RESUMO «Tragédia mais Gloriosa que Dolorosa» O Discurso Missionário sobre a Perseguição aos Cristãos no Regime Tokugawa na Imprensa Europeia (1598 – 1652) Ana Fernandes Pinto Palavras-Chave: Japão – Regime Tokugawa – Martírio – Europa Católica – Reforma Católica – Companhia de Jesus – Franciscanos – Dominicanos – Agostinhos Resumo Em 1549 os missionários da Companhia de Jesus estabeleciam a missão do Japão, inaugurando um período de evangelização católica que se prolongou até à década de 1640. O sucesso da conversão dos nipónicos levou a que, a partir da década de 1590, as ordens mendicantes fossem no encalço dos jesuítas. O período coincidiu com o momento em que o regime Tokugawa impôs no Japão um processo de centralização política de cariz autoritário. A doutrina católica e as atitudes dos missionários colidiram com a nova ordem estabelecida pelos Tokugawa que, por isso, promoveram uma política sistemática anticristã. O sucesso da evangelização deu lugar a uma missão martirizada que serviu para alimentar uma vasta produção tipográfica na Europa Católica de Seiscentos, tanto mais que ia ao encontro das tendências devocionais da Europa da Contra-Reforma e da espiritualidade do Barroco. Por esta via, a Europa tomou contacto com a longínqua Ásia. Mas os textos missionários impressos não tinham apenas fins informativos. A dinâmica tipográfica gerada servia também para fazer a apologia de cada uma das ordens missionárias e assim influenciar os poderes políticos e religiosos a fim defenderem os seus direitos de evangelização. O martírio no Japão foi assim utilizado como arma de propaganda pelas ordens missionárias na Europa. ABSTRACT «Tragédia mais Gloriosa que Dolorosa» The Missionary discourse about Tokugawa persecution towards Christians in European Printing Press (1598 – 1652) Ana Fernandes Pinto Keywords: Tokugawa Japan – Martyrdom – Early Modern Europe – Catholic Renewal – Jesuits – Dominicans – Augustinians Abstract In 1549 the missionaries of the Society of Jesus established themselves in Japan ushering in a period of Catholic evangelization which lasted until the 1640s. Since the Japanese mission came to be very successful, Mendicants Orders went after Jesuits evangelization from 1590’s onwards. By that time Tokugawa rulers were committed to structuring a centralized and authoritarian government. Missionaries’ preaching and attitudes clashed with the new order established by Tokugawa, who ended up promoting an anti-Christian policy. The success of the evangelization gave rise to a martyred mission which fueled a large missionary printing press activity in Catholic Europe. This discourse on martyrdom in Japan fed into the then occurring Catholic renewal devotional trends and Baroque spirituality. This was the setting in which 17th century Catholic Europe learned about Japan. Those printed texts were not simply used for information purposes. Printing press activity, separately promoted by each missionary order, envisaged also their own exaltation in a competition to influence the European political and religious powers in the ongoing controversy on missionary rights in Japan. Martyrdom in Japan thus became as a weapon of propaganda for missionary orders in Europe.     INTRODUCTION: SHIN BUDDHISM AND JAPANESE SOCIETY Ugo Dessì Until recently most of the relatively few studies on Jōdo Shinshū 浄土 真宗 (True Pure Land denomination), or Shin Buddhism, published in the English language have reflected a sectarian approach, namely, the interest of Shin Buddhist believers in their own tradition and their concern about promoting their religion within a wider audience of read- ers, or have attempted to develop forms of interreligious dialogue with Christianity and philosophical discourses. While these approaches are respectable in their respective fields, it is noticeable that there has been a relative disinterest in this topic by modern religious studies. One of the reasons for this, as has been suggested by Galen Amstutz and others, is probably the fact that Shin Buddhism substantially lacks many of those ‘exotic’ features, such as focus on meditation and mystical experiences, that have attracted the interest of generations of orientalists.1 Despite the marginalization to which Shin Buddhism has been sub- jected in ‘western’ (but not in Japanese) religious studies, this religious tradition has had a significant presence in Japanese history and cul- ture at least from the fifteenth century onward. It was in this period that the proselytizing work of Rennyo 蓮如 (1415–1499) successfully attracted most of the communities of nenbutsu practitioners which had developed from the earlier preaching of the ‘founder’ Shinran 親鸞 (1173–1262), and masses of new converts as well, to form one of the most powerful religious communities

    The Dilemma of Religious Power Honganji and Hosokawa Masamoto Michael Solomon Jōdo Shinshū,*,1 Japan’s largest Buddhist sect, has two main branches and two head temples: Nishi (West) Honganji and Higashi (East) Honganji.2 Located a short distance apart and in close proximity to Kyoto Station, they are not only the first historical landmarks to confront the visitor arriving by train but are among the most imposing of the many temples in the old capital city. The vast compounds of the two Honganjis are generally thronged with people. Among them, the adherents of the sect, or monto, greatly outnum- ber ordinary sightseers.3 The grandiose buildings and crowds of pilgrims re- call the time about four hundred years ago when there was but one Honganji, whose monto followers were organized into a dedicated fighting force, and whose combined religious and temporal power was on a scale unique in Japanese history. Indeed, the division of Honganji into the present two branches was itself the price the sect had to pay for its political and military involvement. After ten years of battle, Honganji’s military power was finally broken by Oda Nobunaga’s army of national reunification in 1580. From Kamakura times (1185-1333) the regional warlords controlled trade and the turmoil of civil war encouraged piracy in domestic and international waters. Political stability with the unification of Japan in the Edo era (1603 – 1867) resulted in clear documentation on port activities with the importance of rice as a taxation commodity and the elevated national importance of Ōsaka port as a commercial hub. The questions we pose about Ōsaka ports from ancient times to the beginning of the Meiji Restoration are: what institutions and organisations were the dominant players in port administration at any point of time? Whose interests did the port serve? And how have these institutions and organisations changed over time, especially the change agents that triggered reform? To help answer these broad questions we draw on selected aspects of the “new institutional economics” (NIE) that have been recently applied to port administration and port labour markets. The historical period covered in our analysis is from the Japanese ancient period to the Meiji restoration (1868) with its reform of government institutions along Western models.

    NENJU NEWS JODO SHINSHU BUDDHIST TEMPLES OF CANADA Volume 2, Issue 3 October, 2020 When the last Nenju News went out in May, after the AGM, we were in the midst of the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic and struggling to see how we would go forward with the Temples closed and everyone worried about health and finances. Now we are JSBTC VISION AND in the predicted second wave of the pandemic and once again facing possible re- strictions. We are in chaotic and uncertain times, with no end in sight. MISSION And yet the pandemic has led to some very positive developments.     Map of the Taisho and Zen Portion of the Zokuzokyo The Taisho Canon or Tripitaka is a large collection of writings in Chinese and Japanese. The full title is 大正新脩大藏經. 大正 is taisho, 新脩 is shinshu, and 大藏經 is daizokyo. Taisho refers to the fact that the first parts of this collection were published during the Taisho era in Japan, 1924. Shinshu means newly published. Daizokyo means a great store of sutras and is used to translate the Sanskrit word tripitaka. The Taisho contains 3,360 texts in 100 volumes. The editors, J. Takakusu and K. Watanabe, collected texts from libraries in China and Japan. The Taisho is considered one of the most complete collections of Buddhist texts in Chinese and Japanese. The Chinese Buddhist Electronic Text Association (www.CBETA.org) has produced an electronic edition of the Taisho and the Zen portion of the Zokuzokyo (with plans to finish the Zokuzokyo in 2007). The texts can be downloaded for free from the website. They have also made a browser for the text collection with powerful and fast search capabilities and a few other nice features (copy and cite, bookmarking, etc.). The entire text collection and the browser can be downloaded (as an ISO file – 593 MB), or a CD can be mailed to you (contact: [email protected], by donation – none required).
