And the Hamitic Hypothesis
religions Article Ancient Egyptians in Black and White: ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ and the Hamitic Hypothesis Justin Michael Reed Department of Biblical Studies, Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY 40205, USA; [email protected] Abstract: In this essay, I consider how the racial politics of Ridley Scott’s whitewashing of ancient Egypt in Exodus: Gods and Kings intersects with the Hamitic Hypothesis, a racial theory that asserts Black people’s inherent inferiority to other races and that civilization is the unique possession of the White race. First, I outline the historical development of the Hamitic Hypothesis. Then, I highlight instances in which some of the most respected White intellectuals from the late-seventeenth through the mid-twentieth century deploy the hypothesis in assertions that the ancient Egyptians were a race of dark-skinned Caucasians. By focusing on this detail, I demonstrate that prominent White scholars’ arguments in favor of their racial kinship with ancient Egyptians were frequently burdened with the insecure admission that these ancient Egyptian Caucasians sometimes resembled Negroes in certain respects—most frequently noted being skin color. In the concluding section of this essay, I use Scott’s film to point out that the success of the Hamitic Hypothesis in its racial discourse has transformed a racial perception of the ancient Egyptian from a dark-skinned Caucasian into a White person with appearance akin to Northern European White people. List of films considered the best From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Redirected from Films considered the greatest ever) Page semi-protected This list needs additional citations for verification. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be chall enged and removed. (November 2008) While there is no general agreement upon the greatest film, many publications an d organizations have tried to determine the films considered the best. Each film listed here has been mentioned in a notable survey, whether a popular poll, or a poll among film reviewers. Many of these sources focus on American films or we re polls of English-speaking film-goers, but those considered the greatest withi n their respective countries are also included here. Many films are widely consi dered among the best ever made, whether they appear at number one on each list o r not. For example, many believe that Orson Welles' Citizen Kane is the best mov ie ever made, and it appears as #1 on AFI's Best Movies list, whereas The Shawsh ank Redemption is #1 on the IMDB Top 250, whilst Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back is #1 on the Empire magazine's Top 301 List. None of the surveys that produced these citations should be viewed as a scientif ic measure of the film-watching world. Each may suffer the effects of vote stack ing or skewed demographics. Internet-based surveys have a self-selected audience of unknown participants. The methodology of some surveys may be questionable. S ometimes (as in the case of the American Film Institute) voters were asked to se lect films from a limited list of entries. -

Unique: Pits a human soul against seven demons in another dimension. When people reach the end of their own hubris, that's where they find God. Logline: Road House (Patrick Swayze, Sam Elliott) meets Touched by an Angel (Roma Downey, Della Reese, John Dye) For the first time on screen, a man, Wayne Tyler, actually faces seven demons in another dimension. The demons are deceitful, manipulative, sometimes humorous, sometimes fierce as in hell hath no fury like the scorn of a woman, and are always out to claim Wayne's soul; the demons' prize. Wayne's prize, to know what love is. This is an FX challenge, and FX dream drama. Reviewer Comments: "Wayne's Angel is portentous. With the imagination and vision of a modern day C.S. Lewis, or J.R.R. Tolkien, author Ron Mumford carefully weaves a story of both micro spiritual and macro cosmic redemption. -

Personal Branding of Jesus –Portrayed in the Movies 1897-2014: Applying Meaning Theory of Media Portrayal
Personal Branding of Jesus –Portrayed in the Movies 1897-2014: Applying Meaning Theory of Media Portrayal Carly Stiana Scheffer-Sumampouw, Universitas Pelita Harapan, Indonesia The Asian Conference on Arts & Humanities 2016 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract A phenomenal figure throughout the centuries, a hero for Christians and the savior for believers –JESUS- is the name that is the center of this research. More than twenty movies since 1987 until 2014 –in fact the newest of Ewan McGregor’s has been featured on Sundance film festival 2015- have been portraying the life, the death and the resurrection of Jesus. By definition, branding is all about creating differences. Derived from marketing and communication science, personal brand is about specific characteristics, unique quality, name and symbol that each person has and that conveys meaning to others. This paper explores the personal branding of Jesus –how He is different from other persons, if not other religious leaders. How He is unique depicted from these movies. What are His unique selling propositions which inspire mankind? And what are His brand promise? It argues whether the movies shown throughout different times and languages manage to portray true meaning (image and USP) based on the Bible. Movies as media portrayal can establish, extend, substitute and stabilize the meaning, but at the same time it can reduce the meaning of the name Jesus. Keywords: Jesus, movies, personal, branding, meaning, media, portrayal, bible iafor The International Academic Forum www.iafor.org Introduction Feature films nowadays have been one of the most favorite media ultimately for audience to receive entertainment if not information.
