Over the weekend of April 13th and 14th, the San Luis Yacht Club in partnership with Hobie Fleet 259 hosted our annual Hobie Days Regatta. The regatta welcomed multi- boats and their crew from across California. The regatta kicked off with sailors arriving for the Friday night social and enjoying Avila’s first Farmers Market of the season. The event was lead by club members Scott and Kathy Erwin along with Thomas Sinnickson, Brittany Tomasko, Chris Barrett, and Reid Hester. Saturday morning, excitement was in the air as sailors hoisted their brightly colored sails on the Old Port Beach and headed out for a day of races off the Cal Poly Pier. The race committee was Photo-Studio 101 West lead both days by PRO Leanne Drummond and assisted by Terry San Filippo. The San Luis Yacht Club power boat was used as a chase boat on Saturday and was skippered by Pat Mullen and crewed by new SLYC member, Tim Harmon. SLYC Power Fleet Captain Dave Lipanovich and his wife, SLYC Director Colleen Lipanovich skippered their own power boat for Sunday’s Races to set race marks and provide support out on the race course. Thank you also to Shannon Donahue for providing lunches on both days of racing and to new members Cindy and Jon McKeller for helping on race committee on Sunday. Three classes were sailed including Hobie 16, Hobie 18 and Weta’s. The winner of the Hobie 16 races was Ben Brown a young sailor Photo-Studio 101 West from the Bay Area who recently dominated in his college racing circuit. The winner of the Hobie 18 races are club member Thomas Sinnickson and his crew Will Bellis. Winning the Weta fleet was Christoph Allie another bay area sailor.

“Try Tri Again” Reid Hester, Director SLYC

Since a more detailed report is published elsewhere in this Foghorn, I thought I’d contribute my perspective as a racer on our Weta , “Try Tri Again” (https://www.wetamarine.com). First, hats off to Leanne Drummond and her Race Committee. They performed admirably and professionally both on and off the water. Some of you may have noticed me ducking out of the Opening Day ceremonies after being introduced as a new Director this year. But, hey, Photo-Studio 101 West there’s racing to be done. As is often the case the first race was delayed while the wind filled in but I still wasn’t able to make the start of it as the wind was even lighter when I needed to get off of Hobie Beach. That was just as well though as I was really tired from having flown in from DC the night before and getting home after midnight. And I attribute my DFL finish on the second race to that and not having been on the boat for 18 months. I know, excuses, excuses. Sunday though was a different story. I was rested and got my groove back. With good starts and decent up and downwind speed, I managed to pull off a 2nd place in the first race and a 3rd place in the second race (beaten out for 2nd by 5”). I was pleased with that. I have to say, the Weta is a joy to sail and far more stable than Hobie Cats IMHO (and we’ve owned 4 Hobies over the years). Surfing swells downwind and heading up to gain speed then carrying it downwind as speed picks up is a blast. Be forewarned though, boat speed is addictive (11.7kts max on Sun). And Wetas can be raced or cruised single handed or double handed.

“Where's the Burgee?” Colleen Lipanovich, Director SLYC Dave and I saw an interesting idea at the South Lake Tahoe yacht club! It was a section of their newsletter called “Where’s the Burgee” where members of their club were featured holding up their burgee in different locations around the world. We would like to implement something like that in our club. I am sure there are some world travelers out there! To start us off, Dave and I have an example of Where’s the Burgee from Lake Tahoe last year (photo on left). Please submit your photos to me, Colleen Lipanovich, at [email protected] with a short description of where you are. I will put together an article for future Foghorn Newsletters so those of us with jobs can live vicariously through you! If you have any questions please email me at the above address.
