Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be chall enged and removed. (November 2008) While there is no general agreement upon the greatest film, many publications an d organizations have tried to determine the films considered the best. Each film listed here has been mentioned in a notable survey, whether a popular poll, or a poll among film reviewers. Many of these sources focus on American films or we re polls of English-speaking film-goers, but those considered the greatest withi n their respective countries are also included here. Many films are widely consi dered among the best ever made, whether they appear at number one on each list o r not. For example, many believe that Orson Welles' Citizen Kane is the best mov ie ever made, and it appears as #1 on AFI's Best Movies list, whereas The Shawsh ank Redemption is #1 on the IMDB Top 250, whilst Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back is #1 on the Empire magazine's Top 301 List. None of the surveys that produced these citations should be viewed as a scientif ic measure of the film-watching world. Each may suffer the effects of vote stack ing or skewed demographics. Internet-based surveys have a self-selected audience of unknown participants. The methodology of some surveys may be questionable. S ometimes (as in the case of the American Film Institute) voters were asked to se lect films from a limited list of entries.

Personal Branding of Jesus –Portrayed in the Movies 1897-2014: Applying Meaning Theory of Media Portrayal Carly Stiana Scheffer-Sumampouw, Universitas Pelita Harapan, Indonesia The Asian Conference on Arts & Humanities 2016 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract A phenomenal figure throughout the centuries, a hero for Christians and the savior for believers –JESUS- is the name that is the center of this research. More than twenty movies since 1987 until 2014 –in fact the newest of Ewan McGregor’s has been featured on Sundance film festival 2015- have been portraying the life, the death and the resurrection of Jesus. By definition, branding is all about creating differences. Derived from marketing and communication science, personal brand is about specific characteristics, unique quality, name and symbol that each person has and that conveys meaning to others. This paper explores the personal branding of Jesus –how He is different from other persons, if not other religious leaders. How He is unique depicted from these movies. What are His unique selling propositions which inspire mankind? And what are His brand promise? It argues whether the movies shown throughout different times and languages manage to portray true meaning (image and USP) based on the Bible. Movies as media portrayal can establish, extend, substitute and stabilize the meaning, but at the same time it can reduce the meaning of the name Jesus. • Entmythologisierung Versus Imitatio Jesu Thematisierungen Des Evangeliums in Denys Arcands Film ,Jesus Von Montreal" Von Reinhold Zwick

THE GROTESQUE CROSS: THE PERFORMATIVE GROTESQUERIE OF THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS Hephzibah Darshni Dutt A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2015 Committee: Jonathan Chambers, Advisor Charles Kanwischer Graduate Faculty Representative Eileen Cherry Chandler Marcus Sherrell © 2015 Hephzibah Dutt All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jonathan Chambers, Advisor In this study I argue that the crucifixion of Jesus is a performative event and this event is an exemplar of the Grotesque. To this end, I first conduct a dramatistic analysis of the crucifixion of Jesus, working to explicate its performativity. Viewing this performative event through the lens of the Grotesque, I then discuss its various grotesqueries, to propose the concept of the Grotesque Cross. As such, the term “Grotesque Cross” functions as shorthand for the performative event of the crucifixion of Jesus, as it is characterized by various aspects of the Grotesque. I develop the concept of the Grotesque Cross thematically through focused studies of representations of the crucifixion: the film, Jesus of Montreal (Arcand, 1989), Philip Turner’s play, Christ in the Concrete City, and an autoethnographic examination of Cross-wearing as performance. I examine each representation through the lens of the Grotesque to define various facets of the Grotesque Cross. iv For Drs. Chetty and Rukhsana Dutt, beloved holy monsters & Hannah, Abhishek, and Esther, my fellow aliens v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS St. Cyril of Jerusalem, in instructing catechumens, wrote, “The dragon sits by the side of the road, watching those who pass.

  • Denys Arcand's Jesus of Montreal
ISSN 0258-2279 UTERATOR13 No. 3 Nov. 1992 JJ. Snym an & H.P.P. Lotto- The saving of appearances: Denys Arcand’s Jesus of Montreal A bstract The film Jesus o f Montreal consists o f an overlayering o f stories presenting in a postmodern way the story (SI) of a group o f actors’ attempt at an interpretation (S2) of an old story, the story o f Jesus’ life and death (S3). In line with a typical postmodern approach the borders between these parallel narratives are blurred, the various texts become intertexts, the contents o f the ‘original’ text are realized in the lives o f the actors apparently without their realizing it. In this contribution the dialectics o f Arcand’s postmodern procedure is followed up along two lines: firstly, the strategy of the overlayering o f three narratives is uncovered In a second phase, the dialectics of appearance and truth in the overlayering of narratives is discussed. 1. Introductoiy One can view Denys Arcand’s Jesus of Montreal as a postmodern version of Thomas á K em pis’ De Imitatione Christe (The Imitation of Christ). The film, as the director explained, is a representation of what would happen if Jesus should appear in modern day Montreal. The film, however, probes further than a mere adaptation of a story of two thousand years ago to late twentieth century Western culture; it poses the question of what the following of Christ would entail today. How would the message of Jesus affect postmodern humankind? How would the Gospel appear on a talk show? How would the story about a man called Jesus go about the town? Jesus o f Montreal constitutes of an overlayering of stories presenting the story (SI) of a group of actors’ attempt at an interpretation (82) of an old story, the story of Jesus’ life and death (S3).
