Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia! On this day the Lord has acted; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24 Confession and Absolution Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence is kept. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Invitatory and Psalter One: Lord, open our lips. Many: And our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Glory to the Holy and Undivided Trinity, One God: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia. Alleluia. The Lord is risen indeed: Come let us adore him. Alleluia. Christ our Passover Pascha nostrum 1 Corinthians 5:7-8; Romans 6:9-11; 1 Corinthians 15:20-22 Alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us; * therefore let us keep the feast, Not with old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, * but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Alleluia. Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; * death no longer has dominion over him. The death that he died, he died to sin, once for all; * but the life he lives, he lives to God. So also consider yourselves dead to sin, * and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Alleluia. Christ has been raised from the dead, * the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by a man came death, * by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, * so in Christ shall all be made alive. Alleluia. Alleluia. The Lord is risen indeed: Come let us adore him. Alleluia. Psalm 27 1. God is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear? * God is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid? 2. When evildoers came upon me to eat up my flesh, * it was they, my foes and my adversaries, who stumbled and fell. 3. Though an army should encamp against me, * yet my heart shall not be afraid; 4. And though war should rise up against me, * yet will I put my trust in God. 5. One thing have I asked of you, O God; one thing I seek: * that I may dwell in your house all the days of my life, 6. To behold your fair beauty, O God, * and to seek you in your temple. 7. For in the day of trouble you shall keep me safe in your shelter; * you shall hide me in the secrecy of your dwelling and set me high upon a rock. 8. Even now you lift up my head * above my enemies round about me. 9. Therefore I will offer in your dwelling an oblation with sounds of great gladness; * I will sing and make music to you. 10. Hearken to my voice, O Most High, when I call; * have mercy on me and answer me. 11. You speak in my heart and say, “Seek my You speak in my heart and say, “Seek my face.” * Your face, O God, will I seek. 12. Hide not your face from me, * nor turn away your servant in displeasure. 13. You have been my helper; cast me not away; * do not forsake me, O God of my salvation. 14. Though my father and my mother forsake me, * you will sustain me. 15. Show me your way, O God, * lead me on a level path, because of my enemies. 16. Deliver me not into the hand of my adversaries, * for false witnesses have risen up against me, and also those who speak malice. 17. What if I had not believed that I should see the goodness of my God * in the land of the living! 18. O tarry and await God’s pleasure; be strong, and let your heart take comfort; * wait patiently for God. Glory to the Holy and Undivided Trinity, One God: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia. Readings for Mothering Sunday Today we thank God for the gift of mothers and mothering across the world. Isaiah wrote that God is a mother to us, comforting and carrying us in her arms. As one whom a mother comforts, so I will comfort you – Isaiah 66:13. Gentle, patient God – thank you for your tender care. Isaiah also wrote that God will never forget us and knows each one of us just as a mother knows her own children. Can a woman forget her baby at her breast, feel no pity for the child she has borne? Even if these were to forget, I shall not forget you. Isaiah 49:15 Gentle, patient God – thank you for your tender care. David wrote that in God’s presence, he was quiet and at peace, trusting in God like a child safe in its mother’s arms. No I hold myself in quiet and silence, like a child in its mothers’ arms. Psalm 131:2 Gentle, patient God – thank you for your tender care. Jesus spoke of himself as a mother, longing to wrap his arms around us like a mother-hen gathering her chicks under her wings. How often have I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings… Matthew 23:37 Gentle, patient God – thank you for your tender care. Canticle R: A Song of True Motherhood ~Julian of Norwich from Enriching our Worship God chose to be our mother in all things* and so made the foundation of his work, most humbly and most pure, in the Virgin’s womb. God, the perfect wisdom of all,* arrayed himself in this humble place. Christ came in our poor flesh* to share a mother’s care. Our mothers bear us for pain and for death;* our true mother, Jesus, bears us for joy and endless life. Christ carried us within him in love and travail,* until the full time of his passion. And when all was completed and he had carried us so for joy,* still all this could not satisfy the power of his wonderful love. All that we owe is redeemed in truly loving God, for the love of Christ works in us; Christ is the one whom we love. Glory to the Holy and Undivided Trinity, One God: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. The Gospel Lesson: John 4:23–26 Jesus said to the Samaritan woman, "The hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ). "When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us." Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is speaking to you." Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. Thanks be to God. Reflection on Julian of Norwich The Apostle's Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Prayers The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Suffrages V. Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance; R. Govern and uphold them, now and always. V.
