Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis explores the transmission of information about classical inscriptions and their use in historical scholarship between 1530 and 1603. It aims to demonstrate that antiquarians' approach to one form of material non-narrative evidence for the ancient world reveals a developed sense of history, and that this approach can be seen as part of a more general interest in expanding the subject matter of history and the range of sources with which it was examined. It examines the milieu of the men who studied inscriptions, arguing that the training and intellectual networks of these men, as well as the need to secure patronage and the constraints of printing, were determining factors in the scholarship they undertook. It then considers the first collections of inscriptions that aimed at a comprehensive survey, and the systems of classification within these collections, to show that these allowed scholars to produce lists and series of features in the ancient world; the conventions used to record inscriptions and what scholars meant by an accurate transcription; and how these conclusions can influence our attitude to men who reconstructed or forged classical material in this period.

    A Playful Invention: Agostino Carracci’s Bacchus with Goat in the Louvre Cyril Gerbrony AN INTRIGUING DRAWING PRESERVED in the Cabinet des arts graphiques of the Louvre Museum, executed in pen and ink, represents Bacchus holding a wine cup and accompanied by a goat (fig. 1). The drawing presents two lacunae, which appear to be the result of ink corrosion: one at the level of the god’s genitalia, and a less important one in the goat’s left leg. An etching by Count de Caylus (fig. 2) provides evidence not only that the drawing was of interest to this French antiquarian but, more critically, that it was in Paris by the first half of the eighteenth century and can be dated before 1728.1 As indicated by an inscription at the bottom left of the etching, Caylus attributes the drawing to Annibale Carracci. To date, this drawing has been studied only by Catherine Loisel, who alludes to it in a brief notice in her major inventory of drawings by Ludovico, Agostino, and Annibale Carracci Translated by Maude Vanhaelen and revised by Mary Vaccaro and Maude Vanhaelen, in memory of our dear friend. Narratives and representations of myriad texts, maps, objects, and images produced between 1450 and 1700 reveal a vision of a world where Mexico really was India, North America was an extension of China, South America was populated by a variety of biblical and Asian sites, and American cul- tural productions and ethnographic features colored conceptions of Asia. While the Amerasian imaginary was later suppressed by Eurocentric and colonialist narratives, here we consider various representations of Amerasia in order to bring it back into vis- ibility. Doing so reveals various forms of mirroring at play, permitting us to understand one of the mechanisms by which Europeans assimilated a dizzying array of new knowl- edge to their pre-existing conceptual order, and also offering insights into early modern European conceptions of global geography and modernity. ABSTRACT This thesis presents a new reconstruction and interpretation of the ideological programmes at the Villa d’Este in Tivoli, devised by Pirro Ligorio for Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este from 1560 to 1572. It traces the sixteenth-century visitor’s progress through the garden, where a sculptural pantheon of classical deities and demigods located within mythically allusive settings transformed the visitor’s journey into a lushly storyboarded experience, reconfiguring the garden as a site of mythic encounter. Investigating the intersection between the visitor’s symbolic and sensory modes of experience at the Villa d’Este, this thesis pioneers a new approach to Italian Renaissance garden design, synthesising traditional interpretative approaches to iconography with innovative phenomenological methodologies from sensory anthropology and recent ecocritical perspectives on landscape in the Cinquecento.
