Dear friends,

I hope you are doing well during this winter start.

I was so pleased to hear about the announcement of the third phase of opening in

Mauritius as from July 1st. It gives hope to people and most importantly to the economy. It is paramount that the world economy starts running as usual.

Last Saturday, I was pleased to attend the ceremony for the presentation of the

Mauritian delegation to the Tokyo Olympic Games. I extended my very warm welcome to the delegation to Tokyo. I was motivated by their zeal to participate in this event. I reassured them that the Japanese authorities are doing everything in their capacities to ensure safe and secure environments for all athletes and participants coming from around the world.

Japan has a very low rate of infection and is as safe as . Moreover, provides the best medical health assistance anytime and in all cases. I wish that Mauritian athletes perform their best and get medals.

For Japan, organising such an important event during this pandemic situation is a symbol of hope and encouragement to the world. Japan wants to set a precedence that no matter how hard the situation can be, there is still light at the end of the tunnel and this big event will happen with the utmost safety of each and every one. Coaches and athletes have been preparing for this moment endlessly and this hard work could not be deprived its reward.

Dear Friends,

In the context of the inoculation activity being carried out throughout the world and to ensure a fair access to vaccines to many countries, the Japanese Prime Minister SUGA

Yoshihide virtually co-hosted the ‘Gavi COVAX Advance Market Commitment Summit’ with

José Manuel Barroso, board chair at Gavi, on June 2nd this year.

The Prime Minister, Honourable Pravind Jugnauth also participated in the summit.

He called for the timely and fair access to vaccines and medicines to overcome this pandemic. During this summit, governments and the private sector announced their willingness to provide vaccines to eligible countries. The summit allowed to raise additional funding to secure beyond the target vaccines for developing countries by the end of 2021.

Mauritius also committed its contribution towards COVAX Facility and Japan highly appreciates this gesture of solidarity. Japan pledged the largest amount of $800 million in addition to its previous financial contribution of $200 million making a total of one $1 billion to the COVAX Facility.

In conclusion, I wish you good health and trust you will continue to keep safe.

Sincerely,

KAWAGUCHI Shuichiro Ambassador of Japan to Mauritius
