Dr. Donald V. Dowless became Shorter University’s 19th president effective June 1, 2011. “Dr. Donald Dowless has strong credentials in the areas of Christian commitment, higher education administration, fundraising, and ministry,” said Shorter University Trustee Chairman Dr. Nelson Price in announcing his appointment. “The integration of faith and learning is the foundation of his accomplishments as he has risen through the academic ranks,” Dr. Price added. “He knows academia inside and out, and what is most impressive about Dr. Dowless is his love for the Lord and his desire to honor Him with all his heart, soul, and mind. His passion for seeing students grow strong in the Christian faith and for knowing their academic disciplines is evident. “We are grateful for the progress Shorter University made under Dr. Newman’s leadership, and we are sure to keep the momentum of success under our new leader, Dr. Donald Dowless.” Dr. Dowless came to Shorter from North , where he served for five years as vice president for academics. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS, BILL PETERSON

Bill Peterson enters his fifth year as Shorter University’s Director of Athletics. Since being named Director of Athletics in 2007, Peterson has guided Shorter’s athletic department into unprecedented levels of success. His decision-making and expertise have propelled Shorter to record finishes in the NACDA-Learfield Director’s Cup in each of the last four years, including a program-best third place finish following the 2010-2011 academic year. Peterson was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Athletic Director of the Year in 2010 and is currently spearheading Shorter’s exciting transition to NCAA Division II. Since 2007-2008, Shorter has won five national championships and 19 conference championships. Last year, Shorter won the NAIA Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field national championships -- the first two NAIA national championships in school history -- while the competitive cheerleading program completed a three-peat at the NCA Cheerleading National Championships in April. In Peterson’s tenure, Shorter has had 263 All-Conference honorees and 128 student-athletes honored as All-Americans. While the athletic achievements are numerous, the academic accomplishments and track record of community involvement of Shorter’s student-athletes clearly embodies his vision of excellence. Shorter’s number of NAIA Scholar-Athletes has grown from five in 2007-2008 to a record 28 in 2010-2011. Overall, 71 Shorter student-athletes have earned the title of NAIA Scholar-Athlete over the past four years while a total of 345 have been named to their respective Conference All-Academic teams. 2011 OUTLOOK

By Jim O’Hara and Matt Green

When the Shorter University volleyball program raises the curtain for a new season on Aug. 26 at the Milligan College Mountain Madness, an almost entirely new cast of players will take the court. Head coach Jon Moseley is anxiously looking forward to enjoying the show. “Last year was a great year and I’ll always remember it as a fun year,” Moseley said about last fall’s 26-6 run that saw SU open with a recording-setting 13 straight wins, win 20 of its first 22 outings and come one set away from the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament final. “We fell just short of where we wanted to go, but it was still a great year. If we can improve on last year, then we’ll be doing pretty well. “We’re going to be young and inexperienced at some spots,” he added. “But talent-wise, we have a strong group and we’re getting better.” Although they are missing five now-graduated seniors from the 2010 unit – all were members of Moseley’s first recruiting class – there is a notable blend of returning experience and youthful exuberance that gives the Lady Hawks the right ingredients to remain at the top. Four starters from last year return this year, giving Shorter a strong and seasoned nucleus. Two of those veterans include seniors Meghan Weller, a defensive specialist from Kennesaw, and Jessica Cooper, a middle from Grant, Ala. “Meghan’s probably one of the smartest players I’ve coached,” Moseley said of Weller, who recorded a career high 191 digs for the Lady Hawks in 2010. “And she’s mentally tough – a solid player you can depend on.” Cooper, who transferred to Shorter from Snead State last year, emerged as the Lady Hawks’ top obstacle at the net in 2010 when she led the team the 109 blocks. Making that statistic even Junior Jordan Corder is the key to Shorter’s ignition and despite her more remarkable is the fact that she has been playing competitive prowess as a setter, could see time at defensive specialist in 2011. volleyball for just three years. “I’ve never see a player get this good that fast,” Moseley said of Olive is equally a key for the team after leading the Lady Hawks last Cooper. “She’s athletic, has the work ethic and is passionate about year with 61 aces and ranking right behind Corder with 274 digs. competing – she’s a unifier. 2010 REVIEW

By Jim O’Hara and Matt Green

When a season ends, so too does the daily routine athletes and coaches have maintained for months. There are no more reviews of previous games, no more game planning for the next outing, nor any team meetings or practice. Those things crossed Shorter University head volleyball coach Jon Moseley’s mind when he arrived at the Winthrop-King Center days after his Lady Hawks saw their 2010 season end. “It was hard to come in and realize that we did not have a practice,” Moseley said as he looked back on a year that had plenty of high moments, but came to a sudden end in a heartbreaking loss in the semifinals of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament. “But I do know it was an enjoyable year,” Moseley added. “This team was easy to coach. They wanted to give their best effort every day and did just that. Regardless of how it ended, they can look back and see what a great season it was.” Without a doubt, 2010 will be remembered as one that, in addition to building on to Shorter’s growing reputation as an NAIA power, produced some record-setting moments in what wound up being a rock-solid 26-6 campaign. The Lady Hawks reeled off 20 wins in their first 22 matches, the lone two losses coming to SSAC rival and eventual tournament champion Lee, which entered the 2010 NAIA Volleyball National Championship unbeaten and as the nation’s No. 1-ranked team. During that fast start, Shorter put together a record 13 straight victories and seemingly saw a different player step up each night, underlining a deep and talented roster that combined experience with youth. Senior Katie Van Hofwegen picked up her second All-SSAC honor in Two Lady Hawks came away with two of the top postseason addition to being named the league’s top libero.
