Moors Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development [email protected] +31 30 253 7812 Second Reader: Dr. Koen Beumer Summary A sustainability transition in the agri-food regime is urgently required to interrupt the strong reciprocal effect between current food production standards and climate change (Willett et al., 2019). One sustainable innovation in the agri-food sector is aquaponics. Aquaponics is the combination of hydroponics and recirculating aquaculture in one controlled environment (Somerville, Cohen, Pantanella, Stankus & Lovatelli, 2014). At first sight, the water and nutrient-saving character of aquaponics, amongst other features (Somerville et al., 2014), sound promising for a transition towards sustainable agriculture. Therefore, the following research question emerged: How can the emerging aquaponics technology contribute to the sustainability transition in the Dutch agri- food sector based on Dutch aquaponics developments in the period 2008-2018? To answer this overarching research question, three sub-questions were developed. An integrated framework combining the multilevel perspective (MLP) and the technological innovation system (TIS) was used to understand the dynamics between overall structural trends, the current Dutch agri-food sector and the emerging aquaponics innovation. The innovation was also set into a broader European context. The research was of exploratory nature and used a qualitative content analysis to process 23 interviews, scientific articles, practitioner websites, publication, patent and Google Trend statistics, etc. -

We continue to build and foster real connections with each other, people in our communities, and our partners around the world. And we live lives of service that reflect God’s greater purpose in our world. In this current reality, some days it is difficult to focus on this greater purpose. I hope you are inspired by the stories in this magazine that demonstrate how the people of our community are serving this greater purpose even in the face of the challenges that surround us. However, the productivity of the labour force engage in agriculture has continuously decline. The conventional farming method has become unfeasible due to ever raising input prices. This has led to increase in rural indebtedness and serious agrarian crisis in India. The Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF) can help to eliminating rural indebtedness and degradation of natural resources in India. This paper presents some empirical evidence on ZBNF and its related myth and reality. Wolff University of Minnesota Conservation Biology Program,100 Ecology Building 1987 Upper Buford Circle, St. Paul, MN 55108 Email: [email protected] Abstract: Environmental ethicists have focused much attention on the limits of utilitarianism and have generally defined “environmental ethics” in a manner that treats utilitarian environmental ethics as an oxymoron. This is unfortunate because utilitarian ethics can support strong environmental policies, and environmental ethicists have not yet produced a contemporary environmental ethic with such broad appeal. I believe educators should define environmental ethics more broadly and teach utilitarian ethics in a non-pejorative fashion so that graduates of environmental studies and policy programs understand the merits of utilitarian arguments and can comfortably participate in the policymaking arena, where utilitarian ethics continue to play a dominant role. Exponential population growth, along with growing technological capabilities, has allowed human societies to alter their terrain in unprecedented and destructive ways. The cumulative effect has been significant to the point that the blame for widespread environmental degradation must be pinned squarely on human shoulders. Because of our dependence on these systems for survival, the threat to the environment is a threat to human life. The root of the ecological crisis is found in human attitudes and behaviors. It is described as “the natural way of farming” or “do nothing farming”. “Organic Farming is a holistic system designed to optimize the productivity and fitness of diverse communities within the agro-ecosystem, including oil, organisms, plants, livestock and people. The principal goal of organic production is to development enterprises that are sustainable and harmonious with the environment”. The most significant difference between Natural and organic farming is that Natural farming based on natural resource or on farm products to fights the weeds, pests and disease, whereas organic farming permits no chemical intervention. Integration of animals into eco-functionally intensified agricultural systems to enhance agricultural, ecological and social systems, can contribute to driving a future sustainable development of organic agricultural and food systems. This approach may respond to challenges of an increasing industrialization of livestock in the global north, a process which has led to heavy reliance on external inputs, and, to a large extent, a detachment of animals from farming systems, especially in the global south. Animals are living sentient beings, but often not acknowledged as such. Complex, well-integrated systems can be organized so that they support the health and welfare of animals, and let these animals be valuable resources within the farming system. -

The sustainable agriculture development of every country depends upon the judicious mix of their available natural resources. The big objective for the improvement of agriculture sector can be realize through rapid growth of agriculture which depends upon increasing the area of cultivation, cropping intensity and productivity.
