January 2021 Climate Summary for West Central and Southwest Florida January 2021 Climate Summary for West Central and Southwest Florida The big story for January 2021 was the dry weather. We saw a few cold fronts move across the region bringing some showers and a few thunderstorms, but overall it was a rather dry month. Rainfall totals across the area were less than 50 percent of normal, with some locations less than 10 percent of normal. However, this is not that extraordinary as winter is generally the drier time of the year, but several of the official climate sites did make it into the Top Ten Driest. Overall, the average temperatures for the month were about 1.5°F below normal to 2.5°F above normal with none of the official climate sites placing in the Top Ten Warmest or Coldest. Adkins Account Books, 1909-1948, chronicle and reflect the operation of the general merchandise store of W. M. Adkins in Erin, Houston County, Tennessee. The collection was obtained through the agency of Miss Louise Davis, Children’s Museum, Nashville, Tennessee. The collection occupies 2.1 linear feet of shelf space and number 150 items and 12 volumes. There are no restrictions on the materials and single photocopies of unpublished writings may be made for purposes of scholarly or individual research. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection of accounts and account books is for the general merchandise store of William M. Adkins in Erin, Tennessee, for the dates 1909-1948. It is composed of twelve volumes of account books and approximately 150 items. The volumes contain inventory lists, daily accounts of sales, and payments received in cash and produce. The account books reflect that the store carried a great variety of merchandise, examples of which range from hardware to groceries, dry-goods, ready-to-wear, wire and cheese. There are some bills, notes, and receipts that include accounts for the schooling of Hubert Fulton Adkins at the John Locke School which later became the Morton Elliott Junior College located at Elkton, Kentucky. Hubert graduated at the Morton Elliott Junior College in 1922. He attended, for a short time, Southwestern Presbyterian University, Clarksville, Tennessee. Some business and personal correspondence for the years 1915-1962 make up the remainder of the collection.

    1911-1920 The Twelfth Decade Overview The twelfth decade was one of several significant developments and events. After 82 years as a Village, Batavia became a City. Batavia came to have its first City Hall. The police department for the first time had its own building. Also for the first time, there were full-time paid firemen. The community finally had a sewer system and sewage treatment plant. The municipal water system was upgraded and a water filtration plant added. And, as was the case with other cities across the Country, Batavia felt the impact of World War I. Batavia’s population continued to grow rapidly. The number of residents reached 13,541 in 1920 (“Genesee County Information,” Richmond Memorial Library, online, accessed 3 January 2014). This was an increase of 1,928 individuals since 1910. In the view of the author, this decade may be regarded as Batavia’s “golden age.” Main Street still had most of its mansions. A large number of the major manufacturing concerns that defined Batavia were in place. The housing in the City was still mainly single-family homes. Retail activity was almost entirely in a centralized “downtown.” A trolley ran the length of Main Street and the Tonawanda Creek was a major recreational attraction that drew crowds on summer weekends. 1: Infrastructure As indicated in the last chapter, work on constructing sewers began in December of 1909. The layout resulted in all of the sewage being conveyed to a central station at the Municipal Building at 3 West Main Street. As of July in 1911, the work on the sewers was well along.

    November and Autumn (Sep/Oct/Nov) 2020 Climate Summary During the first few days of November 2020 a cold front swept across the area bringing some cooler more comfortable conditions. However, this was short lived as the high pressure that brought these conditions moved off the southeast U.S. coast setting up a rather breezy, warm and humid east to southeast flow. During the second week Tropical Cyclone Eta moved north toward south Florida and then turned west across the Florida Keys and out into the southeast Gulf of Mexico. However, during the 10th and 11th it turned back north northeast moving just off the west coast of Florida and into the Nature Coast across northeast Florida on the 12th. Behind this system the warm and humid conditions persisted into the third week when another cold front moved through bringing a return to some drier air, but temperatures remained a few degrees above normal through the end of the month.     COLORADO GOVERNORS John F. Shafroth Scope and Content Note The John F. Shafroth Collection comprises approximately 30 cubic feet of records and 3 rolls of microfilm spanning his term as Governor from 1909-1913. Major record series included in the collection are correspondence; the Executive Record; applications and appointments; reports; extraditions and requisitions; and proclamations. His 1909 inaugural address exists in the collection as well as an M.A. Thesis by J.W. Dickson III, "Progressivism in Colorado: The Administrative Reform of John F. Shafroth," 1975. Records concerning the appointments that Shafroth made to various state offices are voluminous in the "applications and appointments" series. The operations of the state agencies are also well documented through correspondence and reports. Shafroth's elec tion reform measures may be tracked through his Inaugural Address, the Executive Record, correspondence concerning bills and other legislative matters, and proclamations, while his support of irrigation and conservation projects is docume nted well through correspondence and other series. Biography The man who earned the title "Honest John" in Colorado politics served in the United States House of Representatives from 1895 to 1903, as Governor of Colorado from 1909 to 1913, and in the United States Senate from 1913 to 1919. He was born at Fayette, Missouri, on June 9, 1854. He attended the public schools of Fayette and then went to the University of Michigan where he graduated in 1875, having earned a law degree. He returned to Fayette and became a law partner there until 1879, when he decided to move to Denver. He married Virginia Morrison in 1881 and they raised a family of five children.
