When Daan Frenkel became head of department in October, it was with the help of two deputy heads of department – Jane Clarke and David Wales. Sarah Houlton talks to them about their roles, and what they involve Why does the new department struc - ture have this ‘triumvirate’ headship? David: Quite simply, because there is so much work involved – I don’t know how Bill Jones could possibly have done this on his own! I’ve worked here for more than 20 years and I really had no idea what lay underneath the tip of the iceberg in terms of the amount of organisation and administration the department needs. The only way to do this and keep people sane is with a hierarchical structure, with layers of committees and delegated authority, which is what we now have. I think it’s working quite well – we’ve had a reorganisation in terms of administrative staff, which has saved money while being more efficient. So Daan is the out - ward face of the department, I look after sup - port and resources, and Jane is responsible for staffing issues. t t i P n It does sound like rather a large task a h t for one person! So, Jane, what are a N your responsibilities? : o t o Jane: I’m responsible for all sorts of personnel h issues in the department. Research Institute Application Gold Award ATHENA SWAN GOLD RESEARCH INSTITUTE AWARDS Gold research institutes should be beacons of achievement in gender equality, and should champion and promote good practice in the wider community. A gold research institute award recognises a significant and sustained record of activity and achievement by the institute, in promoting gender equality, and addressing challenges across the institute. The institute will need to demonstrate their commitment to all the charter principles. Applications should demonstrate that Athena SWAN is completely embedded within the institute, with strong leadership in promoting and championing the Charter principles, including consideration of gender equality for professional and support staff and trans people. This should be complemented by data demonstrating the impact of Athena SWAN activities. The institute should also demonstrate that they have taken an intersectional approach to analysing data and devising possible solutions to identified challenges. The information provided indicates (as shown in the charts below) a good spread of experience both in terms of length of service on the college and in terms of the numbers of reviews undertaken to date. -

This document lists the membership of the main and sub-panels for the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008). The panels will assess the quality of research in submissions to RAE2008. Key points 2. For the purpose of RAE2008, each academic discipline is assigned to one of 67 units of assessment (UOAs). There is a two-tier panel system: 67 sub-panels of experts, one for each UOA, work under the guidance of 15 main panels. Under each main panel are broadly cognate disciplines whose subjects have similar approaches to research. 3. Panel members are experts drawn from higher education institutions (HEIs) and the wider research community, and are nominated by subject associations and other stakeholder organisations. Each main panel and sub-panel has stipulated criteria and working methods that they will adhere to in making assessments: these were published in January 2006 as RAE 01/2006: RAE2008: Panel criteria and working methods. 4. This list of panel membership is correct at the time of going to print.
