Celebrating Fram, forward into the future from July 9, 2009-September 1, 2010 District 2 Sons of Norway local lodges in Alaska, Oregon, Idaho, and Washington honor our 100th Anniversary by learning about Norwegian and/or Norwegian American culture and heritage through the Sons of Norway Cultural Skills Program and sharing this rich culture in their communities; local history projects; exercising more by walking, biking, and running sometimes even to Norway; and sharing their amazing generosity with their neighbors. Sol-Land Lodge 2-086 in Kennewick WA Walk to Bergen Challenge http://www.sol-land.org/bergen.htm 9/18/2009: We Did it! 4500 miles total! Website includes a walker showing progress. Sol-land Lodge succeeded in walking from Kennewick to Bergen in one year. We needed 4100 miles and walked about 4500! Congratulations everyone! We will have a small celebration at the October 2009 meeting. Sol-land Lodge had a "Walk to Bergen" challenge in honor of District 2s 100th anniversary in 2010. Our challenge was to walk, bike or swim as a group, the 4100 miles between Kennewick and Bergen in one year. The challenge started August 19, 2008. Here were the rules for our Walk to Bergen challenge: • You can use any activity that can be measured in mileage: walking, running, cycling, swimming, etc. • If you choose to earn one of the sports medals at the same time—such as Gangmerke, Sykkelmerke or Idrettsmerke—the mileage counts for both. For instance, if you walk 2 miles in a day, you can put 2 miles on your Gangmerke mileage log and 2 miles toward the walk to Bergen. • The total miles (4100) is for the whole lodge, so everyone participating need only do the best they can and we will add up everyone’s miles and apply them to the total. If you have any other questions, please contact DJ Watson (628-3391 – [email protected]) Norden Lodge 2-002 in Tacoma WA Our lodge is donating monies for 100 meals to feed people at the Tacoma Rescue Mission for the December Christmas dinner. We are also encouraging all persons to walk 100 miles from now until May 2010. In addition, we donated $100.00 to the Tacoma Peace Prize, $100.00 to the food bank, and collected 100 items plus for the food bank. Hope this helps with your 100 “something” theme. We will bring packages of new socks to our April and May meetings, and when we have 100 pair we will donate them to the Klamath Falls Gospel Mission. • Since we live in potato country, during the fall harvest we will donate 100 pounds of potatoes to the Klamath-Lake County Food Bank. • For our annual Christmas giving community project, we will prepare a food basket for a needy family. We will spend $100 from Roald Lodge funds for staples and other items will be donated by lodge members. • Christmas Bazaar at the fairgrounds: • Members will use more than 100 potatoes to make lefse to sell from our booth at the two day Community Christmas Bazaar. • Members will bake more than 200 Scandinavian cookies to sell from our booth. • One of our members will demonstrate how to make krumkake in our booth. We will sell 100 or more. The money raised at the bazaar is used for lodge expenses, community-giving, and to help with expenses to send delegates to the District 2 Convention. Community Volunteers Hours: • Before Memorial Day, members will help the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization place flags on the graves of veterans, and will help take the flags off after Memorial Day. • Members will be volunteering their time from Memorial Day through Labor Day to be greeters at the historic 3-story Baldwin Hotel Museum. The museum is open Tuesday- Saturday from 10AM-4PM, and members will choose the days best for them to help out. • In October, we will have a booth at the Merrill Potato Festival. The small town of Merrill is 15 miles from Klamath Falls. We will offer free coffee to those who stop at our booth. We like to show the rural towns in our area Sons of Norway supports their community events. We also hope to gain new members through these volunteer activities. • We will have our Viking Ship in the Snowflake Festival evening parade in December. The parade committee works hard to decorate the ship according to the theme of the parade for the year. We have won first place in the “Organization Category” the last two years and many years prior. Our participation not only gives Sons of Norway Roald Lodge 2-039 exposure, it also shows we support community events. We are hoping to include a combination of photos, writings and video. Should be a fun project for the kids to take on.
