Der heutige Tag beginnt schon im Morgengrauen. Nach dem Frühstück im Hotel bringt Dich der Tag Shuttle Service zum Domestic Terminal am Flughafen von Kathmandu. Es herrscht bereits geschäftiges Treiben, denn von hier aus werden mit Inlandsflügen die verschiedensten Regionen Nepals angeflogen. Ein spezieller Service unserer Partneragentur garantiert Dir einen der ersten Flüge des Tages nach Lukla, dem berühmten Ausgangspunkt des Everest Base Camp Trails, was bei der vorherrschenden Wetterlage von entscheidendem Vorteil sein kann. Der ca. 45 minütige Flug in einer der kleinen Hochdeckermaschinen ist schlichtweg atemberaubend: besonders faszinierend sind die vorbeiziehenden eisgepanzerten Himalayariesen, wobei die kühne Pyramide des Gauri Shankar (7.134m) besonders herausragt. Für „Neulinge“ wird auch die Landung auf der 12% geneigten Landebahn des Flugplatzes in Lukla besonders unvergesslich sein. Jetzt kann das wirkliche große Abenteuer beginnen: Hier triffst Du Deine Crew, bestehend aus Sherpa Guide (Sirdar) und Träger(n). Der Trek an diesem ersten Tag ist kurz und dient der Akklimatisation und Eingewöhnung, denn Lukla liegt immerhin schon 2.840m hoch. Zuerst geht es kurz bergab, um über einen kurzen Umweg das malerische Scherpadorf Chaurikharka zu besuchen, wo viele unserer Sherpa Guides wohnen. Weiter geht es dann wieder auf der Hauptroute, das eng eingeschnittene Tal des wild schäumenden Dudh Koshi Flusses entlang. Besonders unvergesslich wird dabei der Blick auf den ersten Himalayariesen, den kirchturmsteilen Kusum Kanguru (6.367m), der hoch über der Schlucht aufragt, sein. Bald ist jetzt das erste Etappenziel erreicht: Eine große Hängebrücke führt in das kleine Dorf Phakding (2.630m), welches direkt am Dudh Koshi Fluss liegt. inlandsflug; Trek: 4 Stunden; 400 Höhenmeter Aufstieg 04. Die erste Hälfte dieses Trekkingtages ist geprägt von der Wanderung entlang des Dudh Koshi Tag Flusses, der mehrfach auf luftigen Hängebrücken überquert wird. Kurz nach den Lodges von Monjo (2.835m) passiert man den Checkpoint am Eingang des Sagarmatha Nationalparks, einem UNESCO Weltnaturerbe. Jetzt geht es nochmals kurz den Fluss entlang, bis am Zusammenfluss von Dudh Koshi und Bothe Koshi der Talgrund verlassen und der steile Anstieg nach Namche Bazar in Angriff genommen wird. Gleich zu Beginn wartet mit der Überschreitung der neuen Hillary Bridge, einer der höchsten Hängebrücken Nepals, ein besonderer Höhepunkt. Danach bist Du gut beraten, die vielen steilen Serpentinen durch die Kieferwälder hinauf nach Namche Bazar langsam anzugehen. Viele Trekker, die genau dieses Wegstück zu schnell erklommen haben, mussten in der Folge ihren Trek mit Höhenkrankheit abbrechen. Wenig später stehst Du dann inmitten des quirligen Hauptortes der Sherpas, dessen große Steinhäuser, einem natürlichen Amphitheater gleich, pittoresk im Halbrund an steilen Hängen errichtet wurden. Unser Tipp: Am späten Nachmittag wird noch genügend Zeit für einen ausgiebigen Spaziergang bleiben. Steige einfach ca. 250 Höhenmeter auf, z.B. zum Besucherzentrum des Nationalparks. Eine Taktik („climb high, sleep low“), die Deine Akklimatisation aktiv unterstützen wird. Trek: 6 Stunden; 900 Höhenmeter Aufstieg 05. Heute steht ein aktiver Akklimatisationstag am Programm. Dieser Tag ist für den weiteren Verlauf Tag Deiner Trekkingtour von entscheidender Bedeutung und darf aus höhenmedizinischen Gründen nicht eingespart werden. Wobei es in und rund um Namche Bazar viel zu entdecken gibt. Für eine aktive Akklimatisation schlagen wir die folgende, abwechslungsreiche Wanderung vor: Aufstieg über Zaroc und den Hubschrauberlandeplatz Syangboche zum Höhenrücken (3.850m) oberhalb eines kleinen Passes. Der Ausblick auf Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam und viele weitere grandiose Gipfel ist schlichtweg atemberaubend. Nun geht es, vorbei an der Hillary Schule, in das zauberhaft gelegene Dorf Khumjung (3.780m), wo abseits der

    Tourism and Development in Nepal Stan Stevens Introduction The great wall of mountains that marks the frontier between South and Central Asia has often presented through the centuries a major barrier to travel, restricting the movement of people, goods, and ideas to a few key routes that are at best only seasonally practicable. But, although the ruggedness of its landscapes presented often fonrnidable difficulties of passage, this arc of the Himalaya, Karakorum, and Hindu Kush ranges has for millennia been traversed by armies and refugees, traders and migrants, emissaries and pilgrims. Across the high passes have marched Greek armies under Alexander, Mongol hordes under Genghiz Khan and Tamerlane, British forces mov- ing on Lhasa, and Chinese armies invading Nepal and India. Indian merchants carrying goods and Buddhism to the Sinkiang oases and beyond to China have found their way through the peaks, as have Silk Road caravans transporting Chinese goods west as early as the days of the Roman Empire. Marco Polo passed this way, and Hin- dus on pilgrimage to Mount Kailas in Tibet have continued to do so for untold centuries, as have Tibetans and Chinese on pilgrimage to India.     Stephen Slemon Climbing Mount Everest Postcolonialism in the Culture of Ascent It scarcely needs saying that "Mount Everest" is «oí just "there."1 As just about every book on Himalayas mountaineering likes to point out, "Mount Everest" was hoisted into physical—and cultural— ascendency through a prodigious act of imperial technology: the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India.2 Mount Everest began as a theodolite mea- surement taken from a hundred miles away in 1847; it became a notation called "Peak XV" within an archive of survey records which reproduced the Indian subcontinent (or at least the parts the British could get at) as a vast grid of measured, criss-crossing triangles; five years later these measurements passed into the hands of two rows of mathematicians, or "computers" as they were called, seated at a long table in Calcutta, who refigured them through logarithm into the measurement of "29,002 ft."3 After this legend sets in.4 The chief computer, Radhanath Sickdhar, is said to have sent a message to the Surveyor General of India, Colonel Andrew Waugh, saying "Sir, I have discovered the highest mountain in the world" (Krakauer Into Thin Air 13; Bilham 26). Colonel Waugh reported to the Royal Geographical Society in London: "here is a mountain, most probably the highest in the world, with- out any local name that we can discover, or whose native appellation, if it have any, will not very likely be ascertained before we are allowed to penetrate into Nepaul [sic] and to approach close to this stupendous snowy mass." Waugh therefore proposed that Peak XV be named "after his respected chief and predecessor in office," Colonel George Everest.
