Constitution of Purdue Animation, Comic, and Game CONSTITUTION OF PURDUE ANIMATION, COMIC, AND GAME ASSOCIATION ARTICLE I Name and Governance The name of this organization shall be the Purdue Animation, Comic, and Game Association (PACGA). ARTICLE II Mission Statement The purpose of PACGA is to provide Asian-subculture-based services and events (primarily Japanese anime, comic and game relevant) to Purdue students, so as to promote multicultural understanding and exchange, as well as providing a social platform for the enlarging group of people sharing the same interests to communicate in Purdue University. For this purpose, PACGA shall develop a comfortable and interest-professional environment for Purdue students to immerse in, to communicate, to enhance friendship and to enrich their student life. PACGA is to distinguish from Purdue Anime Club (PAC) by different preference and concentration on Japanese sub-culture. PACGA encourages students to participate interest-based activities involving personal skills, by which students enhance personal abilities through meaningful activities as well. Activities, apart from the usual events, may be, but not limited to, Wota Dance, collective Cosplay (costume play) show to enhance friendship and cultural understanding, Anime band and instruments learning for those who love ACG music, and study of Manga drawing, game design and programming technique. ARTICLE III Definition of Membership A. Eligibility of Advisor a. Non-student member of the organization, with all rights and privileges therein, except for the right to vote or hold office. b. Advisor is covered under the University’s general liability policy when advisor is participating in student organization events. B. Eligibility of Volunteer a. Member of the organization, with the purpose of helping the organization with the events and advertising. b. Be requested to be listed in the PACGA E-mail list. c. Membership and participation are free from discrimination based on race, religion, color, sex, age, national origin or ancestry, marital status, parental status, sexual orientation, disability, or status as a disabled or Vietnam-era veteran. C. Eligibility of Member a. Member of the organization, holding the membership cards. b. Be recommended to be listed in the PACGA E-mail list. c. Membership and participation are free from discrimination based on race, religion, color, sex, age, national origin or ancestry, marital status, parental status, sexual orientation, disability, or status as a disabled or Vietnam-era veteran. ARTICLE IV Duties of Officers A. Coordinators a. Leaders of department, be elected by all officers. b. Be requested to attend the weekly meeting. c. Be responsible for the officers of the department. B. Treasurer a. Collect and Deposit all funds. b. Retrieve all petty cash and the cash box for all fundraisers and collaborating events. c. Keep a detailed record of all receipts. C. General Officers a. Be interviewed by the coordinator of the department and the president. b. Be requested to attend the weekly meeting. ARTICLE V Amendments This constitution may be amended by the president with an affirmative vote of a majority of the officers voting at any regular meeting of PACGA. All amendments to the constitution are subject to approval by the Office of the Dean of Students. .

This is done by analysing four different series from 2010s, in which incest is a major theme. The analysis is done using visual analysis. The study concludes that although the series can show sexualization of drawn underage girls, reading the works as if they would posit either real or fictional little sisters as sexual targets. Instead, the analysis suggests that following the narrative, the works should be read as fictional underage girls expressing a pure feelings and sexuality, unspoiled by adult corruption. To understand moe, it is necessary to understand the history of Japanese animation. Much of the genres, themes and styles in manga and anime are due to Tezuka Osamu, the “god of manga” and “god of animation”. From the 1950s, Tezuka was influenced by Disney and other western animators at the time.

    ISSN: 2519-1268 Issue 9 (Summer 2019), pp. 59-87 DOI: 10.6667/interface.9.2019.86 Russia/Russians on Ice: Imagined Identity and Cross-cultural Communication in Yuri!!! on ICE tien-yi chao National Taiwan University Abstract Yuri!!! on ICE (2016; 2017) is a Japanese TV anime featuring multinational figure skaters com- peting in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series. The three protagonists, including two Russian skaters Victor Nikiforov, and Yuri Purisetsuki (Юрий Плисецкий), and one Japanese skater Yuri Katsuki (勝生勇利), engage in extensive cross-cultural discourses. This paper aims to explore the ways in which Russian cultures, life style, and people are ‘glocalised’ in the anime, not only for the Japanese audience but also for fans around the world. It is followed by a brief study of Russian fans’ response to YOI’s display of Russian memes and Taiwanese YOI fan books relating to Russia and Russians in YOI. My reading of the above materials suggests that the imagined Russian identity in both the official anime production and the fan works can be regarded as an intriguing case of cross-cultural communication and cultural hybridisation.     The dissemination and localization of anime in China: Case study on the Chinese mobile video game Onmyoji Wuqian Qian The Department of Asian, Middle Eastern and Turkish Studies Master Program in Asian Studies, 120 hp Autumn term 2016 Supervisor: Jaqueline Berndt English title: Professor Abstract In the 2017 Chinese Gaming Industry Report, a new type of video games called 二次 元 game is noted as a growing force in the game industry. Onmyoji is one of those games produced by Netease and highly popular with over 200 million registered players in China alone. 二次元 games are characterized by Japanese-language dubbing and anime style in character design. However, Onmyoji uses also Japanese folklore, which raises two questions: one is why Netease chose to make such a 二次元 game, the other why a Chinese game using Japanese folklore is so popular among Chinese players. The attractiveness of an exotic culture may help to explain the latter, but it does not work for the first. Thus, this thesis implements a media studies perspective in order to substantiate its hypothesis that it is the dissemination of anime in China that has made Onmyoji possible and successful. Unlike critics who regard anime as an imported product from Japan which is different from domestic Chinese animation and impairs its development, this study pays attention to the interrelation between media platforms and viewer (or user) demographics, and it explores the positive influence of Japanese anime on the Chinese creative industry, implying the feasibility of anime or 二次元 products to be created in other countries than Japan.

Most of their audiences are female. Using textual analysis, this paper aims to identify the reasons that these female media consumers and female fan creators are attracted to Slash and Yaoi. The first author, as a prior Slash fan creator, also provides part of experiences to describe the themes found in existing fan studies. Five themes, both to confirm and to describe this phenomenon are (1) pleasure of same-sex relationship exposure, (2) homosexual marketing, (3) the erotic fantasy, (4) gender discrimination in primacy text, and (5) the need of equality in romantic relationship. This could be concluded that these female fans temporarily identify with a male character to have erotic interaction with another male one in Slash narrative. A reason that female fans need to imagine themselves as a male character, not a female one, is that lack of mainstream media consists of female characters with a leading role, besides the romance genre. However, the need of gender equality, as the reason of female fans who consume Slash text, might be the belief of fan scholars that could be applied in only some contexts. While YouTuber used to refer to human presence, the virtual YouTuber trend starting in 2016 extends this way of becoming famous to the realm of virtual characters and avatars. Similarly, top virtual YouTubers follow their famous human counterparts to have transmedia presence and solid fan bases. As a new combination of human and machine, virtual YouTubers are bringing novel experiences to audiences and pushing the boundary between the real and the imagined. This thesis aims to study virtual YouTuber Kizuna AI as a specific and emerging type of internet celebrity containing disputing definitions, meanings and values to her producing company, voice models and audiences on Chinese video platform bilibili.com. By conducting semiological analysis and qualitative text analysis, the thesis displays the producers’ efforts in constructing Kizuna AI as an adorable and exotic self-claimed AI YouTuber with distinctive visual features from Japanese culture and connotations of both human and non-human qualities. It unveils the dynamics within Kizuna AI’s audience group where they have non-unified definitions over Kizuna AI, and engage Affectively, cognitively, morally with Kizuna AI with different intensities and proximities, and further demonstrates Kizuna AI’s whole form as a digital commodity involving interrelated issues of economic logics, labour relations, capital and socio-cultural values.

Mark McLelland, University of Wollongong Abstract This paper investigates the implications of Australia’s prohibition of ‘child-abuse material’ (including cartoons, animation, drawings, and text) for Australian fan communities of animation, comics and gaming (ACG) and slash fiction. It is argued that current legislation is out of synch with the new communicative environment brought about by the Internet since a large portion of the fans producing and trading in these images are themselves minors and young people. Habermas’s analysis of the conflict between instrumental and communicative rationality is deployed to demonstrate that legislators have misrecognised the nature of the communicative practices that take place within the ‘lifeworlds’ of fan communities resulting in an unjust ‘juridification’ of their creative works.
