• Tyler Perry – the Trailblazer Award Waco Theater Center, 2019
TYLER PERRY – THE TRAILBLAZER AWARD WACO THEATER CENTER, 2019 On Saturday, June 1, 2019, actor, playwright and filmmaker Tyler Perry will receive The Trailblazer Award at WACO Theater Center’s Wearable Art Gala in Los Angeles. Perry’s inspirational journey from the hard streets of New Orleans to the heights of Hollywood's A-list is the stuff of American legend. Born into poverty and raised in a household scarred by abuse, Perry fought from a young age to find the strength, faith and perseverance that would later form the foundations of his much-acclaimed plays, films, books and shows. It was a simple piece of advice from Oprah Winfrey that set Perry's career in motion. Encouraged to keep a diary of his daily thoughts and experiences, he began writing a series of soul-searching letters to himself. The letters, full of pain and in time, forgiveness, became a healing catharsis. His writing inspired a musical, I Know I've Been Changed, and in 1992, Perry gathered his life's savings in hopes of staging it for sold out crowds. He spent all the money but the people never came, and Perry once again came face to face with the poverty that had plagued his youth. He spent months sleeping in seedy motels and his car but his faith - in God and, in turn, himself - only got stronger. He forged a powerful relationship with the church, and kept writing. In 1998 his perseverance paid off and a promoter booked I Know I've Been Changed for a limited run at a local church-turned-theatre.

6/4 A MADEA FAMILY FUNERAL COMEDY $75 MILL BO 3178 SCREENS PG-13 100 MINUTES DVD/COMBO DIGITAL COPY WITH THE COMBO Tyler Perry (NOBODY’S FOOL, VICE, GONE GIRL, MADEA GETS A JOB, GOOD DEEDS, MADEA’S FAMILY REUNION) We open on a houseful of characters we’ve never seen before and will only barely get to know, planning a 40th anniversary party for their parents Vianne (Jen Harper, “Greenleaf”) and Anthony (Derek Morgan, “Joan of Arcadia”). Traveling to the party are Madea, Joe, Bam and Hattie, driven by Joe’s upright-attorney son Brian (Perry again, sans latex). As the out-of-towners arrive at their hotel, they discover that Anthony has had a heart attack while having sex with family friend Renee (Quin Walters, “The Haves and the Have Nots”), which puts a crimp in the anniversary party plans but does allow them all to be around for the impending funeral. Whether or not Vianne will learn the circumstances of her husband’s death, and what the repercussions will be about Vianne’s older son sleeping with his younger brother’s fiancée, is about all the plot that the movie can muster. But the real draw is Madea, of course, and she gets to be unleashed onto both a family of two-timers and hypocrites and the black funeral itself, a ritual that the movie parodies as overdone and taxingly long. Perry is clearly having a blast in all that effects makeup: “A Madea Family Funeral” gives him a third older character to play, a leg-less lech named Heathrow who speaks through an electrolarynx; the (often improvised) scenes involving this trio give the film genuine comic spark and energy.

ABSTRACT HUMANITIES MEGGS, MICHELLE RENEE B.A. JOHNSON C. SMITH UNIVERSITY, 1993 M.DIV. WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY, 2003 “OH, SHE RATCHET”: AN EXAMINATION OF TYLER PERRY’S MADEA AND CHRISTIANEE PORTER’S MISS SHIRLEEN CHARACTERS AS AGENTS OF BLACK WOMEN’S LIBERATION Committee Chair: Stephanie Y. Evans, Ph.D. Dissertation dated July 2019 This purpose of this dissertation is to utilize womanism and ratchetness to determine how the actions of Tyler Perry’s Madea and Christianee Porter’s Miss Shirleen characters represent Black women’s agency through their ratchet actions. This dissertation analyzed two Tyler Perry films and five Miss Shirleen videos to determine whether their actions conveyed cultural and liberative significance beyond entertainment. This research discovered that both characters engaged in resistance to disempowering narratives through actions that embraced a radical subjectivity and subsequent dismissal of respectability politics that embraced the strengths of Black womanhood in affirming, creative, and audacious ways. This dissertation also found that ratchetness and i womanism as liberative agency leaves room for Black women to redefine themselves and evolve based on their own indigenous knowledge and create a language that is familiar and uplifting for themselves. Moreover, Black women can be ratchet, womanist, and respectable simultaneously regardless of class status thereby rejecting a pathologized Black womanhood. ii “OH, SHE RATCHET”: AN EXAMINATION OF TYLER PERRY’S MADEA AND CHRISTIANEE PORTER’S MISS SHIRLEEN CHARACTERS AS AGENTS OF BLACK WOMEN’S LIBERATION A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF ARTS BY MICHELLE RENEE MEGGS DEPARTMENT OF HUMANITIES ATLANTA, GEORGIA JULY 2019 © 2019 MICHELLE RENEE MEGGS All Rights Reserved ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This dissertation would not be possible without the faith and strength God provided me and sent to me through others when mine was not enough.
