Christian’s journey towards the full enjoyment of God. His Expositions on the Psalms, though not specifically a study of prayer, throw much light on how Christ and His Church express their union and communion through prayer, and how believers may make the psalmists’ prayers their own. The Confessions weave in and out of prayer so much that they may be justly regarded as one prolonged prayer; yet they offer no direct teaching on the subject. For their part, the Sermons, Soliloquies, Treatises, Letters and Retractations cast up many valuable thoughts on prayer, not to mention some priceless gems in the form of particular prayers offered to God by Augustine himself; but they too offer no systematic treatment. In view of this absence, perhaps the most we can distill from the vast and varied array of available material is “not a system or method” of prayer, but “a general orientation with recurrent themes and characteristic emphases.” (Rebecca Weaver) What we can distill, however, may well revolutionize our whole view and practice of prayer.

QUESTION 20 Despair We next have to consider the vices opposed to hope: first, despair (desperatio) (question 20) and, second, presumption (praesumptio) (question 21). On the first topic there are four questions: (1) Is despair a sin? (2) Can despair exist without unbelief? (3) Is despair the greatest of sins? (4) Does despair arise from listlessness (acedia)? Article 1 Is despair a sin? It seems that despair is not a sin (desperatio not sit peccatum): Objection 1: As is clear from Augustine in De Libero Arbitrio, every sin involves turning toward some changeable good, combined with turning away from the unchangeable good. But despair does not involve turning toward any changeable good. Therefore, it is not a sin. Objection 2: What arises from a good root does not seem to be a sin, since, as Matthew 7:18 says, “A good tree cannot bring produce bad fruits.” But despair seems to proceed from a good root, viz., fear of God, or horror at the magnitude of one’s sins. Therefore, despair is not a sin. Objection 3: If despair were a sin, then, in the case of the damned, their despairing would be a sin. But this is not imputed to them as a sin (non imputatur eis ad culpam); instead, it is imputed to their being damned. Therefore, it is not imputed as a sin to those who are in this life, either (neque viatoribus imputatur ad culpam). And so despair is not a sin. But contrary to this: That through which men are induced to sin seems to be not only a sin, but a principle of sins.

APRIL 2019 College and University Basic Needs Insecurity: A National #RealCollege Survey Report AUTHORS: Sara Goldrick-Rab, Christine Baker-Smith, Vanessa Coca, Elizabeth Looker and Tiffani Williams Executive Summary NEARLY 86,000 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED. THE RESULTS The #RealCollege survey is the nation’s largest annual INDICATE: assessment of basic needs security among college students. The survey, created by the Hope Center • 45% of respondents were food for College, Community, and Justice (Hope Center), insecure in the prior 30 days specifically evaluates access to affordable food and housing. Sermon for Sunday, October 4, 2020 - “Hope and Humility’ Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Decorah, Iowa Rev. Amy Zalk Larson Click here to read scripture passages for the day. Beloved of God grace to you and peace in the name of Jesus. This week, my husband Matt and I got to have a physically distanced gathering with some friends from Oregon who have a family home in Decorah. Since they were coming to our porch, I brought out some wine to serve them; but it was nowhere near as good as the amazing wine from Oregon they brought over. The gift of good friends, good wine and good conversation was so nurturing to me this week. That time and our readings today also got me thinking about what brings about good grapes and good wine both literally and metaphorically. Both our first reading and our Gospel reading today consider that question and bring us into vineyards. In Isaiah we hear God’s people described as a vineyard. God plants and tends and nurtures and provides for the vineyard. God expects it to bear good fruit, the good grapes of justice and righteousness. Yet, instead of an abundant and pleasant harvest, God sees the wild grapes of violence, arrogance and bloodshed. Jesus tells a parable about tenants in God’s vineyard. They begin to think that they are entitled to all that the vineyard pro- duces, that they can do whatever they want with it. They become greedy, arrogant, violent. These readings hit awfully close to home these days.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1817-1818) “Hope is the theological virtue by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ’s promises and relying not on our own strength, but the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit…. The virtue of hope responds to the aspiration of happiness which God has placed in the heart of every man; it takes up the hopes that inspire man’s activities and purifies them and orders them to the Kingdom of heaven; it keeps man from discouragement; it sustains him during times of abandonment; it opens up his heart in expectation of eternal beatitude. Buoyed up by hope, he is preserved from selfishness and led to happiness that flows from charity.” Hope is the motivating force behind our goals in life. What our hope is will find itself exposed by our priorities and actions. It helps us set priorities and determine what is worthy of our time, energy, and resources. Hope is shown in where we place our true trust. It is telling that sins against the virtue of hope are handled under sins against the 1st Commandments (you have no other gods) in the Catechism. Who do you trust? Hope betrays where our hopes are. If hope is not developed by God, we will find our hopes oriented toward the things of this world.

Abstract The study set out to integrate collective action models and emphasize the role of emotions. Whereas the importance of anger is indisputable, relatively little attention has been paid to the role of positive emotions, such as hope, in collective action research. Hence, the aim of the study was to explore the role of hope and anger as drivers of participation and involvement in collective mobilizations. A cross-sectional field study (N = 638) conducted right after the emergence of the 15-M socio-political protest movement in Spain assessed the emotions and beliefs of both demonstrators and those who took no part in the active mobilization. We hypothesized that anger and hope would sequentially mediate the relationship between collective action frames and participation in collective action. Furthermore, to test this premise, we ran two alternative sequential mediation models based on the social identity model of collective action (SIMCA) and the encapsulated model of social identity in collective action (EMSICA), but with emotions as mediators between collective action frames and intensity of participation.
